Visiting Tymaria Port

Post by Nathaniel »

After forty days at sea, finally, Prince Nathaniel's flottila reached Aryasht. It was a pathetic sight, the first thing that Prince Nathaniel saw as he gazed toward Tymaria City in the morning mist. Pathetic or not, it was still land.

"I've been at sea this much before in my entire life," Nathaniel told one of the waiters at breakfast.

"Is that so, sir?"

"Yes, quite."

And that was the end of that discussion. It was a bit lonely on this ship. Nathaniel looked forward to meeting the elite in Aryasht.

Browsing through the encyclopedias, he read that the newly admitted state had over a billion inhabitants. "Must be more than the whole of Shirerithian Benacia", he mused, and wondered how many nobles and parliamentarians that country could spit out, and yet remain governable.

Who was he going to meet today? There would only be one day in Tymaria City, and then the flottila planned to sail through the Norfolk archipelago over to Montauk and then Aryapur. For reasons of security, the planned stops at Rulak and the Dyre Islands were cancelled a few days ago after the Elwynnese denouncement of Jingdao in the Shirerithian legislature.

Met by baffled local officials who knew nothing about the Elwynnese prince's visit to Aryasht, Nathaniel was nonetheless glad. It was warm here in Tymaria City and, interestingly, Nathaniel was almost anonymous. He took the opportunity to visit the markets and the high street, a few museums, the old Tymarian legislature, a few more museums. He even went to a night club on his first night.

Of course, he was always accompanied by some security personel. But it didn't matter, there was a sense of freedom here in Tymaria City that Nathaniel hadn't felt since before he was sent to boarding school in Babkha.

"I could live here," he said to the woman to chatted him up at the night club, "but I'm just visiting."

She was a beautiful woman, her dark skin hinted to a more mainland origin. "But why don't you move here? Aryasht is free..."

Nathaniel didn't really know what to say. He didn't want to go all public about his role. How does one even say such things over a drink? That's he's Prince of Elwynn, Prime Minister of Natopia, child of the former Kaiser and Prince Elijah and the Chancellor and former Prince Nathan? How does one even break such news?

"Oh, but I can't. I'm sadly bound to many... customs and traditions."

"Where are you from by the way? Your accent... it's Elwynnese isn't it?"

"Yes, I am from Elwynn."

And then the couple spoke some about Elwynn, about the springs of Eliria, the majestic tundra of Cape Farewell. Never touching anything political, the two sat there by the drinks as the dances around them calmed. Dodia, as her name was, had never been to Elwynn. In fact, she had never left Apollonia. The stories that Nathaniel told intrigued her. And she intrigued him. He loved the carefree discussion, the company of normal people around him.

But as night turned to morning, Dodia and Nathaniel went different ways.

As he ate breakfast that morning, Nathaniel was happy and full of energy despite not having had any sleep at all that night. What a curse a princeship is...

About ten o'clock that morning, Nathaniel had still not heard anything from Aryasht's government. This concerned him. Why would this even be the case? The Conducator and Steward were both very adamant for a secure travel itenary. Perhaps some diplomatic crisis went on while Nathaniel was on his ship reading novels and writing diaries.

Just before lunch, however, Nathaniel and his bodyguards, sitting on deck by the harbour playing cards, were interrupted. The Mayor of Tymaria City would like to invite them for tea that afternoon.

"Serenity," one of the guard's spoke with due deference - the earlier easy humour about what hadn't happened for Nathaniel the night before now forgotten - "we have had a message from the Steward. Overnight the Norfolknath, Zaila Vrteti Bhangakara, spoke in favour of the League of Purity before the Landsraad. The rules of hospitality have kept us safe so far."

"That, together with a fleet on the horizon and a gravship overhead." Interjected one of his colleagues sardonically. The first bodyguard waved away the comment dismissively.

"That also. But we cannot be certain now that any official reception we will receive on this island will be as welcoming as we would like."

"What do you suggest?" Asked the Prince, his elegant, some might say overly delicate, features framed now by a cautious tension as the relaxation and normalcy of the brief interlude the previous night suddenly receded to become just another unreal memory.

"The credentials of this Mayor will need to be established. The Panopticon file..." the guard looked over to another colleague who was reading the screen of a datapad. The colleague looked up from the pad, met his gaze and shrugged. "...is unforthcoming. So perhaps it will be best if the shore party of Elwynns Riddare pay a visit to the Mayoral Palace for an informal chat. Meanwhile Hafiz and Rhodri can see to organising a motorcade. Can't be many taxi-wallahs on this island who would say no to an ingot with the Avakair Mint stamp applied. For the rest of us, I think it is time to get prepared. If your Serenity would be so kind as to don this flak jacket, and perhaps we can finish this game in the wardroom."

