The volunteers are exposed to fear-inducing dreams in order to maximise their processing potential and as a pay-off they earn (bitcoin style) credits for each computation achieved and are rewarded with euphoric dreams whilst they are in REM state and prior to awakening, the stage at which dreams are most likely to be remembered, thus lessening negative associations with the process.
This is always a good concept. I prefer the form that's purified down to a thought experiment, where you just simply transfer out an equal amount of hours of sleep from person to person (i.e. one person physically spends time sleeping, the other gets the mental and physical rest). It's pretty obvious that beyond some point in productivity you get CEOs and high-powered engineers and etc. who spend none of their time at all asleep, and below some point, you get people who only wake up for bodily needs and spend 23.5 hours a day in bed (remembering that they need to spend some time sleeping for themselves, too!). Would be interesting to try to figure what the equilibrium price for an hour of wake time would be, and what would happen to the bottom end of the labor market when you could always just sleep for pay.

I don't know about working it out but I am sold on the idea of sleep farms.

Please - using humans as a CPU... using people as a battery would be just plain ridiculous...
