Types of Marriages According to the Ancient Rites

Post by Aryeztur »

A marriage is valid or can be conducted between people in all these circumstances to be accepted by Ritam and Anushasan.
Rite of Brahmana (Brahma) - where the father of the bride invites a learned man with good conduct, and gives his daughter in marriage to him after decking her with jewels and costly garments.

Rite of the Gods (Daiva) - where the daughter is groomed with ornaments and given to a priest who duly officiates at a sacrifice during the course of its performance of this rite.

Rite of the Rishis (Arsha) - when the father gives away his daughter after receiving a cow and a bull from the bridegroom.

Rite of the Prajapati - (Prajapatya) where the father gives away his daughter after blessing the couple with the text "May both of you perform together your duties"

Rite of the Asuras (Demons) - when the bridegroom receives a maiden after bestowing wealth to the kinsmen and to the bride according to his own will.

Rite of the Gandharva (Muses)- the voluntary union of a maiden and her lover, which arises from desire and sexual intercourse for its purpose.

Rite of the Rakshasa (Monsters) - forcible abduction of a maiden from her home after her kinsmen have been slain or wounded and their houses broken open.

Rite of the Pisaka (Ghouls) - when a man by stealth seduces a girl who is sleeping or intoxicated or is mentally imbalanced or handicapped.

I should note: the last two types of "marriage" are now illegal. The Rite of the Gandharva is the most common in these times.

Rakshasa, hopefully...(for greater purity, it is what Sisera would have wanted)

Interesting... in the Mesior and Aina Wards of Lunaris, it is considered extraordinarily good luck to take a wife exhibiting the features to which the Rite of Pisaka applies - with combinations of said bridal characteristics being especially fortuitous. A wife who exhibits all four elements - specifically a girl of sub-functional IQ afflicted by florid insanity who spends her days in a drunken coma - would represent a nigh-on invincible talisman, warding off any and all dark forces one could wish to imagine and conferring effective immortality on her husband for the duration of her own lifetime.

One can only assume this custom dates from the Arya occupation of Lunaris, as a relic of the rites described above...
