*Climbs a podium and grabs the mike*

Welcome comrades! I hereby call this first Grand Assembly to order, since it is Sunday somewhere in the world now. I propose the following meeting agenda:
1. Opening of the meeting
2. Election of Speaker for the meeting (subject to instant recall)
3. Agenda for the day
4. Charter for the Commune (with basic guidelines for our common good)
5. Selection of officials
6. Reports from the neighborhoods
7. Reports from the committees
8. Ratification of decisions
9. Other issues
10. Next Grand Assembly
11. Closing of the meeting

Apparently not. I accept the position of Speaker for this Grand Assembly.

Can we approve the agenda for the day, with the addition of a new 4. Symbols of the commune?

I object to the proposed addendum. I believe it is unnecessary at the time to discuss that when haven't even discussed the basics.

That said, I agree to the original proposed agenda and move that we accept that.

If there is still interest for symbols later, put it under 9.

But for the record, I think symbols is a bourgeois totemism we should try and rid ourselves from.

We move the symbols section to "other issues", and the agenda is thereby passed.

Now, we come to the section "Charter for the commune". What should be our basic principles? Do we need any?

Comrades!

I wish that our charter should bring up the basic things.

Authority. We need to discuss authority, its enforcement (if any) and how to make sure that the collective majority trespass on an individual or a small group of kindred people.

We need to discuss what many here think is a good concept, the ability/need ratio. If it's an important principle, what do we mean by it?

If we perhaps begin from here, other things will coem to us.

I dislike the use of the word authority. Since we are supposed to function as a community, we need a space for the community to make decisions. The final decision-making body of the community should be the People's Assembly. All residents gather to discuss and vote on different matters. We also need people to execute those decisions. When we cannot do that as a community, we could have an executive officer to do that for us. Of course subject to recall and ratification. This position should rotate among us as to prevent the forming of an elite.

All this aside, we need to decide on a set of principles that we wish to live by. My first suggestion is that our core principle should be "from each according to ability, to each according to need". By this I simply mean that we as a community expect that each member contributes to the common good as much as they can. If that condition is met, they will have all needs met, like housing, food, leisure. This way, all people can contribute, regardless of age, disability, skills. I also propose that we decide what our basic rights are. The usual human rights, like right to privacy, religious freedom, conscience, assembly, thought, speech. There are other rights as well, the right to contribute, the right to a home, the right to food, the right to freedom.

Those are some thoughts from me, here in my tent. Now I shall sleep and perhaps be more coherent tomorrow.

What if two people both need some rivalrous resource to contribute their best, and nobody's sure which could make more use of it?

How can you be free if everything you do has to support not only you, but the community? In this terrible society, one doesn't live for him/herself anymore, but for the community. How can such a person be called free?

ari: Deal with it. If you can't, we are contemplating a system for peaceful arbitration in disputes.

Jack: If the society is terrible, you are free to not be here. I would call it reciprocal freedom based on free association, that is, I help you, you help me, and we agree to do that because we are a community and we all need each other. I prefer that to the capitalist system which is based on coercion, alienation and egotism.

I make the first proposal of this assembly:
I propose that the Grand Assembly of the Point May Commune conclude the following:

That our fundamental principle is "From each according to ability, to each according to need".

The basic meaning of the principle is that each resident shall contribute to the common good to the best of their ability, which guarantees the satisfaction of all basic needs of said person.
I welcome thoughts, comments, seconds.

No-one in society should go hungry or homeless. That much is pretty reasonable, I think I can agree with it. But suppose someone has a fatal disease that a team of expensive foreign specialists could hold back for a few months, or in fact maybe one that could theoretically be treated with great investment into a medical research program. A question of life and death is certainly one of need, and maybe one day our understanding of the universe will be at a level where we can serve everyone's needs... but I'm not sure it's an expense that can be paid just yet.

It is hard to formulate a principle that can be used for every eventuality, every situation and every person at every time in human history. What I propose we do is find a principle that holds true for a vast majority of cases.
