Coalition Government Formed

Ashington- The leaders of the three largest parties of Alrodey announced today that a coalition government has been formed, following recent Sämling elections. This election resulted in a devided political landscape, with the National Party winning a plurality with 14 seats. The party leaders today declared that a so-called 'grand coalition' will be formed, consisting of the National Party, the Democratic Union of Alrodey and the Worker's Party of Alrodey. Lord Regent Lewis (not officially aligned to a party but rumoured to support the Democratic Union) has the support of all three coalition parties. National Party leader Victor Falkner will serve as the First Radherr, while Democratic Union leader Oluf Mikkelsen will serve as Radherr of Finance. Magnus Jones, leader of the Worker's Party, was appointed Radherr for Natopian Relations.

Several opposition parties condemned the coalition. Communist Party & Labour Party of Fletchay chairman, Lex Murr, called the participation of the Worker's Party "a clear betrayal of the proletariate" and declared that "a worker's revolution is at hand." On the other side of the political spectrum, the Partij voor Seelandt declared that "cooperation with socialists is like deliberately tying yourself to a boulder whilst running off a steep cliff." and warned that Jones would "most certainly be egged" if he would ever visit Seelandt.

In addition to the party leaders, four other politicians have been appointed Radherr: Bjorn Asquith (National Party) on Education, Culture and Sports; Ferdinand Olesen (National Party) on Social Affairs; Erika Stolck (Democratic Union) on Trade and Industry and Lisette Hampton (Worker's Party) on Security and Defense.

Terrorist Attacks in Fletchay Shock Alrodey

Post by Verion »

Fletchay - Nationalist Terrorists attacked the Fletchay subway this morning, killing more than 20 and wounding numerous others. Four males, identified as being part of the fringe group FF (For the Fatherland) opened fire with semi-automatic rifles during rush hour on the blue line, the busiest subway line in Fletchay which is used by thousands of commuters every day. Following their attrocious acts, three of the four gunmen committed suicide. The last shooter was captured by bystanders and is taken into police custody. At the moment, the security services and the Alrodean police are investigating further terrorist threads. At least two houses in downtown Fletchay have been searched.

The Lord Regent and other high-ranking officials have strongly condemned the terrorist acts and warned that justice will be swift and severe.

Potential Volcanic Disaster, Scientists Claim

Post by Verion »

Fletchay - The Geographic Society of Alrodey today published a report announcing a "real and present" danger of a volcanic outburst in Alrodey. The massive Honsting Crater, which stretches out over several Alrodean provinces, has long been thought to be a dead vulcano. However, the GSA scientists claim that the volcano was sleaping rather than dead, and that recent oil drillings in the area might be able to "wake up" the volcano. The GSA estimates the likelihood of a volcanic eruption at between 8 and 10 percent. In case of an actual volcanic eruption, the entire island of Alrodey would be at risk. The massive size of the Honsting crater would ensure the end of the nation. Lord Regent Lewis dismissed the report, calling it "nonsensical scaremongering", Lewis is a known proponent of oil drillings in Honsting.

Ashington - hung Sämling, poll suggests!

A poll conducted by the Telegraph predicts a hung Sämling, with the Worker's Party projected to win most seats at 21, 2 seats more than the party's highest in 1630. The National Party, the leading member of the National-Verionist coalition government, is expected to increase its seats share by 1, however the right-wing party appears isolated in Sämling following the collapse of the Verionists. The Liberal and Democratic Party, campaigning together with an agreement with the Democratic Alliance (recently renamed to Union Democratic Movement, but not yet reflected in Alrodey) are projected to stay at 5.

The Worker's Party has said it aims to win a majority in the Sämling, so it can carry through its employment rights programme, however if our poll is correct they might have trouble passing bills through the Sämling on their own. With a single Communist seat, the left will need at least one more Member of the Sämling (MS) to achieve the 23 seats needed for a majority. This could come either from the FJBP, or the Liberals-DA alliance, although the latter are unlikely to participate in a government with radical left-wing agenda as the Worker's Party, and Communists, would wish. With a few very marginal seats, each of which can turn the balance of power to either the centre-right or centre-left, this election is going to be on a knife edge!

