Lex Patria, Pt.1

Inspector Hyantine stepped over the police perimeter. Nice house, he thought, as Detective Solec approached him.

"Evening, Inspector."

Hyantine nodded. It was, indeed, evening. "What's the situation?"

Solec led the way in. "An incomplete emergency services call was made about an hour ago. The operator transferred it to the local substation, which dispatched two officers. They found no evidence of a break-in. An adult female body was found in the ground floor hallway, with a bloodied kitchen knife nearby. Slashed neck and stab in the lower back. The house registry lists a husband, wife, and daughter. The husband and daughter's whereabouts are currently unknown. Their car is also missing."

Hyantine looked up from the body. She was young. Mid-to-late twenties. When the knife was dropped, it left a splotch of new dried blood on the linoleum floor of the kitchen. The body, however, fell onto the carpetted hallway floor, which was now stained by dark brown pools emanating from the neck and back. It looked like there was a small trail of blood seeping out from her hair. One of the forensic analysts was photographing the patterns of splatter on the walls.

"Inspector?" A uniformed officer grabbed Hyantine's attention. "We've found something upstairs."

The husband's office. There was a photo of him with what looked like work colleagues. He was some sort of software engineer. His ID badge, left on the desk, said PLAYTRONICS along the top. A little disappointing, Hyantine thought. He was hoping for a big, interesting software company, like My Socrates Note. Well, someone has to design toy software. Or is it firmware for toys...

The flash of a camera bulb regained Hyantine's attention to the greater scene. Laid out on the desk was a file folder, its contents being a collection of photographs and official documents. The photographs were of a girl from childhood up through adolescence. The outfits were consistently conservative in nature, and the older she got, the more she looked like the woman downstairs. The documents included a birth certificate for someone named Diutia Iistnigila-- Pazech, Hyantine thought --, house registries littered with more Pazech names, a Contract of Domestic Partnership-- the signatures each had a blood stain next to them. Only the father and husband's signatures were there, but the document itself referenced that name again, Diutia Iistnigila. "What's the name of the woman downstairs?"

Solec checked his notes for a moment. "Mia Lysander. Maiden name... Justine."

A fairly mainstream-sounding Kaikian name. And the house certainly didn't look Pazech. It was... clean. Almost vacuous in the lack of clutter. The typical urbanite household.

The forensic analyst carefully lifted up some of the folder contents to photograph material underneath. The Change of Legal Name form caught Hyantine's eye before that too was moved. Underneath the folder was a large worn envelope, torn open on one side. There was a letter opener with a scrap of paper in the same color next to it. The husband's name, Andrew Lysander, was written on the front of it. Everything was bagged for evidence.

Other than that folder left open, its contents scattered, the rest of the desk, the rest of the room was neat and orderly. Hyantine wondered if the husband kept a ruler handy to make sure everything was in precisely the correct location. On the other side of the desk, a perfectly neat stack of varyingly colored folders, a short pile of loose sheets resting on top. The sheets looked somewhat haphazardly placed. Work stuff, from the look. The computer was left on, displaying a login screen.

By the time Hyantine returned to the kitchen, the body had been collected. The husband, Andrew Lysander, was on a flight bound for Vincennes. And he was late going through security. The airplane was taxiing back to the gate. Their daughter, Ana, was not with him.

Mia (Justine) Lysander, born Diutia Iistnigila. Public Security Division 3 would be sending someone for this. Hyantine sighed. Hatecrimes investigators were so uptight. Hyantine looked at his watch. 19:33. Public Security was also really prompt, which meant he would be missing dinner. Hyantine looked up across the kitchen. The microwave's clock display was blinking 01:37. Division 5 was going to send somebody too, for the daughter. Hyantine sighed again.
