On Patrol - NSS Ganymede

An alternate mirror universe discovered by the crew of the NSS Ganymede. Major events in the Prime Micras timeline generally had the opposite outcome on Meekras. Meekras is defined by the continual five year world war between the Grand Commonwealth and SPEAR faction.

On Patrol - NSS Ganymede

Post by Nathan »

The NSS Ganymede was on standard patrol, escorting a cargo vessel to Giess. It had been nearly a year since the Grand Commonwealth had mysteriously lost half of their fighting power after entering the AlexNat Gate on the Giessan colony, New Natopia. The remaining GC was forced into a defensive war and the SPEAR nations pushed for a policy of aggressive containment. New Natopia was retaken and the Gate there remains inoperable. Now the war was nothing but a low rumble on the immovable fronts. The economy picked up. Trade was more secure. People were starting to become slightly more comfortable in their lives.

On the bridge, the officers on duty were going about their routines. Lt. Commander Goyor was in command since it was the night shift. His normal station was ship's chronicler, but he had expressed an interest in seeing more action.

"Sir!" said the ship's helmsman, "Something has appeared at the outer edge of our scans. Seems to be a ship. No SPEAR vessels should be out there. Our recon reports that GC do not operate there either."

Goyor's eyes opened large. "Fascinating. Raise shields, though. We can't leave the cargo ship. Begin broadcasting friendly messages on all bands and frequencies in all known spoken, written, symbolic, and mathematical languages," he turned in his chair to the comm officer, "Lt. Tagg, please wake the captain."

The ship, a slender, greyish triangle of a vessel, appeared within VFR distance of the Ganymede, betraying unto them an unfamiliar green-white-and-blue tricolour painted on its hull, alongside a string of alien runes. The Ganymede's bridge would fill with static as the strange craft attempted to hail them, the incomprehensible stream of data constellations remaining for some minutes before suddenly replacing itself with a human-sounding, but noticeably artificial, voice.

Unknown spacecraft, stand down and surrender thyself to the Safirian Empire or we, the crew of the space battleship Lacuna, shall destroy your vessel and all sapient beings aboard.

Desconocido nave espacial, de pie hacia abajo y se rinden a ti mismo al Imperio Safiriano...”

Captain Pavle was woken up by the gentle beeping of the intercom. He laid in bed for a few seconds, collecting his thoughts. He thought of his hometown in Ziegeland, a tiny little village, it was an industrial park in this universe though. He sat up and reached over to answer the intercom when suddenly the lights went red and the klaxons turned on, an emotionless computer voice repeated the words, "Unidentified Contact, likely aggressive" over and over.

Within minutes he was on the bridge, "You are relieved Commander Goyer, thank you. Report."

"Sir, we pinged this vessel on the outer rim of the system, they are currently on an intercept trajectory. I have placed us between the hostile and the cargo ship. They are broadcasting multiple languages, all are Meekran, but they all identify themselves as the battleship Lacuna and demand our surrender to the Safirian Empire."

Pavle turned to the tactical officer, "Lieutenant, can you tell how well armed they are? Can we defend ourselves?"

"Captain, based on my readings I'd say our ships are roughly equivalent, but we are at a distinct disadvantage because of the cargo ship. I recommend transporting the cargo crew aboard the Ganymede now before the hostile ship enters weapon range. It's the only way to even the fight, otherwise our resources and attentions would be unfocused."

"I don't intend to fight, at least not yet," he turned to the communications officer, "Any change in the message?"

"No sir, I've been broadcasting standard peace greetings on all frequencies and in all known languages. They are repeating their broadcast over and over."

"Do they understand us? How do they even know all Meekran languages?"

"Sir, some of the languages are being broadcast in very distinct dialects, there's a 90% overlap in these broadcasts and the languages stored in our memory core. I theorize that they are somehow using our own language programs to communicate with us."

"If they scanned our core, why don't they know that we're responding? Why can't they understand our response?"