The Telegraph: UDM loses support after name change

Post by Gwyn Moonoak »

Gwyn Moonoak wrote:Ashington - UDM loses support after name change, the most recent opinion polls suggest. Worker's Party heading for victory!

Most recent polling data projects 23 seats for the Worker's Party, which gives them a majority of 1 - just enough so they govern on their own. Most gains come from UDM-Worker's battlegrounds, which are leaning towards the latter since the UDM (formerly Democratic Alliance) and Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance has lost almost half of its projected seats.
If the polls are correct, the UDM and Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance is set to win 3 seats in the Sämling, making it the third largest bloc in the chamber. Ahead of them is the National Party, currently standing at 16 seats - far behind its main opponent the Worker's Party.

Assuming the polls are anywhere near accurate, the left-leaning parties will outnumber the right-wing bloc by 24 to 19, meaning the right will need to cooperate with both the FJBP and Worker's Party rebels to stand a change of at least amending minor bits of legislation. This comes as a blow to the National Party, which has ruled over Alrodey for the better part of its existence. Moreover, as the new Sämling is expected to be of such huge importance following the appointment of a new Lord Lieutenant, it will be the first time the National Party could be kept in the sidelines of the most important decisions facing Alrodey in decades. Their leader Vikton Falkner has said he believe the poll is "flat wrong" and a "misrepresentation of what he and his party hear campaigning out and about Alrodey day in and day out".

The Telegraph: Worker's Party's extreme Miners Rights Bill

Post by Gwyn Moonoak »

Ashington - Miners Rights Bill most extreme in Alrodean history

The Worker's Party, which received the most seats in the election a few months ago and relies on support from independents to pass bills through the Sämling, comes under attack for putting forward "the most extreme bill in Alrodean history". The party has been heavily criticised over its Miners Rights Bill, which tries to implement a minimum wage for miners by the backdoor. The National Party launched an attack on its opponent in government, claiming "they are risking thousands of good old jobs and the stability of the mining industry. We all want to see better working conditions and higher wages, but that does not happen by imposing government rule and endless regulation. We should be giving more power to job-creating businesses, rather than trying to regulate them" said leader Viktor Falkner.

The Worker's Party has responses by saying that, despite being "radical and ambitious", it will work to the benefit of over a million of miners across the country.

Ashington - Socialist monster roars again, says National Party leader

The leader of the National Party has claimed that the "socialist monster roars again" as Edward Weatherill and his Worker's Party propose a bill to legalise trade unions. "Firstly they forced through a miners minimum wage, against the wishes and interests of dozens of profitable job-creating businesses, and now Weatherill is trying to put employees against their boses" said Viktor Falkne for the Telegraph of Alrodey.

The response from the Prime Minister has been that this was an election pledge, and it would be "plain wrong" not to go about pursuing the policy. "Day in and day out the opposition is trying to paint us as extremist and radicals, but in fact we are doing nothing more than standing on the side of ordinary people". After the publication of the bill, rumours spread that the National Party may attempt to challenge it in the Natopian Supreme Court on grounds that it descriminates people on the basis of their employment status - workers rather than business owners - which the Prime Minister dismissed as "nonsensical".

Ashington - Trade Union bill passes as latest poll reveals massive swing to the National Party

Prime Minister Edward Weatherill has been hailed by his Worker's Party colleagues as the Trade Union Bill was passed by the Sämling today with the narrowest of margins. The Bill, which provoked intensive and lengthy debate in the chamber, was "saved" thank to a last-minute compromise agreed between the Prime Minister and a Rostock independent. It is understood Mr Weatherill won the independent's vote over by agreeing to block a planned inquiry into "the Rostock question" in which members of the Sämling are appointed by the Lord Lieutenant, rather than elected by the people of Rostock. The Prime Minister declined the accusations, claiming that "there is no clear formulated government policy on, the so-called 'Rostock problem'".

Viktor Falkner, Leader of the National Party, has described the situation in which the Worker's Party needed support from "unelected appointees" as "a constitutional crisis" in which the Prime Minister lost all credibility and must "resign immediately". The attack comes as a further blow to the minority government. In light of this, the Telegraph has commissioned a voting intention poll, which we can share with you for the first time...

Our poll reveals the party standings as follows: Worker's Party (26%), National Party (38%), FJBP (9%), UDM (15%),N&H Party (5%) and Communist Party (4%). In other words, this would be a huge swing of 7% away from the current government and into the National Party votes. To put this into perspective, based on the last election's distribution of votes this would mean a total of 17 seats will change from Red to Blue in a Sämling, namely: Ashington North, Sverreveld, East Ructon and Twigh, Norden, Mokerheim, Jarl, Muric, Wanley, Gilead, Greatwood, Honsting North, Honsting South, Hoogenstadt, Westlandt, Horn, Marken and Casterborg. In total, should our poll be correct, the National Party is to prepare for a government with a massive majority, holding 34 out of 45 elected seats with the Worker's Party coming at a distant second winning only 7 seats.

Ashington - Worker's Party triumphs in Commonwealth elections amid issues at home

Prime Minister Edward Weatherill has been vindicated following the announcement of the results from this year's Commonwealth elections. The elections are held across the Commonwealth of the Old Dominion (Klaasiya and Flaventia) to elect 250 representatives each to the organisation's Assembly. The Assembly has almost limitless powers to create laws and rules and, yes, to override Alrodean law.

The Worker's Party won 11 of the 24 seats allocated for Alrodey, while the National Party reduced its share of seats from 9 to 7. The overall picture confirms the trend seen in Klaasiya of big parties squeezing small and one-issue parties - which also seems the case in Flaventia, according to all the known results. The Prime Minister has said the results were "a testimony of people's trust in the government of Alrodey, and a good start for our internal election here". The election for the Sämling, which will determine whether or not the Mr Weatherill will remain as Prime Minister. Mid-term polls last year suggested a massive swing away from his party and into the National Party led by their brave leader Viktor Falkner. However judging on last night's results, the upcoming election will be as close as the one in 1659 with every seat and every counting.

Ashington - UDM to act as kingmakers following hung Sämling

Last night was surely a long one, with results arriving right until the early hours of today. The Prime Minister has been dealt a devastating blow, losing two seats and its majority among elected Sämling MPs. The National Party made some prominent wins in some places, but overall remained at 18 seats. The big winners of the night appear to be the UDM, who have enjoyed a strong wave of support - our political analysis's showing this is the result of Benjamin Mair taking over the Chancellorship of the Empire. So with 6 seats and a hung Sämling, the UDM will be acting as kingmakers to either Edward Weatherill or Viktor Falkner from the National Party. FJBP failed to gain any seats, despite winning over 17% of the popular vote.

Overall, 7 seats changed colour as follows:
Ashington Fenwick FJBP -> National Party
Ashington Turrick National Party -> Worker's Party
Sverreveld FJBP -> National Party
Westerheim Worker's Party -> UDM
Olesten National Party -> UDM
Honsting South Worker's Party -> UDM
Westlandt Worker's Party -> UDM

Speaking immediately after the last result was announced, National Party leader Viktor Falkner said the country had "overwhelmingly rejected the socialist dogma of the Edward Weatherill and the Worker's Party" and that he will be ready to form a government in the national interest. The Prime Minister is yet to make a statement, and he will remain in the post at least until the outcome of coalition talks is known. Rumours are his party wants him to go against long-established convention, asking the Lord Lieutenant to appoint such people as the 4 Rostock MPs as to support a Worker's Party government. This will be an outrageous power-grab which is clearly against the democratic wishes of the people of Alrodey. Moreover, it will only give the Worker's Party 25 votes, or exactly half of all MPs - meaning Weatherill will still need to rely on the support of the opposition to get bills through.

Ashington - UDM rejects deal with National Party, plunging Alrodey into crisis

The UDM leadership in Alrodey has ruled out any deals, formal or informal, with either of the two big parties. Following the election results last week, the Worker's Party ended up with a net loss of 2 seats, reducing its total number of MPs to 21. The National Party remained at 18. There is now a question of who gets to rule Alrodey if neither party or leader can command a majority in the Sämling.

Viktor Falnker, leader of the National Party, said he will "fight every attempt by the socialists to remain in power against the will of the people of Alrodey". A vote of no confidence, he assured, will be the first business of the Sämling should Prime Minister Edward Weatherill remain in power. But here's the trick - the UDM will be still forced to choose sides, despite refusing to do so. Should a VONC reach the Sämling, the UDM will have two options only - to support it, siding with the National Party, or to oppose or abstain, which will save the Worker's Party government, effectively meaning the UDM stands with the Prime Minister.

