The Day of the Oustfest

The often renovated, and not infrequently burnt, Prefectoral complex in the capital city of Shirekeep. Charged with the thankless task of civic administration in the most malodorous and ungovernable city ever conceived.

The Day of the Oustfest

Post by Verion »

Ludovic strode across Shirekeep Yard. The meeting with the Captain of the City Guard had gone as planned. Everything was arranged, and the Oustfest was bound to be a massive success. This could be the best day in his entire life. While he walked through the gates in the direction of Raynortoo Park, he contemplated everything. Closely examining every step he had taken in the past week, and thinking about details that he might have overlooked, and that could stir trouble. He couldn't think of everything. Of course, there were points of concern, and it was impossible to know how every actor in this grand play would react to the unfolding events of the day, but he was quite pleased with the way he had thought everything through. He smiled, satisfied.

He cherished the peace and quiet whilst strolling through the park in the direction of the Keep. The upcoming hours would be far from peaceful. When he had almost arived at the Keep, some officials from the Office of Bounties and Factorage had joined him, as well as a small group of Guardsmen and his sentinels. He had arranged for them to meet up with him here. It wouldn't be sufficient to enter the Keep alone. All high officials of the nation would be there, and he had to make an impression.

Ludovic entered the Keep, feeling a slight sense of agitation in his stomach. It wasn't nerveousness, no, it was exitement. He loved this. Still, he managed to keep a solemn, stern look on his face. Showing emotion, he thought, was a sign of weakness. Even if it was a positive emotion. He nodded briefly to the servants who welcomed him and his entourage into the Keep. He was lead down to a pavilion near the Golden Gate, where appropriate seating was arranged. He saw some of the other nobles already there. Ludovic warmly greated the Arbiter and the King of Voltrue. He managed to avoid the Prefect, who was leaning against a table, dressed in an awful scarlet robe. He did, however, exchange some awkward greetings with the Praetor and the Steward. He managed to produce a rather painful grin, that was mistakenly interpreted as a smile. Ludovic was happy when he finally could take his seat, next to that of the Minister of the Interior. Now, the only thing that was missing was the Kaiser...

The North-East Gate through which the Kaiser now entered would, he considered, have to be renamed as something fitting to remember this day by. The name Porta Triumphalis came, unbidden, to the forefront of his mind. So be it, he thought as he passed under the imposing turreted citadel that marked the partition line between the old Imperial County, now under Elwynnese rule, and the ancient city of Shirekeep. "My capital." he murmured to himself as he afforded himself one last glance upwards before walking on.

In a show of humility he had entered the city on foot. The procession had mustered in the open space of the Valley of Mors well before first light. From there it had managed a slow walking pace, before reaching the walls at midday. As he passed back into the afternoon light which shone upon the Nobles Avenue the honour guard of City Watchmen in parade armour presented their cudgels in salute. The first of the many, many, choirs stationed along the intended route of the procession broke out into sonorous song.

As the choir reached their climatic moment of hailing the entry of the Lord into the city of peace a servitor of the outer sanctum led forth the Kaiser's prized white stallion towards which he smartly walked. The servitor bowed before going down on his knees and cupping his hands in order to give the Kaiser's boot the boost needed for him to vaunt deftly up into the saddle. As he did so a voice, loud and clear rang out from amongst the choir.

"Behold a white horse! And he who sat on it had a bow; and a crown was given to him, and he went out conquering and to conquer!"

As this, the flag waving multitude of the common-folk, whom the Kaiser was gratified to see had turned out in an appreciable number, broke out into a cheer. As well they might cheer for the wealth that he was to shower and scatter amongst them. If this was any indication, the day promised to be an auspicious one. The Sentinels in their beige uniforms and silver plated armour fell in about him in a box formation, four to his front, four to his rear and four on either side - amounting to his full close personal protection detail of sixteen Sentinels, handpicked veterans of the Imperial Forces, loyal to the Kaiser alone. Their duty was to do and die as he commanded and to lay down their lives when necessary in order to save their master.

Yet the weather was glorious, the skies were clear and with the warming rays of life giving Atos falling upon his face, the Kaiser, as he basked in the almost sincere adulation of the populace could not envisage any need for them to do so this day.

Stood in amongst the throng of nobles and Imperial Commission holders Tokaray glanced across and had to suppress a moment of surprise in seeing the the Prefect of Shirekeep furiously berating one of his servants. Curious, he edged across towards the scene that Audun Joel was making.

"This scarlet robe looks ridiculous on me! Take it away and find something more suitable."

The man whom he was addressing, an aide from the city government, looked appropriately abashed as he took a hold of the scarlet robe that the Prefect dumped into his outstretched hands.

"As my lord commands, but," the man hesitated for a moment "this was a gift from the Count of the Sacred Bounty himself."

"Well that settles it." answered the Prefect. "Take it away, and burn it."

Tokaray could not help but smile at that. "Wardrobe malfunction?" he genially enquired, stepping into the space vacated by the hurriedly departing functionary.

Audun Joel turned to Tokaray to respond to him, after having fumed at one of his servants and breathed deeply.

"You know, you would think that they care about their jobs or something," said Audun Joel. "Those scratchy, awful robes reflect the tastes of the gifter too well. What rags, huh?"

The Kaiser and his procession had paused at the junction of Lawyers Lane with the Nobles' Avenue. The day was proceeding beautifully. The lawyers, led by the representatives of the guild of the Mango Bar, had processed out to meet the Kaiser and as he'd ridden into view atop his white horse they had, as one, bended the knee and doffed their caps. Another, strategically placed, choir and orchestra had struck up.

The Kaiser, like any sensible human being, despised lawyers of course. A curse upon humanity, with their money grubbing, logic chopping and process spinning ways. Yet they were a necessary evil, so the Kaiser smiled warmly upon them as he dismounted from his horse and bid the prostrate guild members to rise up. Warmly, he embraced them one by one. The sentinel who walked along side him was whispering the name of each member of the Mango Bar as the Kaiser approached them so that he could address them by name, as though he were familiar with each and every one of them.

The day was running faultlessly, and the security arrangements thus far had been impeccable. Acting Squadron Leader Rhydian Fithen had been meticulous in his planning of the operation and the Kaiser was minded to make the promotion a permanent one, the moment that he reached Raynor's Keep.

If Tokaray had wondered why he had been removed from the security committee planning for this triumphal day, he was about to find out. Dominus had been able to use the leverage afforded by generous ESB sponsorship to arrange a meeting with the editor of the Daily Mail and Telegraph of Eliria during the state visit of Elwynn. The transcript and audio were a gift given courtesy of SHINE, whom the Kaiser had quietly reactivated so that he could be assured of an answer to the age old question of 'who watches the watchers'. Doubtless either Tokaray or Adam soon be aware that their psychotic ramblings had found their way out into the public domain, and when that happened they would be finished. By the time that the Kaiser would arrive before the Golden Gate, those two wretched villains would already suspect that their executions, at the Kaiser's own hand, would be the long awaited entertainment promised to the masses.

As Thorgils finished bear-hugging the last miserly parasite of a lawyer, he turned to address the crowd, declaring in a loud voice that the rule of law was the bedrock of the Imperial Republic and that all those who subverted it would face a just and ever lasting punishment. That got a cheer of course, but not as great a cheer as when he announced that a fund of 40 million Erb would be established, half from his own personal fortune and half from a matching contribution out of the Sacred Treasury of the Imperial Republic, for the building of new Inns of Court for the Mango Bar.

With that, he remounted his horse and gave the signal to ride on.

By the Golden Gate to the Keep, the Lords and Ladies Elector of the Landsraad stood standing, waiting to welcome the Kaiser back to his seat of government.

Adam thought the whole thing was tedious and demeaning. Why should he have to stand there among some lesser nobles? Granted, Kyle Kylinn had just married Adam’s cousin, who suddenly now was Empress of Natopia, but what the hell about those obscure Froyalanish women? Sure, they were not obscure in terms of looks. Blond, tall and with big boobs. They had nice boobs, Adam, thought, and positioned his face so he could gaze more at them.

He felt a nudge in his side. “Eyes up, you little twat”. It was Tokaray whispering to him.

“What? I didn’t do anything.”

“Yeah, yeah. Just look noble now. Shoulders back, chest up, chin up. I’ll get you a whore later tonight.”

“What! I didn’t do anything!”

“Just stand still and shut up. The Kaiser’s soon here. Remember, eyes up, chest up, chin up. Shoulders back.”

Adam felt the anger in him rising. Why did Tokaray always have to be such a mean idiot him? He hated Tokaray. Maybe he should kill him right there, right now… Adam touched the little army knife that he kept in his pocket. All it would take was one little stab, and his father’s annoying failed murderer would be dead. He had always tried resenting Tokaray for trying to kill Nathaniel, but after listening to endless stories from his mother, stepfather, uncle – in fact his entire extended family – about his father, he knew he would probably have wanted to kill his own father too. It ought to be forgiven, but not the old khan’s behaviour.

Killing Tokaray could wait, Adam thought. In an effort to distract himself from his anger, Adam checked his Elwnet tablet (which was in his jacket pocket). He quickly skimmed the news, and he came across a tabloid article in the Daily Mail & Telegraph.

Adam’s face turned pale.

He nudged Tokaray’s side.

“What?”

“We’re in trouble,” whispered Adam, and showed Tokaray the tablet. “We have to leave right now. We’re dead. We’re so dead.”

Tokaray gave Adam a calm expression, but it was evident Tokaray was angered by this. The old khan’s fists were gripped to tightly that to Adam it seemed that blood seeped from the old khan’s nails.

“What we do,” said Tokaray “is wait.”

“But…”

“Just shut up. Chin up. Shoulders back. We wait. If you move, you’re dead.”

Ludovic moved impatiently on his seat. The Kaiser certainly took his time. Ludovic was bored, he hated the fact that he, and all other nobles of the nation, were put in front of the gate and left to wait until the Kaiser saw fit to arrive at the Keep. Like he was some kind of servant. But well, I won't be long now...

He looked around the pavilion. The Minster of the Interior was going on and on about Kezanic hymns and their meaning. It didn't interest Ludovic one bit, but he needed to keep the Minister as a friend, she was his boss after all. He nodded patiently at Mira, who was going on at great length about what she perceived to be modern influences in Kezanic motets. But his gaze quickly drifted away again. Then, somewhat on the side, he suddenly noticed Tokaray Al-Osman and young Adam. They were standing among the electors and lesser nobles. Hah, that would piss them off properly, Ludovic thought. He noticed that Adam was playing with a knife. Almost automatically, Ludovic moved his hand to the side of his tunic, where a small bulge was only slightly visible.

He politely broke off the Minister's lecture and gestured to one of his sentinels. He gave him a small piece of parchment, which the servant brought to the two Khans. They read what he had written, looked at the pavilion and noticed him. Ludovic nodded, and they nodded back. Tokaray wrote something on the back of the parchment and gave it back to the sentinel. He unfolded the small letter and glanced over it. In scribly handwriting it read:

Crypteians ready on strategic positions. Trust CW is on our side. T should be in soon. Good luck.

Very well. The board is ready, the pieces are set, and the game is afoot.

