Strange Loop

A small island off the Kildari coast. Once a remote holding of Kaikias-Overseas, now a remote holding of the Mango Throne. House Octavius calls this perpetually overcast land its new home.

Strange Loop

Post by Mira Octavius-Aryani »

The pale light of Tarsica shone through the bare trees and onto fresh, undisturbed snow. Tarsica was a waning gibbous off the shoulder of the Swordsman of the Sky.

The woods began to glow with a throbbing yellow, immediately disturbing a small flock of birds and scattering them to the air. The throbbing had a metallic taste to it, if one were there to perceive it. With each throb, this patch of woods glowed a brighter yellow. Branches swayed towards and away the center of the glow in time with each throbbing. Wildlife and human instinct would agree that this phenomenon was one to be avoided, and as the intensity increased, more fauna abandoned this patch of woods for quieter, less unsettling corners.

The throbbing reached a buzzing peak before the hole crackled open. An orb formed in a gap between the trees, then widened along one particular plane to form a thick disc of light. The center formed a gap and it became a torus, its axis pointed at an awkward angle. The edge of the torus rolled and coiled with unearthly energy until the gap in the center reached a width large enough for a human to walk through. At that point, the pattern of energy shifted and the torus of light became fixed.

A robot emerged from within the torus and fell to the ground once clear of it. Behind it, a human figure, dressed in a grey-white isolation suit, followed out. The figure was armed with a rifle, which was pointed all the way around the perimeter before lowered. Several more emerged from the torus after that. Some set up devices around the torus to further stabilize the portal. Others began to erect a shelter. Four pairs extended the perimeter outward from the immediate vicinity of the torus. Two dozen came out from the torus in total that night. By dawn, the team had relayed a message back through the toroidal portal, back to the team on the opposite side, back to Station 01, back to the Deep Research facility dug deep into the mountain of Panakley-South, in Kezan. Their message, while reporting on the success of the experiment and on the conditions met on the other side, included two pieces of important information that had been derived from a combination of long-range commercial radio signals, astronomical observation, and determining geographic coordinates:
  • Wastes of Harad Freenesia
    13.VIII.1501
An anchor was buried just below the ground under the torus. After a week at the site, the team collected all of their belongings and passed them back through to the far side of the portal again. Once the last of them and their equipment was through, the portal closed and that part of the woods lost the yellow glow that had characterized it during the time it had been open. The only thing of note in the immediate vicinity was the corpse of a hunter, who had had a bad end with a bear. The man had died that first night. In fact, his death was what had made it possible. With his death and descent into the abyssal plane, the field team was able to lock onto his residual connection between the worlds and follow it back to the mortal plane. Despite being 1650 AN back at headquarters, it was 1501 AN here, due to a lack of temporal continuity between the two planes. Their anchor, a seemingly innocuous block of granite, shaped into a dodecahedron, ensured that they could return at their leisure to this site and this time, even after the residual connection had long faded away. Coded upon the anchor's surface was the number 315.