Eyes have also been set on the Lord Lieutenant, who has the power to appoint 4 representatives of Rostock, which may potentially resolve the crisis if they side with the government. But so far the Lord Lieutenant's office has consistently said it will adhere to established convention and appoint independent MPs for Rostock. Having said that, the Worker's Party has relied on votes from independents in the last Sämling to get bills through.

Ashington - Lord Lieutenant to call a fresh election after more than one year of dysfunctional government

Lord Lieutenant Gwyn Moonoak is rumored to be consulting with Alrodean officials, including the party leaders, on issuing writs for a new election after the inconclusive results from last year's election. While political power is normally exercised by the Sämling and the Prime Minister, the Lord Lieutenant retains the power to call for a fresh election. Prime Minister Edward Weatherill has been in power since 1659 when his party was elected into government. During last year's Sämling election, however, the Worker's Party lost two seats and with them its majority among elected MPs. The UMD's refusal to enter into a coalition with either of the two big parties has meant that no one can command a majority in the Sämling.

Since then the government has been in deadlock and no new laws have been passed. By calling an election, the Lord Lieutenant is hoping to break this deadlock and bring proper parliamentary governance back into Alrodey. But will the people change their verdict from last year?

Ashington - Lord Lieutenant calls election. National Party set for a landslide victory.

Lord Lieutenant Gwyn Moonoak has called an election after months of speculation of whether he will. Alrodey was left with a dysfunctional government following the 1662 election more than two years ago. The current mandate of MPs would have finished Blumuar 1665, but the Lord Lieutenant has decided to cut it short as polls have consistently suggested the stalemate will be ended, should Alrodey be allowed a fresh vote.

The failure of the Worker's Party to introduce any bills in the last session, caused by its minority status, effectively meant Edward Weatherill's was a dead government walking. Not for long, according to polls conducted on behalf of the Telegraph. Should the poll be correct, as many as 13 seats may be up for gain by the National Party, including 5 out of the 6 seats the UDM currently holds. However, the big losses are projected to be for the Worker's Party, which may be reduced to as few as 13 seats: the party's lowest since 1639.

Whatever happens on election day, the Telegraph believes a hung Sämling like the previous one is the last thing we want. The safest choice to avoid it, it appears, is by voting National.

Ashington - Worker's Party sent into the wilderness as Alrodeans endorse a majority National Party government

The people have spoken! Their verdict is a majority National Party government with 28 seats. The Worker's Party has had a devastating night, losing 11 of the 21 seats it held before the election was called. The party leader and Prime Minister Edward Weatherill said "the government has done its best at an impossible situation. Still, over our 5 years of government we have transformed Alrodey for the better", announcing his immediate resignation as Prime Minister. Mr Weatherill said he wants to remain as leader, hinting he will seek to reverse last night's result at the next election. Sources say despite the total electoral catasrophe, the now former Prime Minister still enjoys high levels of support within his own party.

Overall, the Worker's Party lost seats to the National Party and the unexpected 'winner' of the night - the Free Juice and Bagels Party. The FJBP was kicked out of the Sämling at the 1662 election, but made solid gains this time and managed to win a total of 4 seats. This makes them the third largest party following the electoral collapse of the UDM and the Liberal Democratic Party Alliance, who were reduced from 6 seats to 2. Gronkvist and Casterborg East, one of the seats the UDM lost, became the only gain of the night for the Worker's Party.

The National Party leader Viktor Falkner commented "this is the day Alrodey becomes free again, free from 5 terrible years of radical left wing ideology". He refused to comment whether the National Party government will seek to repeal the 2 acts of the Sämling passed by the last government. "We're looking forward, not backwards" he said.

Ashington - National Party to be re-elected as Lord Lieutenant calls an election

The National Party is set to win the upcoming election, despite delaying it to the very last minute. Lord Lieutenant Gwyn Moonoak signed his Writs of Election earlier today at a time when the polls are not drastically different to what they were in 1664. Almost three and a half years ago the National Party won a landslide victory, securing 28 of the 45 contested seats. The last election resulted in a change of government from the Worker's Party to the National Party.