Mira was quite proud of the Kaiser's interest in Kezan. Most Kaisers had been blissfully unaware of its existence or activities. Dominus's predecessor had even appointed a Count to replace her house, mistakenly thinking it to be vacant when spotting it on a strategic map of the realm. This Kaiser, Dominus, was a friend of Kezan and helped bring national attention back to that damp little island that Mira called home. Dominus had even said that he intended to visit Kezan sometime once he had a chance to rest from his globe-girding journey. The Household Agency was already drafting plans on how to receive him.

Mira's eyes scanned the crowd of nobles and notables. Count L. Verion of the Sacred Bounty was speaking with one of the Sentinels. No doubt making sure that everything would be ready when Dominus finished his procession and entered the Keep in glory. There did seem to be quite a number among the crowd dressed in the uniform of the Chamber of the Crypteia.

Mira wondered if the commander of the Crypteia could spare a moment to discuss the rash decisions of one N. Vasilica. Those she could make out were, according to their insignia, of rather meager rank in the order. odd, she thought.

Count L. Verion had made his way closer to Mira again. She leaned over and asked him how long it was to be until they lined up to greet the Kaiser according to rank and precedence. Shortly, he replied. Unhelpful.

The parade had gone on for far longer than the Kaiser had anticipated, but damn it he had been curious to learn just what the PRH and Balgurd a 'Proctology Palace' actually entailed. It was certainly a novel use for an abandoned Safir temple. If only there was a convenient and easy way to unsee certain images.

The Kaiser, wearing the Imperial Army uniform of a Magister, lined with purple and with a purple and gold cape draped over his shoulders, rode on his white horse towards the now visible battlements of the outer-wall of Raynor's Keep. Upon his head he wore a laurel crown, and most curiously of all his face had been painted red in honour of Tempus, the conquering God of War. The captured weapons, armour, gold, silver, statuary, and curious or exotic treasures carried on the processional floats, along with paintings, tableaux, and models depicting significant places and episodes of the Kaiser's voyages would be driven into the Raynortoo Park and there kept as an exhibit to display the power and majesty of the Imperial Republic to its sometimes fractious populace.

Following the delay at the Proctology Palace the spoils and captives of his voyage to Eura led the way; the cheering and flag-waving crowds of veterans, well-wishers and the curious followed behind. The City-Watch and the Order of the Kampioens had kept pace, falling in behind the Kaiser as he passed their position. As he progressed along the last stretch of the Nobles' Avenue, coming up to the curiously named Raynortoo Park, he and his sentinels turned towards the Golden Gate tower and left the procession behind.

Now the Kaiser could see for himself the Lord and Lady Electors of the Landsraad along with his ministers and various commission holders rise from their seats and, to his quiet amusement, begin to jostle amongst themselves to find their correct position in keeping with the order of precedence. The spectabiles, the illustres and the clarissimi, all would have to find their place.

As the Kaiser dismounted, gripping the hilt of the Sword of Vengeance tightly the whole time, the Sentinels of the Blue and White Companies formed up about him. The horse was led away towards Golden Gate while the Kaiser turned to face his assembled lords, who had by now formed into some semblance of order, and gave him the synchronised acclamation that the Imperial Household Agency had spent the last month patiently drilling into them, as though they were school children who needed to be taught by rote.

'Kaiser of Kaisers, the greatest of Kaisers!' (repeated 8 times)
'The Gods gave you to us! May the Gods save You for us!' (repeated 27 times)
'As Kaiser, pious and felicitous, may You rule for many years!' (22 times)
'For the good of the human race, for the good of the Landsraad, for the good of the Imperial Republic, for the good of all!' (24 times)
'Our hope is in You, You are our salvation!' (26 times)
'May it please our Kaiser to live forever!' (22 times)
'May You pacify the world and triumph here in person!' (24 times)

Now it began. The Kaiser unsheathed the Sword of Vengeance, felt its weight and judged its exquisite balance in his hand. Never could mortal hands have devised a blade of such perfection and extraordinary power.

"My Lords! My Ladies! I call upon you all to bear witness to the treason of Tokaray al-Osman, formerly Commissioner of the Cryptiea, and his conspirator the Lord Adam, formerly Magister of the Palatini. Their lives are today forfeit to this blade. I declare all your former bonds and ties of obligation to those two traitors to be at an end. By this day's end their heads shall be mounted above that gate." And he brandished the Sword of Vengeance so as to point out the Golden Gate to the gawping crowd of notables, some of whom were conspicuously trying to edge away from where Tokaray and the young boy Lord Adam were stood.

It was then that the Kaiser noticed that there were far too many black uniforms blended into amongst the crowd, almost as many as the beige uniforms of his own sentinels. This could easily turn into a melee if their numbers cancelled each other out. There was no choice but to call upon the city watch who were acting as a cordon holding back the shocked crowd who now booed and jeered and called down curses on the names of Tokaray and Adam.

"Guardsmen!" The Kaiser cried out, addressing the City Watch, "Remember your oaths, remember the generosity I have shown you. Bring me those two traitors!"

As soon as he saw the bewildered look on the Kaiser's face, Ludovic knew something was up. This wasn't just a normal welcoming ceremony, no, this was different. Thorgils had planned something, the old snake. Ludovic watched tensly as the Kaiser took the Sword of Vengeance and waved it through the air. Somehow it seemed quite out of place, too large and too old-fashioned. The Kaiser's speech alarmed Ludovic even more. Apparently something had gone wrong, and the Kaiser had gotten information on Tokaray and Adam. This didn't go exactly as planned. Still, nothing was lost. He had paid the City Guard good money to assure the success of the coup. Surely they could be relied upon. The compromising pictures of some of the officers had only been a failsafe.

