HAWKS PUSH MAINLAND OVER EGDE

Mishalan City (Mishalan) – The procrastinating attitude by hawks to allow an immediate referendum in Lun Ezkaron has served to push mainlanders over the edge. In an emergency meeting held by the governments of Oleslaad and Mishalan, the two voted overwhelmingly to unite and form Greater Mishalan. Adding insult to Anun, the provisional politburo, or executive political committee, announced it would be taking over day-to-day affairs of Greater Mishalanski government, electing Sasha Rykov to the position of Chairman. With Anun refusing to react to the violence and mounting problems on the mainland, Greater Mishalan has stated that it will allow a referendum to be held in Lun Ezkaron, clearly paving the way for that area to join the rest of the Elw constituency in Elwynn Proper.

Elements of the National Guard, presently deployed across the eastern mainland regions, and composed almost entirely of ethnic mainlanders, has defected, refusing orders to put down the revolt and even taking a stance of non-violence. Chairman Rykov has made it clear that “no treasonous or traitorous acts of violence will be tolerated against Amokolia or anyone else”, further adding, “The formation of Greater Mishalan will facilitate a government of equals between the mainland and the rest of Amokolia”. Rykov and Amokolian Premier Orion are reportedly in talks discussing the future of the Amokolian state right now.

In the meantime, the change in government and the announcement to allow a referendum has brought an abrupt halt to the majority of the violence. Mobs have completely dissipated in Vattnaland, and crews of workers and humanitarian aides are working with volunteers and municipal officials to clean up and put things back in order. The situation in the Mishalan Corridor and southwards is in a much more critical state however. Although much of the violence has been halted, mobs still persist after so much chaos. Furthermore, millions of dollars worth of damage has been caused by the riots, and workmen are frantically trying to assist people, tend wounded, and return infrastructure to some form of normalcy.

The Greater Mishalan Politburo is preparing to allow the referendum in Lun Ezkaron. Despite the damage and chaos, polling stations are being set up to allow voters to decide the fate of the region. A thorough registration system is being established to ensure fairness in the decision, and officials from the Union government have been invited to verify results. This has quelled the majority Elw population, but has left Amokolians feeling cheated. “We shed blood to keep our homes,” said one bystander. “Yet just because a bunch of Elw put up a stink, we have to lose half our country. It ain’t fair I tell ya!” Chairman Rykov however backed the decision saying, “We cannot purport to call ourselves a democracy unless we are willing to let the majority decide their own fate”.

Amokolian Premier Orion flew to Eliria late this afternoon to speak before the Senate, urging them provide a longer timeframe in which to establish a dialogue. “We need time to meet with the leaders of the various parties now representing the mainland,” said the Premier. “There is no doubt that the mainland will now decide its own destiny and that these changes will result in even greater changes to the government of all Amokolia”. This statement in itself was an admission that Anun will likely recognize the new government of Greater Mishalan so long as it remains a part of Amokolia, a position Chairman Rykov has indicated he is favorable towards.

With these recent events seemingly satiating the Elw contingent, the question remains hanging of how the government plans to compensate Amokolians – if not physically, at least mentally. With many Amokolians feeling cheated by both the local government and the Union government there is a strong likelihood that opposition parties may rise swiftly and popularly. As one commentator wrote, “Amokolians need something they can grasp. They need to feel as if this wasn’t a war they just lost”.
