The Purification of Norfolk

Post by Franklin Ross »

Little Ishmael burst through the door of his parent’s house so hard he nearly knocked it off the hinges. Turning from preparing dinner, his mother glared at him. “How many times have I told you to slow down?” she scolded.

Ishmael had trouble catching his breath long enough to speak. “Mother… mother… they are coming!” he finally blurted out.

A look of puzzlement crossed his mother’s face. “Who is coming, Ishmael?” she asked.

“The men from Camden!” he shouted.

Hearing the commotion Ishmael’s father had just walked into the room. At the mention of Camden he dropped the newspaper he was holding. “Quickly! Throw a few necessities in a bag, we are leaving now!” he yelled, turning on his heel and rushing to the bedroom.

Ishmael’s mother turned toward his father’s retreating footsteps. “But we can’t just up and leave!” she shouted after him. The father’s brusque voice echoed back from the bedroom: “We can, and we are. You saw what they did to the other village. It’s the same across Norfolk. There is no safe place here for us anymore.”

Ishmael didn’t know what to do, so he waited as his mother turned off the oven, leaving dinner half finished. She looked at her son and then grabbed his arm. “Come,” she said. “Go and pack a bag, take a few clothes, no toys, and hurry.” Ishmael fled to his room to do as he was bid. Ishmael’s mother then went after his father, to their bedroom, while he went to his own room to pack.

“Desai,” said Ishmael’s mother to his father as she entered the bedroom. “Where will we go?” Desai turned from his hasty packing to his wife. “Sayana, we must hurry. If we leave now we can reach a boat that can get us away. I have some money set aside for emergency. We can use it now. Perhaps we can get to Rulak, they are more tolerant of non-natives. If we’re lucky maybe we can charter a ride to San Cristobal or Tinalkina.”

“But our house… our belongings…” Sayana muttered.

“They mean nothing now,” said Desai coldly. “You heard about what they did at Traisoss. The burnings. The bodies.”

Sayana’s face paled, but only for a moment. Then she moved alongside Desai and threw a few pieces of clothing in a bag. Within five minutes all the family had shut the lights off and was leaving the house. Down the road, beyond the dip in the hill, the flicker of burning torches could be seen advancing. The mob was almost upon them. “Hurry!” hissed Desai. “We go north, to the shore, follow me and make no noise!” And with that the family headed off, hoping to escape the wrath of the angry mob that would soon advance upon and destroy their home in purifying fire.

Interesting. What is exactly happening in Norfolk these days? Some cult trying to purify the region while the government is busy reforming itself?

This reminds me a bit of the Indian - Pakistani situation...

Anyway, the N-CP has responded to the situation in a press statement.

Franklin “Firepower” Ross watched as the pyres burned higher and higher. The heat licked his face with warmth. The soothing orange light was cleansing, purifying Norfolk of the vermin that had brought the once-great Republic to its knees. The wooden effigies of the foreigner’s religions were gathered in the pyre, the fire turning their sacred faces to twisted mockeries. From this vantage point atop the hill he could see down into the harbor. The lights of other fires dotted the landscape, while down at the shore the winking lights of small boats fled off into the water. “The rats leaving the ship,” he thought to himself.

A sailor marched up and saluted the Admiral. “What is it, son?” he asked.

“The Aryans are fleeing, sir, along with the others that have been deemed impure. Shall we pursue?”

“No, let them go. We only want our land back. Let them go back to their own. Those that refuse to leave, however, you are free to ‘escort’ to the docks.”

“And if they resist, sir?” asked the ensign.

“I cannot be held responsible for loss of life if people refuse to respect the law,” said the Admiral wryly. “If you get my meaning.”

“Understood, sir,” saluted the ensign, who turned heel and marched back off into the night. Ross turned back to the burning pyre and smiled. Soon Norfolk would be cleansed and ready for the next phase of the plan.

Such admirable protection of impure minorities! Nobody can say that we don't care about our Aryan brethren! :daoflag:
