Smoke from Raynor's Keep

The often renovated, and not infrequently burnt, Prefectoral complex in the capital city of Shirekeep. Charged with the thankless task of civic administration in the most malodorous and ungovernable city ever conceived.

Smoke from Raynor's Keep

Post by Mira Octavius-Aryani »

"I appreciate the vigor in which you have begun retraining your soldiers." Mira said, sitting in an ornate chair, reading a report issued by the Chamber of the Crypteia. "We must raise the Palatini Corps above that of the regular army and become the loyal, efficient force that His Imperial Magnificence can trust upon. Convey my instructions to Legate Guadalim that these measures be followed throughout the Corps."

"Aye aye, sir."

"You're in the Army now, Legate." Mira said, flipping the page and continuing to scan the document. "Ayes are for sailors."

"Yes, sir. Understood."

Mira stopped and looked up at Legate Inurion, who was dressed in a crisp, fresh Palatini Corps dress uniform. "On second thought, perhaps it would be worthwhile to maintain a difference between the regular army and the Palatini Corps. Carry on."

"Aye aye, sir." Legate Inurion saluted and turned to the door. One of the Sentinels posted at the door made way for the Legate, then returned to a sentry pose.

Mira finished reading the report, then handed it to her niece and personal secretary, Jamie III Octavius-Leilani, who filed it away for later disposal. Mira dictated some notes to be passed on to various offices and officers, then sent Jamie on her way while she herself settled in behind her desk to read over another report, this time from the newly-created Office for the Removal of Subversive Elements. Apparently, some of the senior officers were requesting leniency in exchange for giving up names. The report needed no orders given, the office was operating fine on its own.

Another report, operational concerns about allowing certain incarcerated officers, listed by name, to reintegrate back into the Imperial Army and continue their grift and abuse of fellow officers. Mira scribbled "cashier them?" in the margin. Another, this time regarding her duties as Steward rather than as acting Minister of Military Affairs, concerning the drafting of some legislative issues. Mira didn't have a chance to finish reading that one before the explosion engulfed her, her desk, the Sentinels, and the entire room.

Eventually, the investigation would conclude that the source of the explosion was a modified anti-tank mine, which had been installed between two joists in the floor. The explosion obliterated almost the entire room near-instantly, as well as damaging the support beams for the floor above. A room full of file cabinets and archivists tumbled down into the freshly-destroyed remains of the Steward's private office as soon as the floor gave way.

When the explosive had been installed was unclear, though some of the investigators quietly suspected that it had taken place at some point in II.1654, when outgoing steward, Liv Dravot, ordered a hasty renovation shortly before her term ended. Insurance against the so-called nobles' democracy of allowing the Landsraad to elect the Imperial Republic's stewards and choose someone who opposed the Imperial Mother.

Mira III of Octavius-Aryani quietly visited Montrano in order to swear fealty to Kaiser Ayreon IV as Countess of Shirekeep, then returned to Kezan with the body of her elder for burial.