Ludovic stood up from the pavilion and moved slowly to the gate, he had to push through the crowd before he could reach it, just in time to hear the Kaiser call upon the City Guard to arrest the two Khans. Tokaray and Adam were protected by a few Crypteians, but they could easily be defeated by the well-equipped sentinels. It was the Guard that had to tip the balance. So far, they didn't do anything. The Kaiser began to look uncertain, his face had turned pale. "Commander, arrest those traitors!" he shouted, from the top of his lungs. The Commander, Vice-Captain Harwin Turnip, finally saw Ludovic gazing at him. Ludovic nodded, almost in slow motion. Vice-Captain Turnip turned to his men "Guardsmen, to arms!" The men of the City Guards took their carabines, loaded and... pointed them directly at the first group of sentinels. The sound of the fifty guns fired at once couldn't have been louder. A large number of sentinels fell to the ground, bloodied, wounded, dead.

The Kaiser didn't seem to grasp what had happened. Slowly, the realisation became visible on his face. He had been betrayed. The City Guard had abandoned the Kaiser. A coup was going on, and it was Kaiser Dominus who was on the receiving end of it. Around him, the sentinels scrambled together, and fired back. The Crypteians had sealed off the entry to the gate, ensuring that support would be delayed. The Guardsmen and the sentinels were in a bloody gunfight. Here and there, bullets found their way into the pavilion, wounding some of the nobles of the Imperial Republic. Ludovic watched intensely. Remarkable, how close this fight was to what he had imagined it to be. It was an uneven fight, the Guardsmen outnumbered the sentinels three to one. Soon, it would be over.

Ludovic ran over to the Kaiser who still stood on the same spot. He was fulminating with incoherent rage and charging around him with the Sword of Vengeance. It seemed like he didn't see what was happening around him. Both senteniels and Guardsmen were a target for this man, who had just witnessed the worst moment in his entire life. Ludovic took the Kaiser by the arm, dodging the sword blows, and pulled him away from the fight. He felt a bullet grazing his arm while he was doing it. But no time to be afraid now. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. The Kaiser looked at him and mumbled "Ludovic... Gods... they betrayed me. Kill them all Ludovic, kill them all!" They ran towards the gate building. Ludovic kicked a wooden side-door open and took the Kaiser inside. The Captain of the sentinels, who had followed the Kaiser immediately, entered after them. Ludovic turned to the man and said "I will bring the Kaiser to safety, go out there, and win this bloody thing. Make sure that the nobles are safe!" The captain turned away and went outside, back to the battle.

The Kaiser, meanwhile, had recovered a little. He kept fulminating against the traiters, threatening them with all kinds of innovative punishments. Ludovic moved towards him, silently. He looked at the Kaiser. For once, he didn't hide his contempt, his hatred. It was not only that this Kaiser had been a degenerate and a drunk, it was much worse than that. Kaiser Dominus was a Verion, a cousin. And he had dishonoured the family name. He had named the sworn enemies of the Verions into his cabinet, instead of burning them to death on the stake. He was a weak man, Ludovic thought, a real politician. When Dominus saw the look in Ludovic's eyes, he realised the mistake he had made. He tried to move away, but Ludovic held his arm. And with one flick of his hand, Ludovic took a small, but sharp knife from his belt, and put it against the Kaiser's throat.

"Well... Thorgils... seems like you couldn't trust me after all. You can come with me now..."

The melodic sounds of a city undergoing a sudden change in administration

A fierce fire-fight was raging as Tokaray and Adam crawled towards the sally-port into which Ludovic had led the Kaiser. Tokaray had been quietly impressed, moments earlier Thorgils had been in the grip of a battle-frenzy that had been terrible to behold, hacking savagely at the City-Watchmen who were so foolhardy as to attempt to approach him. It had taken some courage for Ludovic to edge towards that maniac, the bullets ricocheting about him as he went, and to coax him into retiring from the murderous affray.

Aside from the Kaiser's guard and the sentinels assigned to the various notables of the Imperial Republic, now mostly sprawled dead amongst the stands and seating, there were an additional 120 Sentinels stationed between the Mahamantot Bunker and the Golden Gate. These had immediately sprung into the attack in a desperate attempt to rescue the Kaiser and the other nobles caught in the cross-wire, many of whom were also on the ground, either groaning in agony or motionless, patterns of crimson spreading over their purple togas and state robes. Some the Crypteia had managed to corral into a corner underneath the shade of an angle bastion where they could be relatively safe. Others, Tokaray noted with regret, had managed to discard their robes and were fleeing into Raynortoo Park.

One advantage of the meticulous plan drawn up by that meddling Squadron Leader, which had caused Tokaray such consternation when he first saw it, was that it had denuded Raynor's Keep of many of its sentinels, leaving it wide open to his own forces. Now, if he could just get inside himself...

A sentinel, sabre drawn, with a look of murderous fury written large across his face, loomed up before him. Tokaray could feel Adam, beside him, cringing back in terror. With a snort of contempt Tokaray un-holstered his C96 and loosed off four rounds which sent the sentinel crumpling to the floor, clutching at the shattered ruins of his jaw.

A gaggle of City Watchmen had clustered around the Sally Port and were exchanging shots with the advancing sentinels. To Tokaray's great relief he saw that Ludovic had secured the chamber on the other side of the small wooden door. His delight increased when he saw the haunched, defeated looking form of Thorgils, huddled in a corner of the room.

Briskly Tokaray stepped inside and motioned to the two Crypteia operatives who stood guard over the Kaiser to haul him onto his feet.

