    Favored Names

    Postby Harvey » Tue Jul 19, 2011 5:36 pm

All of the Favored have two names.

The first name is chosen by the citizen themselves. Favored names are often very literal and blunt, being real words with real meanings rather than names for names’ sakes. It is an unusual Favored quirk that they prefer names beginning with the letter P – roughly 30% of the citizens have a “P-name”. This number is slightly down in recent times; there is a minority counterculture against traditionalism brewing, citing beloved names such as Real Diamond that do not begin with the letter P.

The name is chosen on the 8th birthday within the Basin dreamworld, but they can be changed on a whim. Name changes usually reflect a new interest in the citizen or possible goals or morals they hold as important. Hero worship, naming oneself after previous citizens that held that name and did great deeds, is also common.

Because the names are real words, and there are only so many good ones to go around (especially good ones that start with P) there is no taboo against choosing common names. However, there is substantial social pressure, especially higher up within the governemnt, to have P-names based on obscure, powerful words, sometimes borrowed from other cultures. Those that choose not to are effectively making a stand for something, so they’d better be prepared to defend their decision.

The second name is a citizen’s ID number, similar to a social security number. While the chosen names may switch often, the ID numbers never do, and so data is usually stored by ID number rather than chosen name. For example, though the communications bracelets used by the Favored only display chosen names, they connect calls based on ID numbers, so changing one’s chosen name won’t affect their friends from being able to contact them.

It is written as the series of numbers XXXX-XXXX-X. The first four-digit number is the stasis tank where the person was grown within Basin (previously: First Bastion). There are 10,000 tanks, numbered from 0000 to 9999. Certain tanks are temporarily out of order, and not all citizens survive the process (they cannot die within the Basin dreamworld, but their body can fail physically even within the stasis) so not every number is always used.

The second four-digit number is the Year of Awakening in the Favored’s calendar, which starts numbering years when the first colonists awoke. These numbers skip 15-year incriments, as the Basin dreamworld education period always lasts 15 years.

The final number is the dreamworld that the citizen was grown in. There are currently 3 functioning dreamworlds; thus, 3 sets of 10,000 tanks, so about 30,000 new citizens every 15 years, minus 1 or 2% for fatalities. Several more are being prepared if rapid population growth is desired.

All stasis cycles begin on the first day of the Favored year and end fifteen years later, minus five days. The ending day occurs exactly 5 days before the end of the Favored calendar, which gives the newly awoken citizens five days to adjust to the Real before entering Favored society on the 1st of their year, a major celebration day. The 1st of the Favored year is Feb 19th in our calendars and is considered to be everyone’s birthday.

A common ID number may read 8342-0342-2. Preturnatural, the First Awake, had no ID number, as the system wasn't in place then, but it could be thought of as 0000-0000-1.

Three cell numbers have been permanently retired due to the horrendous actions or terrible coincidences associated with them and the citizens that they grew. The details of these incidents may be explained at a later date. These cells lie dormant, growing no citizens, and their numbers will never be used again. Even other dreamworlds will never use these numbers. On the other hand, cell 0718 is considered to be exceptionally good luck because of a similarly unexplained incident, and citizens with that cell number are often sought after as minor celebrities.

Most Favored don’t know the ID number of their friends or co-workers, but there is nothing wrong with knowing it. After all, it’s easy to get this information out of one’s bracelet, and AURA will answer plainly if ever asked. It’s simply not useful information for many Favored to need to remember. Bracelets handle all communication easily and so even a chosen name change isn’t a big deal.

Foreigners wishing to conduct business that requires them to be within Favored territory must register for a foreigner’s ID number. These have the same general format, but the first four digits are the issuance number for that year (in order, starting from 0000 and going up) and the last digit is an “F” instead, for “Foreigner.” In the highly unlikely event that more than 10,000 of these need to be issued in a year, the “F” will change to “G” and so on, but this has not yet been necessary. Citizens of other countries that apply and are accepted as Favored citizens keep their foreigner’s ID number, but instead the “F” changes to a “A.” Successfully registering as either a foreigner or as a permanent citizen grants full use of a communication bracelet.

A typical foreigner’s ID number looks like 0052-0359-F.

Failing to register an ID in Favored society is simply impossible. AURA tracks the movements of all people, citizens or not, within Real Diamond via their bracelets. People without bracelets are detected quickly and very polite agents are dispatched to have a little chat. Sometimes there are legitimate reasons – malfunctioning equipment, a lost bracelet and on the way to get a new one; the Favored are not unsympathetic and are quite reasonable if you play by their rules. But someone picked up without a bracelet that can’t explain themselves and has nobody to vouch for them may find themselves in very, very serious trouble. At best, they may be deported; at worst, they may never be heard from again.

edit: just realized that the math implied here is very bad. If 30,000 citizens are born every 15 years, and a lifespan is about 60, then the total population of the country will be around 120,000. I was aiming for at least 500,000 - it's supposed to be small, but not THIS small. Will need to give this some thought - don't simply want to expand the heck out of Basin.
