Research into the Proto-Cosiman language

Post by Malliki »

The top linguists of the Linguistic Institute of Sanilla are currently working to try to reconstruct the Proto-Cosiman language, the ancestral language of the Cosiman language family. This is very much a work in progress, and findings may change during the course of the work. As with any language reconstruction, the findings are mostly theoretical since no one actually knows what Proto-Cosiman sounded like. It is a theoretical language. The bulk of the initial research is in the area of phonology and morphology.

Proto-Cosiman Phonology

Proto-Cosiman had a rather peculiar sound system, with series of aspirated and palatalised consonants, as well as contrasting series of unvoiced nasal consonants, which are very rare. Despite the series of palatalised consonants, the language did not have a separate voiced palatal approximant, /j/. The language also had only one phonemic sibilant, /s/, with several allophones depending on the phonological environment.

(Once you have phonology done, I could help come up with roots.)