"You worthless creature.", Tokaray snarled as he threw a punch that drove hard against Thorgils' gut, and he smiled with satisfaction at the Kaiser's muffled oouf of pain and the subtle cracking sound of a rib-bone being broken.

"I should kill you on the spot. Yet, I've decided upon an altogether more fitting ending to your caste-shamed existence. Come Ludovic, you will find this quite informative. Adam, take control of the operations centre and contact our outside partners. This will all be for nothing if the Kampioens are able to blast their way in."

A troop of Kampioens marched double-time through Raynortoo Park against the flow of fleeing civilians. Someone shouted to take cover, but they failed to scatter in time before a grenade tore through them, followed by a hailstorm of gunfire. A fraction of them managed to recompose themselves, taking cover behind one of Kaiser Dominus's treasure floats and began return fire. One of the Kampioens saw something in the corner of his eye. He turned to see one of the nobles, aimlessly walking through the park, drifting in the northeastern direction. Before he could identify and get them to safety, a bullet hit its target and tore through his head.

The noblewoman's leather boots dragged along the asphalt. One step. Another step. Left. Right.

The noise began to fade as she made her way further north and away from the Keep.

Mira wasn't entirely sure how she got to the Ministry of the Interior. The building was on lockdown, with security meeting her at the gate. A number of people had run into the facility for cover when the shooting started. One of the guards struggled to pry a pistol out of Mira's hand. It wasn't hers and it looked like it had been freshly emptied. There was blood on her, but it wasn't clear whose.

"The Kaiser is safe in the Keep." She said, not really to anyone in particular. She stared through her staff. "Trust Kampioens. Don't trust the City Watch. Kill anyone from the Crypteia."

Mira shuffled her feet further into the compound. None of her Sentinels were there.

As the mess of the outfest unfolds Ryhdian is at headquarters responding to all of this. He is aware of the issue and is calling all Air and Troops in the area to fall in to Shirekeep and fright the rebels.
" Sir, The rebels have taken the Kaiser, They say that he is safe and being taken care of."
"Thats a lie, Where the hell are my jets"
" They just called in asking for targets sir, but their not sure who to listen to"
" tell them that they need to listen to who ever talks to them with the call sign Golden Crown"
" Now, where are all my soldiers and how many do we still have."
" We don't know sire all we know is we have about half of our troops just outside of the gates"
" you tell the jets to shoot down that door and tell the soldiers to get connections with the other missing troops."
"Now will someone tell me how the hell this mess happened"
The room was quit and no one answered in the meanwhile the jets where preparing to shoot down the gates. Ryhdian is now aware that he has the one navy ship ready for action.
"Sir the tanks are just outside of the Golden gate. They are waiting for orders."
"tell them to go in first once the door down and don't shoot anyone who is not wearing a black uniforms. From what I'm told those are the rebels"
"Sir navy ship is ready just outside the wall, They want permission to shoot down the wall and open a clear path for the soldiers"
"NO NO NO, tell them to stand by and wait for orders we don't know where the Kaiser is. Status report on the Jets."
" Waiting for orders sir"
" tell them to take the shot on the Golden Gate NOW"
The jets line up for the shot and together take down the gate and open up a path for the soldiers. Not knowing where the kaiser is all they do is kill the black uniforms, They are out numbered but with the help of the tanks they are able to put up a good fight
"Sir we just got word of the North Company they are heading towards the fight and are going to engage."
" No tell them to go the river where the ship is at and wait for them ti give a path through."
" Can I get communications with whats going on inside"
" Yes here you go"
" Private do you see the kaiser"
"Negative but there is a only one building that he could be in and that is Inner Keep"
" Do you see a wall that has nothing by it"
" YA the wall west of Inner "
" Tell the ship to fire on that wall as soon as the troops arrive"
" Sir we have lost communications with the ship"
" Lets just hope they got the Message"
With battle raging at Raynors Keep, Ryhdian can only wait to hear back from the soldiers of what is going on inside the walls. Ryhdian is now praying to god to forgive him for he has failed the Kaiser and the Imperial Republic.

(Thanks Ryhdian, good post. Now I'll just add an interpretative gloss of my own to the current situation:
  • The naval vessel is a landing craft of the Riverine Army's Classis Rubrum (Red Fleet), so technically the Imperial Army still even though it is a somewhat atypical element that concerns itself with things that float.
  • Ryhdian has ordered the two F9 fighters orbiting the city to take out the Golden Gate Tower with two Brimstone missiles, a risky shot considering that the Kaiser was held in there until moments earlier. This demolished the front section of the gate, making it entirely possible that the structural integrity of the tower has been fundamentally compromised and that it may collapse.
  • Ryhdian has issued the watchword "Golden Crown" so that loyalist forces will be able to distinguish his orders from any misleading counter-orders that the rebels may seek to issue.
  • The Order of the Sentinels suffered heavy casualties in the initial betrayal by the City Guard and the fire-fight with the Crypteia, removing them as a fighting force for the moment.
  • Several Troops (companies) of the Order of Kampioens have hurriedly converged on Raynor's Keep, although they have suffered heavily from the attention of Crypteia snipers on the battlements of the outer keep.
  • The confusion over the identity of the coup plotters means that while the loyalists have received the order to kill members of the Crypteia on sight, many were not aware of the treachery of the City Guard until it was too late - causing many further casualties.
  • Nonetheless, an 8 man scouting party, transported by a Horjin Armoured Fighting Vehicle of the Apollonian Legion (the 347th Apollonian Guards Regiment, if you want to be overly pedantic) has reached the shattered ruins of the Golden Gate Tower and were unable to locate the Kaiser.
  • Expect the Crypteia and the City Guard to recover from the shock of the air strike and to counter-attack, hard, against the Kampioens trying to advance towards the Inner Keep.
If this all sounds fair we'll continue on this basis. :up1: )

I thought it would be as well to map out where the Putschist units currently are, while I focus on rattling off the Kaiser's death-scene. I'll update this to include the Loyalist Forces, particularly the Kampioens trying to batter their way into the Golden Gate Tower and the Elwynnese evacuation attempt, later after I've had a quick re-read of the thread.