Adimadeva (until recently, Andrew) Solitary flicked a leaf on his bush lily plant. He was a man of action, or of an impatient temperament a previous wife had suggested, and waiting was not his style. It did not fit his grade or dignity; it was not something he was used to, nor something he enjoyed. His city was a bottomless cesspool where there was always something to do, some civic duty to discharge, some whore to see to, some crime to solve, some administrative matter to bring to committee. He was sitting on a straw basket chair on the balcony attached to the study of his villa one mile and a half from Tymaria City limits. It was a wonderfully tranquil place, of searing heat and sparse vegetation, far away from the distractions and concerns of the city, and perhaps part of the calming effect it had on Solitary was that it was where he had deposited the hundreds of thousands of various units of currency illegally appropriated during his tenure as mayor. His retirement fund, he liked to joke, along with his payment protection insurance - a nuclear bunker for a basement, stocked to the rafters with weaponry, long-life food and, for good measure, Benacian gold. He sucked on his sixth hemp cigar of the morning - he only smoked when stressed, and only this particular plant when particularly anxious - while preparing to light it. He sucked and he pondered the damn letter, the whole damn situation.

One letter, mimeographed and passed around the relevant government department heads and the Mayor. One absent and conspicuously silent feudal superior. One equally anti-loquacious Head of State. One city. One man of great importance. One Condominion, torn between two States. One fleet of ships penetrating its territory; one gravity-defying ship posing one dutiful civil servant one peculiarly painful headache. Why during this, his fifth term? The fifth term was meant to be the peaceful term. Bad enough adapting to Aryashti language, custom, governance and idiotic politicians; now Norfolk was slowly coming under siege. Time for waiting had past, a large part of him said, the time for action was now. His Boys - technically composed of detachments of the Vice Unit of the Municipal Constabulary, some loyal personal bodyguards, and a renegade secret service unit that had fled when Antica to offer its mercenary internal security to the highest bidder - had been keeping track of the movements of the Prince, though he hadn't gone far yet, was acting like a real tourist. Damn the gods, damn the Prince, damn the so-called Norfolknath - blame it on the bureaucrats, thought Solitary, and I didn't want a sixth term anyway.

He put down the cigar, went inside and picked up a phone. 'Merle? Could you communicate to our little visiting party that I would like to meet them personally at the Mayoral Palace this afternoon? The usual arrangements for Tarney.' Tarney, the Mayor's precise body double, the third he had been forced to use and the least convincing, even after the surgery, spent more time in that grandiose inner city mansion than he did. 'Standard diplomatic chit-chat. Find out more about what they're doing here, though I don't expect much. Try to plant a bug on a guard or two, even the Prince if you can, and use the ones with the "Tè Gōng Lĭ" stamp.' Putting down the phone, the Mayor sat down at his desk and started on something productive: trying to sign his new name. Ā... आ. Di... दि. Ma... म. De... दे. Va... व. Not too hard. Will take more practice.

Watching the local news from Tymaria City's TV station, Nathaniel was convinced about the Jingdaoese influence, not only over Kildare at large but even here in Aryasht. After all, this part of Norfolk used to be Kildare's land.

Nathaniel saw how the reports on the extermination of the entire East Khodastani population was conveyed as something positive, as something all nations should strive to do: "erradicate the impure elements of your society, and harmony will be brought to you".

It was sick.

Nathaniel chatted a bit with his guards. They hadn't decided to meet Mayor Adimadeva Solitary later on, the security check seemed to take forever.

After a few rounds of discussing the political state of affairs in the vicinity, the Prince advised the flotilla to set sail away from Aryasht toward home. It would be too risky, they agreed, to go the same route to Elwynn as they came here. They would have to leave port.

Even though they had great weapons on this flotilla and even though they had charge of the gravship, a confrontation with Jingdao or Kildare would be detrimental. Now was the time for safety.

They would tell no officials here of the plan. As soon as possible, the flotilla would go south-west to Rostock for refuels.

"Couldn't we stay a bit in Tasneemia City while we're in my little kingdom?" Nathaniel asked.

"No, your Serenity." was the mere answer. "The less you're in Natopia, the better. We need to get you to safety, back home in Elwynn. Natopia isn't safe enough for you, Sir."

Nathaniel hadn't visited Tasneemia for years. It was there that he was Raja, a king, and where people loved him.

As if his guard could read his mind, the guard said: "Don't worry, Sir. The people of Elwynn love you and want you safe."

The prince tried to hide his sigh. He didn't really trust these people, not after their brainwashing attempts a year or so ago. Being stoic, however, would ensure Nathaniel's survival.

"Alright then lads, set sail for Rostock!"

And by that, the flotilla left Tymaria City without saying good-bye.

At open sea, Nathaniel mused. "What if we go up the river to Eliria all of us... wouldn't that be a nice way to go home"

"Your Serenity, I'm not entirely sure that the Conducator would like that..."

If Prince Nathaniel was surprised to be suddenly reunited with Löjtnant Frederik Anders, he didn't really have time to show it as the Löjtnant smashed the barrel of his Webley Revolver directly across the face of the Prince, sending him sprawling onto the deck.

