After the collapse of The Independent Realm of Ergonia about 16 years ago, their power generation and molecular defense shield technology lost proper supervision. A key component of these technologies, called the quantum battery, a source of nearly endless energy for various purposes, quickly became a target of foreign interest. One reason is that a quantum battery can supply an entire province's energy needs for weeks. Another is that it can power submarines and aircraft as well as defense shields made of pure energy. In short, a quantum battery has almost miraculous capabilities.

To the benefit of the people of Micras, the Apollonian Union has tried to keep the quantum battery out of the hands of terrorists, who might use this powerful technology for destructive purposes. Just recently a quantum battery was handed over to the Apollonian Union by one Taurus Zeene, a courier working on behalf of a former leader of Ergonia, Thadeus Laing. This is just one of many such quantum batteries rescued by the Apollonians from almost certain misuse.

Some of the stranger stories related to Apollonia's search for quantum batteries: there was a quantum battery found in a suitcase handcuffed to a woman in a house of ill repute in Newstadt, Flanders; quantum batteries hidden in the garage of a suburban household in New Guul, Hamland; a whole truckload of quantum batteries found in a warehouse outside the abandoned Fort Leuca, in the Former Ergonia, covered in maple syrup. It is believed that all or most, except perhaps one or two, of the quantum batteries have been accounted for, and are now safely within Apollonian territory.

There is now a push to reuse the quantum batteries and, moreover, make more quantum batteries for Apollonia to use. They would be used primarily for power generation, especially now that geopolitical rival such as Shireroth is using something they call "Deep Energy" which may be capable of similar levels of output, according to some unconfirmed reports. Accordingly, in collaboration with officials of the USSO Policon and Apollonian government, Thadeus Laing will be working on research under the oversight of Apollonian scientists who were already approaching Ergonia's level of scientific development on quantum technology. According to Laing, "Ex-Ergonians have been enlisted for their assistance. Moreover, research and cooperation on the use of quantum battery for power generation may be expanded to other USSO member nations besides Apollonia as well. This is only the beginning."

Continued Laing, "We are confident that in a short amount of time Apollonian State Utilities will reach its goal of producing at least 15 gigawatts in Quantum Battery based facilities by the end of 6450 ASC. Construction will commence on the facilities immediately and updates will be provided concurrently throughout the news media."
