A Beginner's Guide to Micran Metaphysics

Post by Andreas the Wise »

This is largely a summary of a larger essay, for easy reference use.

Originally, there were a number of separate worlds, the most prominent three being Gralus, Fnord and Micras.
On Micras lived the Microns, and thus Time Distortionists.
On Fnord lived the Shirithians, much of the Apollo sector, and thus the Time Revisionists.
On Gralus lived the pre-Novatainian/Tokians, and thus St Nova.

On each world, a major catastrophe happened that ripped the world apart.
Micras was pulled apart by the Eve of Destruction, and the dimensional transfers that went on at that time – 1 AD in their reckoning.
Fnord had been ripped apart by the first mighty B00/\/\ist explosions around b4800.
Gralus was ripped by the (first) Magic Mirror experiment of the Etruri - 702 AT - into three pieces, - two worlds whole; the third the remains of the northern continent. It was this northern continent that our attention focusses on.

These three worlds, then - Gralus, Fnord and Micras, and other little bits lieing around the multiverse, were patched together by a collection of concerned individuals who were, conveniently, outside time and space when the destruction occurred.
It included the Time Distortionists, several of the Cedrist gods, and a number of Demons, led by an Arrtu.

The result was "Micras" as we know it today, but it was not perfectly recreated. Time still flowed differently in the different regions - slowest in the ASC dating of old Fnord; medium speed in Gralus; fastest in old Micras. And the timezone at any given point of the world could change, ebbing and flowing with the powers of those old groupings on the new combined world. And with the timezones comes all the dimensional baggage of the world - gods, universe, afterlife, magic.

It is hypothesised, though hasn't been clearly tested, that if one sent a spaceship off from Gralus, and another from Shireroth, and pointed them at the same star, they'd never reach it - because they'd end up in different universes attached to their original worlds. Where this is most obvious is in the place of bindings.

On Fnord, soon after this conglomeration of worlds, came the great Binding of Time, by Sakat and the Time Distortionists. Key time crystals are in place around Kildare, which enforce regional timelines. That is - if you are of Gralan origin, try as you might, you can't travel back in time in Fnord or old Micras areas and enter their timeline. You can only enter your own. The same for each of the others. So Time Distortionists cannot mess with the Gralan timeline and remove the existence of their Lords of Magic, for example. This means some semblance of normality exists on the world.

On old Micras, dimensional instability caused it to separate into seven different but (for their landmasses) similiar worlds. Travel between these worlds was bound by the Fate Crystals, like the Windsong, and while that binding stays in place, people cannot travel to the split-offs from old Micras.

And on Gralus, long before this had occured, there was the Binding of the Ways. The Gralan universe was full of multi-dimensional links - these were bound and limited, and without the Keeper of the Keys, cannot be accessed by anyone.
Later, their came the binding of the magics, under SCM, which enforced one magical system across the whole world. This was later lifted under NCM, but traces of resentment against it remain.

So, for expeditions, just remember:
Dealing with Cedrist deities, Time Distortionists, Time Revisionists, Dark Microns etc - non-NCM magical powers will be stronger in their own timezone/regions.
People from other timezones cannot go back in time in specifically Gralan areas and change our timeline. (or their own)
People cannot travel between different world from the old Micran worlds.
People cannot travel between different dimensions from the Gralan worlds without the Keeper of the Keys (Andreas).
And there are always those who wish the world hadn't been bound and would like their version of the world back.

The character Andreas the Wise is on indefinite leave. But he does deserve a cool war ribbon.

Duke Mel'Kat - Air Pirate, Melangian, and Duke of the Flying Duchy of Glanurchy