Oustfest was usually a sore day for the Lodge of Mischievous Intent. The Lodge had often been the last resting place of formerly significant people, usually after several months of dutiful and diligent labour and a few swollen Imperial paychecks which caused them to see the value of luxury above trifling concerns such as service. So when the annual day came for their names to be struck off the Imperial list; for their honours to be recalled for recirculation; for their employments to be terminated; for their lands to be seized; for their enfeoffments to be de-enfeoffed; for their children to be drowned; for their bakeries to be shut down; for their organs to be claimed for Imperial service; for their ancient crowns to be broken and titles disestablished, it was a sorry occasion. And sorry occasions were met with sombre feasting and reflective alcoholic indulgence in the hallowed halls of the New Lodge.

Major Ronnie Geddon had had word from an old friend of the Lodge that this Oustfest would be particularly bloody, and had ordered the Michievy Militant to be on watch for any disturbances between Retribution Park and Raynor Park. Suddenly, guns, commotion, explosions, and Shirekeep was back on form. Geddon had been waiting centuries for this. From a bunker deep underneath the Market Street complex, he began coordinating according to masterplans and military set pieces that had been pored over and refined for many decades. As the idle rich members (whose subscriptions paid for all the military hardware, as well as their wine and dinners) reveled in demonwood-paneled rooms in the civilian wings, anti-air systems went online, troops assumed battle stations across the complex, and a telegraph message was broadcast on all Imperial military frequencies.

At the Imperial Alexandrian Embassy, it had been an otherwise normal day. Most of the staff were on leave, it being a holiday.

There being no ambassador, the defense attache, a colonel, was the charge d' affaires, and he had been obligated to attend with the rest of the diplomatic corps at the diplomatic gallery, clad in full dress uniform, and accompanied by his military aide, a lieutenant of the Grand Army of the Empire, and the sunglassed and suit-clad bodyguards of the Imperial Secret Service.

As soon as the violence erupted, the colonel was manhandled away from the scene, carried into the embassy limousine, and whisked away to the Imperial Alexandrian Embassy with its escort vehicles - or tried to, with all the firing taking place. The purple flags with the coat-of-arms of the Empire were not built to withstand bullets, even though the vehicle was armored.

At the embassy, a persistent red visual alarm with its accompanying irritating wail was soon activated, and at first there was the thought that this was an odd time for a drill - except that the embassy security running all over the place was proof positive that this was no drill. The top floors were soon evacuated, save for the snipers on the roof, who now stood in full profile and with binoculars, reporting to the command center each development that they could see, which was soon dispatched to Geneva via secure diplomatic cable and direct phone calls to the Office of the Third Consul.

Consular officers informed members of the Alexandrian expatriate community to shelter in place, and to await further developments.

The mess of the Oustfest got to Audun Joel quickly. Seeing the dreaded Blackstoners push for the coup, with the support of many in the City Guard and the Imperial Constabulary was a step too far. The violence and the destruction now unleashed in the very city he had been trying to rebuild patiently were putting his life’s work in jeopardy.

There was no time left to waste. Shirekeep needed saving. The Kaiser needed saving.

As the firefight unleashed, Audun Joel and his servants fought their way out of the crowd and made it to the Prefectoral Palace.

“What’s the status of the City Watch? The Constabulary? What the hell is going on out there!” yelled the Prefect.

“Your Grace, there’s no clear information right now, we only know that many in the City Guard and the Imperial Constabulary were bribed to join different sides… we don’t have any information past that right now,” said one of the aides. “Your sister has begun evacuating the Landsraad; they will need help with that.”

As the firefight broke out, the servants and aides at the Palace began packing up the archives, papers, and effects of the offices there.

“Make sure the archives, and important papers are properly stored and protected,” Audun Joel ordered. “And where’s that secure link to Araxion? Get me Araxion on the phone right now.”

Aides rushed to and fro around the Prefect’s Palace. One brought a secured line to the Prefect to Araxion. The Prefect retired to a private room to speak to his military adviser in Araxion.

“Aqamir Axilya Rowarin, there’s a serious situation in the capital, there is a coup going on and the whole city is going down to shit. Fjorlief is evacuating the Landsraad, and the coup plotters have the Kaiser. We need to reestablish safety and order in the city and provide backup to the Landsraad evacuation. If we get to slaughter Iron Company soldiers in the way – the more, the better,” said Audun Joel. “Get me some support in here, Commander Rowarin. Now.”

“Yes, Your Highness. Support will be arriving in 4 hours.”

“4 hours? Aqamir Rowarin, make it quick. The city's descending into chaos.”

“Your Highness, we will try to make it quick, but this is the soonest we can.”

Audun Joel hung up the phone.

“I’ll be damned if this city is going to burn to the ground without me doing something about it.”

SUMMARY: Audun Joel, Prefect of Shirekeep, knowing that he could not count on the City Guard or the Imperial Constabulary to do their jobs, calls for military support from the County of Araxion to restore order to the city and help the Landsraad evacuation.

Thorgils was dragged along by two Crypteia guardsman along dank brick corridors and rock-hewed passages of whose existence he had been hitherto entirely ignorant. Ahead of him, in the flickering light of lines of electric arc lamps walked the shave pate of Tokaray, listening intently as that weasel Ludovic talked animatedly alongside him whilst trying to keep in step with the former's brisk pace.

