"Fly ya goose, fly!"

Post by Elijah Ayreon »

I was looking through my archives of good Scandinavian poetry when I came across one poem that I really have liked and still like, and suddenly I thought that it was very Amokolian in spirit.

The poem, written by the Proletarian author Dan Andersson, has been translated to English. It's not as good as the original obviously but I think it catches the spirit of it still.
When those old, old wounds are hotly tearing
And from loneliness your cheeks are wet with tears;
When your life is just a stone to carry
And your song is grief, like crying cranes astray,
Go and drink a whiff of windy autumn,
Watch with me the fading, pale blue sky!
Come, we'll lean against the pasture gate-bars
While those wild, wild geese are flying by
For you who know Swedish, the poem is called "Gässen flytta" (The geese are migrating) and goes:
När de gamla såren heta tära,
när din kind är vätt av ensamhetens gråt,
när att leva är att stenar bära
och din sång är sorg som vilsna tranors låt,
gå och drick en fläkt av höstens vindar,
se med mig mot bleka, blåa skyn!
Kom och stå med mig vid hagens grindar,
när de vilda gässen flyga över byn!

I can see how this would be difficult to translate. A good poem nonetheless. Thanks for sharing it!

And it was an American translator-poet who translated it. But geese are special to the hearts of Amokolians...
