Some information blurbs

Post by Hadrian Myksos »

Here I will write down some minor 'blurbs': it are thoughts, little ideas and facts about our country as it is now (or was at the moment I wrote it down). Others are free to discuss about what I wrote down or can use it if they are writing a story about Apollonia.

Main goal is to give an idea of how things work (or worked) without me having to write a gigantic topic with info. Most of it will also be implemented on our wiki page.

The Armed Forces
Apollonians who hear someone say the words 'Army' will often immediately think about the most prestigious part of it: the Legion. Those who thought of something else, are most likely part of the other branches. Nonetheless, it is only a minor fraction of what makes the military apparatus of the Republic.

Navy and Air Force
The Navy has been, traditionally, small and almost non-existent. The isolated Kildari never felt threatened by foreign invasions (at least not from the seaside). During the periods that the power of the Dutch was limited, there were no - of almost no - investments in the fleet. The pirates of Norfolk and Raynor Isles profited from this (some even say that the Dukes received their fair share and it's indeed true that properties of the Dutches were left relatively untouched by the sea folk). Private initiatives were shown throughout history and a national naval fleet was established through the creation of the Maritime Apollonian Customs Service.
Massive investments by Caudillo Trajan allowed the Fleet to expand considerably and ultimately ended the pirates' raids on Apollonian territory.

The Air Force is also limited in size, and mostly has airships in service with heavy artillery.

The Legions
The Legions, well-known under the name they received during the Revolution of 5552 ASC: the National Protection Army, is the most prestigious branch of the military. Not only is it active on the land (Apollonians, with exception of those in Nessus, tend to look down on marines), but it's also the best equipped.
While it is not officially, the National Protection Army follows a policy of allowing Audente in their ranks as soldiers and officers. This habit dates back to the time of Dutch Taodosius and Dutchess Sophia who wanted to have an army of which they were certain that it would stay loyal to their Audente roots (instead of choosing the side of local rebels). Because Audentior (now the province of Apollantis and Apollo City) has always had a surplus of citizens, it could easily deliver the much-needed manpower (also lowering unemployment in that region at the cost of other regions).
Nowadays there is more criticism on this policy, but most Senators (who got their position after their military service) are Audente from descent and ignore these pleas.

Each Legion consists of approximately 20,000 men. With the 20 Legions being active, this makes a total sum of 400,000 men serving the country.

National Defence Forces
It began as the Kildarian Defence Forces in 4022 ASC with the main goal of defending the Zygus Qamil. It both grew and shrink in size throughout its existence and was till the establishment of the Legions the main defence force of Kildare. With the outbreak of the Revolution of 5552 ASC, the Defence Forces were with less than 5,000. After the Revolution, Trajan Myksos ordered its expansion. With the militarisation of the Apollonian society and the inclusion of other military forces (from Aryasht, Nessus and the River Warriors) the numbers of soldiers are once again expanding (in 5690 they were with approximately 500,000).
While being a Defence soldiers doesn't give much prestige (even the equipment is hardly up-to-date), it is a great chance to make a career.

Officers
In both the Defence Forces and Legion the officer corps is mostly composed from Blackrockians or those who received training from a Blackrockian (and began seeing themselves as Blackrockian). This has more to do with - once more - the prestige than their experience on the field.

As the saying goes: "A good officer is Blackrockian. A good Legionnaire is Audente. Good cannon fodder is the rest."

Jieguo Jishu

While not officially a part of the military, the Jieguo Jishu ("it's the result that matters") has sizable firepower through its control of many casinos throughout the Republic. The officer who pays off his gambling or narcotics debts by "lending" a platoon or even a legion to the secret service wouldn't be the first. Members of the service are forbidden (on punishment of death by torture) to work directly in the casinos or the narcotics, this work is usually delegated to native Kildari. The Jieguo Jishu also has its own foot soldiers, the "Pluckers of the Weeds", the "Gatherers of the Plucked Weeds" and the "Burners of the Plucked Weeds". It is usually the task of the Pluckers to do the dirty work on the streets, assassinating enemies of the Caudillo and/or the Jieguo Jishu itself, while the "Gatherers of the Plucked Weeds" are concerned with abducting more notable citizens of the Republic into the caverns of the service underneath the city of Aracigrad, where they are to be tried and punished. The Jieguo Jishu consists mostly of people of Jingdaoese or Gong-Jingdaoese descent, many of them are direct descendants of Tegong officers of Imperial Jingdao, on which the Jieguo Jishu is modeled. The Jieguo Jishu cooperates with Te Gong Li Political Services in the Island Federation of Gong and Jingdao. Patron Saint of Jieguo Jishu is Emperor Jezza Rasmus of Jingdao, who had the Tegong infiltrate Kildare during the Apollonian Era of Jingdao.

He failed of course. The Arbiter intervened and no Jingdaoese set foot on Kildari soil ever again.

Military ranks and units
Most Apollonian military ranks date back to times long before the start of the Apollonian Republic. It was Dutch Fax Celestis who laid the foundations of the military titles in Kildare and those ranks would, for most of Kildare's history, stayed almost unchanged.

This is a guide into the most important military ranks and units.

Caudillo
Technically not a military rank, but nonetheless seen by the public as one. Often referred to as the 'supreme commander in chief'. The Caudillo represents the armed forces and is often seen wearing an uniform.

Dant
During the Ducal era this was a title associated with the Dutch, as both titles were in most cases held by the same person. Only on rare occasions this was was not the case.

Nowadays the Dant is the commander of a military branch. In total their are four branches (and four Dants): one for the National Protection Army (Legion), one for the Defence Forces, one for the Navy and one for the Air Force.
It speaks for itself that the last two rarely have any say in military affairs. The Dant of the National Protection Army is in most cases, but not necessarily, also the Caudillo.

Legate
A military rank which is granted by the Seanad to a Senator to overview a Legion or Defence Corps. In most cases a Legate is granted supervision over one or two Legions. He acts as a representative of the Seanad and Caudillo.

Mil
Commanding officer of a Legion or Defence Corps (equivalent of a Legion in the Defence Forces). Has around 20,000 Legionnaires/soldiers under him.

Tweg
Commanding officer of a Division. Has around 10,000 Legionnaires/soldiers under him.

Caud
Commanding officer of a Brigade. Has around 5,000 Legionnaires/soldiers under him.

Cent
Commanding officer of a Regiment. Has around 1,000 Legionnaires/soldiers under him.

Dec
Commanding officer of a cohort. Has around 500 Legionnaires/soldiers under him.

Aksai
Commanding officer of a century. Has around 100 Legionnaires/soldiers under him.

Optio
Commanding officer of a squadron. Has around 50 Legionnaires/soldiers under him.