"Well Captain, maybe they don't care what we're saying. We have no knowledge of this Safirian Empire, it could be a vast and ancient star empire, beyond our imagination. We could be invading their territory, it's likely that the Meekras-Giess corridor is on their outer boundaries, perhaps an insignificant backwater from their point of view, otherwise we would have encountered them before."

"No, let's not second guess ourselves here. We've patrolled this trade corridor for years and never encountered any thing of this sort before. We stand our ground, divert power to shields be ready to quick-change the weapons, but I don't want to appear hostile yet, they must make the first move."

"Aye sir. They will be within weapons range in 5 minutes..."

OOC: All but one. I haven't determined whether *Safiria has any holdings on Meekras yet, so Airumali (third-last line) may not be a Meekran language. ;)

The ship continued broadcasting its message without change for a good hour before firing eight warning shots in the direction of the Ganymede.

"No damage reported sir, they cleared our shields by precisely 100 meters on each shot. Likely warning shots."

Captain Pavle scratched his head, "Well, we certainly can't give up here. Show them we are not indefensible. Perhaps they only understand other shows of aggression. Fire... 16 phaser bursts, 100m from the likely perimeter of their shields. Make them aware that we will not back down to them. Then broadcast this message:

"Safirian vessel, leave us alone and there is no need to summon our own planet's fleet. If you fire upon us, the Meekran Planetary Alliance will consider you an active and uncontrollable threat, resulting in your destruction. Power down your weapons now and leave this sector now."

The weapons officer looked up, "Aye sir, phaser bursts away, repeating message now... but... there's no such alliance..."

Captain Pavle smirked humorlessly, "Well we know nothing about them, I hope they know nothing about us... maybe they'll bite."

The phaser bursts bounced harmlessly off of nothing, and the ship abruptly replaced its message with a much more ominous one.

"Due to your refusal to bend to our orders, you shall now be annihilated.

Abruptly, the ship's nose split open, revealing a large spinal cannon, which began to charge with blinding white energy.

"Sir, that weapon is generating power orders of magnitude beyond our scales. Frankly, I can't predict whether or not it will instantly vaporize us, permanently disable the ship, shred the surrounding subspace, or all three. It is beyond my understanding."

Captain Pavle was in a difficult position, but he was presented with a clearly threatening and barbaric race. Since communication proved to be stunted, neither side fully understanding the other, Pavle reasoned that fighting was the only option. He turned on the ship-wide intercom:

"Now hear this. This is Captain Pavle. As you are aware we have been intercepted by an alien vessel belonging to the Safirian Empire, an unknown entity. This could be an advance scout, a patrol cruiser, we have no idea as communication has proven unreliable, or they refuse to listen. One thing is certain: they are aggressive and issued threats to kill all life on board unless we surrender. A race of beings so bent on destruction will likely not be kind to prisoners, so I have decided that we will stay and fight. Hopefully, if we perish, our logs and data will help SPEAR prepare for any future incursions by these blueskins. May Bous have mercy on us."

"Lieutenant! Unload all we've got straight down that thing's exposed nose! Initiate multi-lateral assault!"

The NSS Ganymede lurched forward, straight for the open and glowing nose of the Safirian warhip and unleased all forward phaser banks and torpedo launchers before turning abruptly to unload the rear weapons.

Suddenly, a much larger ship appeared behind the Lacuna, and hailed the Ganymede with a voice that clearly belongs to a living being, bearing an accent best described as ‘unidentifiable’.

“Damn it, Mneme, I said the left one... No, the left one... Your left, stillmind!... There we go.”

The speaker clears her throat.

“Hello. We heard that you ran across one of our AI-driven craft... unfortunately, they have a tendency to shoot first and ask questions later, so it'd be ideal if you could move out of the way for a minute.”

The new ship's spinal beam cannon begins to charge.

The cannon had almost finished charging when it suddenly sparked and was enveloped in a cloud of electrical discharges. This soon dissipated and in its place a long plume of smoke drifted off into the void.
