The National Republican Party of Norfolk, also known as National Republican Party (NRP), is a conservative party. It was formed in preparation of the first democratic general elections in the Jingdaoese Empire. Its ideology is Norfolkian nationalism, economics and maritime supremacy.
The party is a proponent of a limited autonomy of the several dependent States and strong cooperation between those States and the Imperial Government.
The ancient Republic of Norfolk was once the world's greatest naval superpower. The battleships of Norfolk fought in many of the great sea battles of yore, and the Republic was feared and respected by all. This was partly why it was chosen when the search was made as to where Tymaria City should be built when that great union was founded. But in the intervening years since then, Norfolk has seen a steady decline and the growth of non-native peoples from Aryasht, Rulak, and other areas. The goals of nationalism are:
- A purification of identity, and embracing the identity of Norfolk's native people.
- Emphasis on the interests state as being first and foremost.
- The promotion of local business and industry, and eliminating imports from outside Jingdao.
The NRP's economic plans can be broken down into three core policies:
- Support of local industry: The advocacy of protectionism, and opposition to free trade - particularly for the protection of "infant industries" and those facing import competition from abroad.
- Create physical infrastructure: Government finance of internal improvements to speed commerce and develop industry. This involves the regulation of privately held infrastructure, to ensure that it meets the Norfolk's needs.
- Create financial infrastructure: A government sponsored National Bank to issue currency and encourage commerce. This involves the use of local powers for the regulation of credit to encourage the development of the economy, and to deter speculation.
Secondary policies include:
- Government support for the development of science and public education through a public 'common' school system and investments in creative research through grants and subsidies.
- Rejection of class struggle, in favor of the "Harmony of Interests" between: owners and workers, farmer and manufacturers, the wealthy class and the working class.
The use of the term 'maritime supremacy' does not strictly mean military supremacy or dominance. What the NRP hopes to achieve by its policies of maritime supremacy is to restore Norfolk's naval assets to Republican Era levels. This includes:
- Prioritization of naval industries and support for growing those industries.
- Construction of a larger and more powerful naval fleet and marines.
- Regulation and maximization of Norfolk's marine resources.
- Development of an enhanced port authority for managing Norfolk's marine resources.