Of all the treachery he had experienced that day, Ludovic's had been the most galling. That he was ambitious, and greedy, and even spiteful, this was well known, but what Thorgils had not suspected until today was the depth of his hatred and for how little the ties of kinship and past acquaintance counted for with him.

A dull thud reverberated somewhere off in the distance. The corridor shook and dust, dirt and shards of brick fell from the ceiling, giving Ludovic pause. Tokaray carried on regardless but Thorgils was able to grimace briefly at his betrayer's evident discomfort.

'You weren't expecting it to go like this, were you?'

The thought consoled him somewhat. If it was too late for him, and he suspected by now that it probably was, it was certainly too late for them. Sooner or later they would be dealt with in the same fashion as they had saw fit to deal with others.

'May your agonies be protracted and excruciating.' The Kaiser wished fervently for them both. Up ahead Tokaray and Ludovic had come to a halt. As Thorgils and his guards came up to where they stood, he could see that they had reached the end of the corridor, bare rock - perhaps limestone, although it seemed to be shot through with seams of silver-grey and black veins that Thorgils, admittedly ignorant of matters of geology, had never seen before. To their left was a steel door with a glass peephole, about five inches in diameter, set into it.

"You'll have never seen this part of the Keep before." Tokaray said, turning towards his prisoner. "It was uncovered while you were away contracting every imaginable venereal disease from those whore Greeklings in Vey." So this was the Chamber of Mur then. The Kaiser was no expert but stainless steel doors were a little too modern for the 2nd Era.

"Of course, I appreciated the significance of the discovery as soon as it was uncovered." Tokaray crowed, to Ludovic this time. "That artefact, the crude head of a so-called demon-fish. It was a clue that the ancient Kaiser's once had a weapon of very great power housed beneath this fortress. But it wasn't until I heard what those damned fools on Kezan were up to that I realised there was a way of bringing it back. After all, we have good intel that the necrotic vermin are working on a similar device, and we can't allow them to have an unmatched advantage in the coming war between the living and the dead."

"That's your hobby horse, old man." Ludovic sounded underwhelmed. "And yours is the Storrish infestation in Elwynn." Tokaray snapped back at the impertinent youth. "I assure you, this will be an equally efficacious solution to both our problems. Bring the prisoner here." The last remark was to Thorgils guards. The Crypteia stooges dragged Thorgils forcefully by his tightly gripped arms towards the door. The Kaiser could see now that there was a keypad embedded in a panel beside the door. From the tiny peephole, the interior of what laid beyond the door appeared to be a room lined with ceramic panel tiles and flooded with white light. Not what Thorgils' would have deemed an archaeological site.

"Been redecorating?" He enquired in a resigned tone of voice. Ludovic merely scoffed in contempt as a reply. Tokaray on the other hand smiled genially, and as always his smiles were more disturbing than his scowls. "Don't think trying to be witty will save you. You're too far gone for that." Ludovic's face was contorted with disgust. "Witty? That? Couldn't be if it tried. Just a pathetic bloated old drunk." Thorgils turned on Ludovic, snarling in fury, only the firm grip of this guards holding him back, which didn't prevent him form flinging a globule of phlegm and spittle that landed with a satisfying splat on Ludovic's face. "This bloated old drunk almost had the drop on you, damned pup. I didn't see you coming, but I saw those two. Oh, yes. I know those two, the psychotic child and the monster. Allying with them? Are you out of your mind. The two most likely to unite the world against themselves? I gave you a chance, but now you'll just be hung along side them."

Ludovic just laughed. "See, even at the end, this damned fool won't stop babbling. Just a rambling old degenerate." As he spoke he produced a delicate silken handkerchief from somewhere and dabbed the dripping spit from his face, which was incidentally a picture of measured disdain.

"Enough with this foolishness." Tokaray snapped before he spoke to the men holding the Kaiser. "When the light turns green the door will slide back. You have six seconds exactly in which to throw him in." Having addressed the guards he then turned back to Ludovic. "Once he's inside you'll want to watch through the viewing hole. It'll be recorded of course, but there is nothing quite like seeing it up close for the first time."

In the midst of the chaos, Adam realized that he had to do something to protect his life. Tokaray and Ludovic were on a suicide mission. He ran down the street, and saw a teenager, a little older than him walking hurriedly but confused away from the action. A thought came to Adam's head. If he looked like that teenager, with subculture clothes, with no indication of richness and nobility, he could easily pass through Shirekeep unnoticed and keep him safe. The kid looked like he was about the same height as Adam.

Adam ran towards the kid. "Hey you!"

"Yeah?" the boy kid as he turned around. Upon seeing Adam in his clothes of nobility, the boy changed his attitude. "My Lord, how can I help you?"

"Take your clothes off," Adam ordered.

"What? No, get away from me. I have a girlfriend."

"I don't care. Get naked." Adam pulled out his knife. "Get naked or you die."

The other kid was starting to panic, and quickly took off his clothes, leaving only his underwear on.

"What the fuck don't you understand with naked?" Adam asked, and pointed the knife in the face of the kid.

"Please don't rape me...."

"Fuck no. I have standards, you know. I can do much better than you. Give me your bag too, and then piss off from here. The Gods will be grateful for your service to a man of nobility. They won't forget it. Now get the hell away from me you dirty pleb."

Adam took the kid's bag, shoved his clothes into it, and dressed himself in the kid's clothes. He didn't care about the kid's underwear, he just wanted to humiliate him.

