Re: Elections for Speaker of the House
Honourable Members of the House,
I come before you today, most humbly, as a candidate for the office of Speaker. This is a post I seek not without some degree of trepidation, for I believe it is key to the functioning of our fledgling democracy. It is my view that the Speakership should be a position which is representative of the House of Arasha, alongside with leading it. I look at the Speaker as I would look at the leader of a wolf-pack: in command of the pack, but still a wolf, still a part of the hunt, like any other member.
If elected Speaker, I would immediately endeavor to establish a clear and basic set of rules for procedure in the House. The goal would be to ensure that order could be kept in the House, without undue influence from any one person inside or outside the chamber; as well, we must strive to iron out many of the ambiguities which exist in our system, such as how to elect our officials, how the House can express itself outside of passing laws, and so forth.
If elected Speaker, I would appoint Deputy Speakers, representative of our different political factions, so as to stave off the possibility of inactivity, or throwing the House into chaos and political in-fighting.
If elected Speaker, I would ensure that rules are established which would allow the Speaker to have a voice in the House, while not being able to overly influence events. I believe the first duty of the post is to act as a moderator, a judge of parliamentary procedure; however, I also believe the person holding the post must be allowed to have an opinion and serve the constituents who have duly chosen him or her to govern the Free State.
If elected Speaker, I would ensure the inclusion of provisions for committees, so that we might ably divide the laborious process of legislation into manageable segments, as well as to increase transparency. We, as the deputies of the people, must not strive to be apart from the citizenry, we must be willing to open our doors to ensure all know our business, and see that it is ultimately their business.
I am a native of this land, and we must contend with divisions of land, culture, and faith. There is much justice to be sought; however, if we can strive to seek justice through law, reason, and debate, then we may truly be considered a nation of value. It begins with this body, and it begins with those we appoint as our leaders. I seek the post of Speaker not to lead as one man, but to guide this body as a shining example of brotherhood in our civic affairs.
I yield the floor.

Members of the House,
It is with great pride that I accept my election as Speaker. I am truly humbled by the confidence that my fellow members have exhibited in granting me the helm of the legislative ship. More than that, as the son of native Eurans, as one who fights for justice for his own people, and for all who live under the rule of law, I am eager to helpp lead the fight for human rights, to ensure that this House will be the source of equality, the source of freedom.