"My apologies, Serenity." said Frederik as he stood astride the prostrate youth. "We did everything we could for you, but it is time for Catodao to return to his people. Throw him overboard lads."

The sea is cold...

What ever happened? Why was he suddenly overboard?

Further and further away, the ships leave for the horizon. Nathaniel though was alone, alone in the freezing water. Rejected.

Was he going to die?

Would he meet his father Elijah? How about his grandfather Daniel? And what of the avatars of the Divine? Would he meet them?

What if there was no god? What if death is the end to it all?

What if he wasted his last moments in life pondering these questions?

Nathaniel found himself some composure and started swimming back to shore, or at least in the direction his confused mind thought the shore was.

Some kind of chance he would have. He was not giving up on life now. He would survive. One way or another.

The Kildari see something thrown off from the Elwynnese ship and while keeping safe distance from the flotilla they scout the sea to see what it is. Suddenly they see a face in the sea. "BY SISERA!" one of them screams, "IT'S CATODAO!" The rubber boat speeds towards the floating Lost Child of Jingdao and the Kildari pull him on board. Nathaniel is handed a blanket and some tea to get warm again, but he is not completely conscious again and does not seem to know where he is quite yet. The Kildari happily chat about the reward they will get for this important catch if they bring this man to the office of the Tègōng in Tè Gōng Li.

"Sir! He's not dead!" One of the seamen on watch cried out. Catching the attention of the Löjtnant.

"WHAT?!" Frederik exclaimed in despair and grabbed up a pair of binoculars with which to scan the murky all encompassing waters about them. "Where? Show him to me." The Seaman swiftly pointed to where a figure was being hauled out of the water onto a dingy being crewed by persons who the Löjtnant's brain processed as 'suspect indigenous types'.

"Have the Captain bring this ship about," he screamed at the crewmen about him on deck. "Form up a firing squad and prepare the skiff for launch. Radio the Gravship as well."

The KSI Haifisch emerged from the sea and was positioned between the rubber boat carrying the Kildari and the Elwynnese warships. There was cursing on board of the submarine when the captain-at-sea looked through his periscope. "This is Tymaria, not Tyrenia, we're in the wrong place lads..." The recruits apologized and the submarine submerged again.

In the mean time the rubber boat had been able to reach the shore and Catodao was carried into a station car which sped into the city.

"Lest's Septic Cunt!" Screamed the Löjtnant in dismay! "Where did that fucking submarine come from?" No one had an answer as he stormed into the Bridge and confronted the Captain.

"I thought it was a whale..." murmured the hydrophonist, whilst trying to avoid eye contact. The Löjtnant just glared at him.

"It doesn't matter. Just sink it."

"What with? Answered the Captain. Appalled. "This is a survey ship."

"Ram it! Gods Damn you. The fugitive is escaping. The skiff won't catch him in time now."

"The gravship." Answered the Captain meekly.

"Would have to tear the city apart looking for him and cause all manner of incidents... a risk we must take." The dinghy was now speeding away back towards the island.

"But ramming, could sink us ourselves. There are sensitive scientific instruments on board." The Captain technically outranked Frederik but one does not argue with an operative of the UIC.

"Irrelevant. RAMMING SPEED!" Bellowed the Löjtnant, his heart set on the carnage to come.

Sitting in the back seat of the station wagon on the streets of Tymaria City, its windows shutting out all light from the outside, Nathaniel couldn't help but feel glad to be alive, despite the horrible circumstances. The people around him were Siseranists. From all he could understand from their strange language, a language he had forgotten from his childhoos, he heard words such as "Sisera", "Te Gong" and "Sophia".

He didn't feel well. Where was the car-ride going? He fell asleep again. Had he been drugged or was the events of the latest hour or two too overwhelming? Whatever it was, did it matter? Sleep was a welcome intruder to his chaotic mind.

As the submarine was submerging beneath the water the noise of metal being torn was heard on the upside of the ship, water poured in and the captain-at-sea began to curse. "Evacuate!!!" he screamed but the recruits were panicking and didn't pay heed to his words. "Screw this" the captain-at-sea said to himself and brought himself to safety. As the captain-at-sea was floating in the cold sea he noticed the submarine emerging from the water and slowly sailing off. He thought for a moment his recruits had been able to repair the hull but then noticed fire coming from the submarine and saw how it stalled. More cursing.

In the mean time the station wagon was speeding trough the city of Tymaria, it stopped at a military checkpoint from the Kildari Army. The Kildari Puritans stepped out the car and greeted the Tègōng officer which stood there. "We've got Catodao! He was swimming!" they told him. The officer looked surprised, and was even more surprised when he noticed the Puritans actually had Cataodao sitting in the backseat of their station wagon. "I will prepare transport to the Temple of the Heavenly Light, good work." he complimented them.