Since then, little has happened in Alrodey. The National Party has governed without introducing any bills to the Sämling and, most notably, not even repealing legislation approved during the Worker's Party time in government. Right now, the polls suggest that the National Party is likely to keep its current number of seats, including Dominion Bovinius, Icecape and Cherry, Greatwood and Ysker which it won by margins of less than 3% at the last election. If they have an even better night, the FJBP seat of Sverreveld could also be in play.

On the opposite site, the Worker's Party is also unlikely to lose ground as many think it was reduced to its "absolute minimum" at the last election, holding most of its seats by majorities of over 10%. One has to ask, given all the hassle an election involves, is it worth doing it if the result will be the same?

Ashington - National Party retains control of the Sämling after a net loss of a single seat

The National Party's landslide victory in 1644 was pretty much repeated in this election after it emerged from it with a net loss of 1 seat. Overall, only three seats changed colour: Ashington Turrick and Norden were reclaimed by the Worker's Party of Alrodey, while Sverreveld turned blue after it saw the FJBP vote share decline.

The National Party Leader Viktor Falkner celebrated the result, saying it showed a strong desire for proper, Alrodey-first policymaking. Former Prime Minister Weatherill has said he will remain party leader despite what he called an "unsatisfactory election result".

As for the minor parties, the UDM and Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance increased its vote share, but remained fourth in terms of seats, falling behind FJBP's 3 seats. The Communists were re-elected in Combrey and Agnus and lost by a margin of 1% to the National Party in Allesley.

Ashington - Klaasiya's minor Tsar pays a visit to Alrodey

Tsar Llŷr, who is Klaasiya's minor monarch, has arrived in Ashington for a working visit in Alrodey. The visit, which is the first visit by a ruling demesnal leader in recorded Alrodean history, is expected to last four days. The visit is rumoured to have been arranged by the Lord Lieutenant, who also happens to be Llŷr's half-brother leading Klaasiya's regency council. As part of the trip, Klaasiya's Tsar will meet with Prime Minister Viktor Falkner and opposition leader Edward Weatherill, however there are no known plans to meet with leaders of the smaller parties.

On his second day, the minor Tsar will pay a visit to the Samling, which he wants to explore and learn more about as part of his quest toward introducing a democratic chamber in one of the Empire's most dictatorial demesnes.

So far, the royal kid only said he is "honoured and delighted" to visit "yet another beautiful part of the Empire" and praised Alrodean's "strong and long-established democratic roots".

Ashington - Faro creates a People’s Assembly to sit in Ashington

His Dynastic Highness the Faro has joined his not so distant relative the Tsar of Klaasiya to create a Legislature, which will feature 4 chambers. One of these chambers, arguably the most democratic and powerful, which is the People’s Assembly, will have a seat in Ashington, Alrodey.

The Prime Minister Viktor Falkner congratulated the Faro on his bold decision and welcomed the announcement that the 444-member People’s Assembly will meet in Ashington. He said work on contracting a building large enough to host all representatives and their staff shall commend “immediately”. It is expected that the Prime Minister will introduce such legislation to the Samling soon.

The National Party later also confirmed that partial funding has already been allocated by the Faro. “The National Party government has worked extremely hard and secured much-needed and crucial funding that will benefit Alrodey for decades to come” the statement read.

Ashington - National Party secures historic victory at first Flaventian Senate elections

The National Party has emerged victorious from yet another election, this time winning 7 out of the 11 seats Alrodey has in the Congress of the Lands, simply referred to as Senate. The election, held earlier this week, was the first of its kind. All of Alrodey's 5 major parties participated, but only three won seats.

The Worker's Party suffered another major defeat from the government, winning only 3 seats in the at-large election. Former Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition Edward Weatherill said the election was "another good democratic exercise" and that the Worker's Party Senators will work constructively within the Congress. He refused to comment on the reasons why his party came a distant second.

Also winning a seat was the FJBP party, which was benefited from the more proportional electoral system used for the Congress, compared to the first past the post utilised at Sämling elections.

Analysists commissioned by the Telegraph said that, had this been a national election, the governing National Party would likely have increased both its vote share and its number of seats. Viktor Falkner's popularity has continued to increase in recent days and weeks following the announcement of investment in Alrodey to build Flavenita's People's Assembly.