Once dressed in the other kid's clothes, Adam felt strangely human. He felt like he could be anyone now. It was liberating, and scary at the same time. With the bag on his back, he walked in normal speed across Shirekeep, away from the fighting.

On the other side of Shirekeep, he knew that a friend of his mother lived, Liv Djupvik. She had always been very fond of Adam's brother Aldin, being in awe of his kindness and goodness. If he could convince Liv that he was Aldin, then for a while, he would be protected. He just needed to keep her away from Elwnet, news and other communications.

It began raining heavily.

Adam walked, and walked, and in the end, he found the street where Liv lived. Hopefully she would be home. It was after all a public holiday, and the warning in the city had been sounded, so people would not be out and about.

He rang the door bell. Once it opened, Adam was in full Aldin mode.

"Thank Bous you opened! Please, Liv, can I come in? It's so frightfully scary out there, there's a war. Please, help me, I am so scared..."

"Oh my darling, of course. Come in Aldin, I'll get you some dry clothes, and you can stay here as long as you need."

Adam needed to make sure that Liv never left his presence, in case she would contact any one. So for the next hour, they were just sitting in the kitchen, chatting to one another happily. Luckily for Adam, communications were down, so there was no way she could get any news, or call his mother.

Liv may be rich, but she was not rich enough to have any permanent in-house staff, so it was only the two of them in the flat. It wasn't even that big, which was good for Adam. Liv was grandchild to Arviður, an old man, former Baron of K'Tzuni, whose sister's kid married Daniel Kalirion. So he and Liv were not only friends, but related somewhat distantly.

In any case, he was actually a bit scared he might be killed tonight, so being at Liv's was some security. But faking being Aldin, hiding away from the Kaiser's people, it was all so stressful. He needed a distraction. He had a sudden flashback from the kid earlier in the day, "Don't rape me" the kid had begged him.

Ah! Sex would be a great distraction. This could be fun. He could enjoy Liv's body. Sure, she was a bit older than him, but she was kind of beautiful, and she would be a good last shag, if the world was so sad it would come to that she would be his last...

"Are you a believer?" asked Adam out of the blue.

"Aldin, what do you mean?"

"Do you believe in the uncorrupted word of Bous?"

"Aldin, you know I'm not a Bovic follower. But I respect your faith, and your role as Pentheros. Millions of people listen to you."

"Yeah, they do. But I am worried about you, about your soul, Liv. What if we die tonight? Maybe the fighting will come our way? The looting?"

"Hey, kiddo, don't worry... We'll be safe here. I'll protect you, honey."

"Thanks, Liv... You are so kind to me."

"Your mother and I have been friends for many years. You're basically a brother to me, Aldin"

"You're more than a sister to me, Liv," said Adam. "You're very beautiful. I've always loved you. More than I should."

"Aldin, you're just confused... maybe you should go for a lie-down? It's been a rough day, you need to rest. You've seen awful things. People your age shouldn't see that."

"I know, I'm scared. I don't wanna die like this. I know I have to be strong outwardly. You know how evil Adam is, what responsibilities I have... "

"Oh damn, Adam, yeah. There are no words. I was shocked to read about Arn and Rostam, that Adam, you know..."

"He fucking killed them! My brothers! He killed my brothers!"

Adam started sobbing heavily, and stood up, about to leave the table. Liv hurried next to him, gave him a big hug, and held him for a while.

Adam looked up, smiled at Liv, and gave her a quick kiss on her cheak.

"May I kiss you on the lips a little...?" asked Adam. "I've never kissed anyone, and I would very much like to kiss someone before I die, and what if I die tonight, that would be horrible. Please... I am so scared."

"Ssshhhh..." said Liv, and held him tighter. "I shouldn't kiss you, you're just a kid, but I can hug you for as long as you need."

"But I need a kiss... No one has to know."

In the end, Liv gave in, and Adam and Liv kissed. Adam hated kissing. Usually he just had his prostitutes come into his room, and he could boss them about however he wanted. There was a large element of fun in trying to get Liv into bed with him. What if he could trick her into having sex with him? No force, simply, have that bitch have sex with him willingly. That would piss Aldin off so much, thought Adam, and laughed to himself.

He tried prolonging the kissing, but she pushed him off. Adam immediately took off his shirt, and ran into Liv's arms.

"Aldin, please... this isn't right."

"I know you want me, Liv... this may be our last night in existence. Let's make love."

"Aldin, no. You're a kid."

"Am I so ugly?"

"You're not ugly, Aldin, you're beautiful. But I cannot have sex with you."

"Oh, you're worried I'm not developed? I have pubes, look! I'm a man!" and Adam took off all his clothes.

"Please, put your clothes back on."

"No. I want you. Let me have you. Let me make love to you. No one needs to know. I'll make it good for you. You know you want me to..."

Adam walked up to Liv, and pulled her dress off.

"Aldin... please..." By now, Liv looked extremely uncomfortable.

"Shhh.... no one needs to know..."

"You're not being yourself, Aldin. Please, just stop."

"No, baby... I am going to give you want you want. I'll be your toyboy. I'll make you happy. Come on, trust me, baby."

Liv tried to push Adam away, but even for a 14 year old, he was too strong for her.

"Oh you like it rough, baby?"

And with that, he forced himself upon her, muffled her screams with his hands, and raped her and until he was satisfied.

When he was done, he simply said "thanks baby, you've taken my virginity. Bous will be pleased with you," and smiled.

The terrified woman was shivering and couldn't say anything.

"Shhh, baby... it's okay. You made Bous happy. You made happy."

This was a fun evening, Adam thought. But he needed her under control until everything had calmed down. So he decided on tying her up in a chair, with her mouth gagged with a sock and some tape, until he wanted another go at her.
