New Terrain Mapping Project

Post by Max II »

Inspired by recently cartographical musings (not to mention Shyriath's very fine work), I've decided to have a have another look at properly mapping the Union's territories (with a view to guiding more detailed development). It's early days, but this small map shows the sort of thing that should be possible:

Image

The plan is to use Paint to well...paint...the broad brush-strokes of the relief and then to vectorise the result, allowing for more detail to be added.

It is possible, here is the map I made for Calbion some time ago:

1.Titus Morvayne, Prefect of Shirekeep, Count of the Skyla Islands
2.Eki Aholibamah Verion, Queen in the North
3. Ludovic Verion, Lord of Blackstone and Governor-General of the Iron Company
4. Jeremy Harwinsson Archer, super sleuth

That's a smart map of Calbion, Jack.

This map shows the current state of the project, now expanded to south-western Cibola:

Ideally, I'd like to co-ordinate this project with neighbouring states, although currently the only neighbouring state is Hamland...

We're pretty close too. On the other hand I'm not a perfectionist in cartography so I will probably not get involved.

Cartography is the backbone of micronationalism. ;)

Micronationalism was declared heresy by Emperor Jezza.

Emperor Jezza can stick his declarations somewhere inapropriate.

I will not engage in talk like this, especially not in the territory of our esteemed Sanguno-Leichenbergish neighbors.

These look absolutely fantastic! I'd be more than happy to help with any project in this regard. I've been trying to update all our maps following the expansion so this is a pretty decent time for me. Just let me know what needs done.

*edit - Just to get some practice I've done this. Is this the sort of thing you are after?

This is the kind of thing I'd be very interested in. If you wouldn't mind making one for Senya and the area around Lake Lamantia (+Tiana) that'd be grand :D

Fair enough! My approach is admittedly rather involved, but my hope is that a large scale terrain map will allow for some really detailed development.

Execellent...and yes, that's the sort of thing!

If you enlarge the map I posted, you'll see a "scale" of different colours in the middle of the ocean. What I've tried to do is take the existing MCS terrain map and break down the gradations to allow for more detail; so, the two lowest colours translate to the dark green on the MCS map, the next two to the lighter green, the next three to the tan and the highest three to the orange areas. It's not an exact match of course, but it's useful to have a standard.

To be honest, I wasn't envisaging extending this project beyond southern Cibola at this stage...although that is a possibility for the future. It was also my intention that interested parties co-ordinate their own national mapping projects: it wasn't offering to make all the maps myself! My advice is to just give it a go, as you will likely have a much better idea of the terrain of your country than I do. Time permitting, I'm happy to offer some advice and feedback as I find it helps to have a second opinion of things. :)

Aah, my mistake, I apologise. What software do you use?

No apologies needed!

For these maps, I used MS Paint...but the map below was produced with Inkscape.

Slowly...

The main challenge is sheer scale; even a few pixels on the MCS map represents hundreds of square kilometres, so adding any real detail is a very time-consuming process.

This rough map (still a work in progress) shows the heartlands of Leichenberg at a scale of 1 pixel to 1 kilometre:

Image

If it looks rather "blocky", it's because the boundaries and contour lines have been plotted from the small, MCS-derived terrain map. As time allows, I hope to detail it properly...but that's going to be a massive job.

Thanks for the feedback. Aye. I think I can translate the maps. I actually got a lot done fairly quickly! I did the whole central Commonwealth.

One problem was the rough scale of mountains. Are you going for sticking to the heights of the MCS maps? I think your mountains look higher. If I sort out your approach I should be able to help if you just let me know what to fill in.

The next point was that I looked up real maps and it turned out I had a silly amount of flat land. I'm not sure how to solve this without starting again though.

An extension of the terrain into the vicinity of Tieya:

See also the very basic map of Tieya built on this.

I, er, I fiddled a little with the bits just on either side of the borders with Steeria and Leichenberg. I avoided touching anything that looked important, Rossheim, but let me know if something needs changing back.

That looks okay to me. It would only be a problem if you changed terrain that defines the various borders...otherwise I can work around it.
