The Elves

Post by Lord Erion »

The Elves once had a mighty kingdom, the seat of which was in Elivia. Their kingdom expanded rapidly after the fall of the Micron Empire, and then fell, as its ally had. This was due to the eon-long rivalry between Tunare and Elthedion, the Elvish gods, and Urkar, the Tyrant of the Orcs. For, in the beginning, the three gods were united in caring for the elvish people.

But then, Urkar grew greedy, and along with the God of giants, Ogrask, was persuaded to become a Vardia. Those elves who followed him became Orcs, brutish and savage, with only a tiny memory of their past. In the oldest orc legends, elvish heroes are mentioned under different names. And so a hatred sprang up between the two gods of the elves, and the god of orcs. So Urkar, in his malice, eventually plotted the destruction of the Elf Kingdoms, and made it so.

The Elf Kingdoms were noble and devout to the gods. The elves in general were like humans, except they had a natural aptitude for magic, and were taller, slimmer and had the stereotypical pointed, lobeless ears. Though not as civilised as they became later, they possessed iron weapons and advanced armour, chain mail, not the tanned hides of the human tribes. Most of the common elves followed the Apolloist religion, splitting Tunare and Elthedion into many gods.

There are six of these recorded, three for each god. Raven, god of magic and night. Bear, god of strength and war. Polecat, god of wisdom. Dolphin, goddess of joy. Hawk, goddess of the hunt. Frog, goddess of birth. These, of course, are Common translations. Raven’s name in Elvish was Nervógetfutár, or Black-Bird-Flying-Over-Land. There was also Urch, god of darkness, evil and all other nemeses to life.

After the fall of the Elf Kingdoms, the elves split into various factions and sects. Some delved deep underground, and became the drow, their hearts twisted by an evil spirit they found there called Bodai. In the Elvish tongue, their name was the Daal Duva, or Dark Elves. Some tried to keep their ancient order, and to emulate the Microns, becoming the Daal Kaoda, or High Elves. Some strode into the woods, and did not come out, communing with the tree spirits. These were the Daal Cryna, the Wood Elves. Some retreated into the wide steppes, becoming more savage than they had been. These were the Daal Groda, the Wild Elves. Still others followed their hearts to see, and when their ships broke against rocks, they dived below the depths. These elves, blessed by Uisceor and his servants, were the Daal Ishka, the Sea Elves.

Most, however, fled to every end of Tirlar, forgetting their previous glory, and trying to adjust to their circumstances. These are the roving elves, who become warriors, bards, grocers, or whatever catches their fancy. They are referred to contemptuously by all other elves, even the Daal Groda, as the Daal Derma, The Elves Who Have Forgotten.

And then they met the Babkhans, which is when matters really started going down hill for the little buggers. Damned Elfinshi.
