[Drachumphan Echo] Last of the Kalirie

Post by Scott Alexander »

Our Science Correspondent reports:
DRACHUMPHAN - Veyiri, the oldest of the three polar bears remaining at the Drachumphan zoo, died at age 41 today.

The apocalypse was not kind to the polar bears, ancient symbols of Raikothin royalty, who died out in droves due to climate changes during the dark years after the destruction of the old world. At some point in interhistory - after the history of the old world had stopped being written, but before anyone had started recording the new era - Omi had sent men out to capture some of the last remaining bears and start a captive breeding program for them in Drachumphan. It had worked, up to a point, but the lack of genetic diversity eventually took its toll, and fewer and fewer bears have been surviving. With Veyiri's death, the only two kalirie left in the world - as far as anyone knows - are Chiri and Siphte, Veyiri's grandson and granddaughter, both age two.

Drachumvelin zoologists are desperate to figure out a way to successfully breed the two and prevent the polar bears from going extinct, but have admitted they are short on ideas. Previous attempts to breed them with some of the smaller black and brown bears from down south have ended in failure, as if the ursine royalty was too proud to pollute its bloodline.

"If the Kalirie were to die," High Priest Gatr Euyyonin told the Drachumphan Echo, "then one of the last sparks of ancient Raikoth will leave the world forever, and the Drachumvelin people will lose a little bit of their soul."

Visitors are welcome to see Chiri and Siphte at the Drachumphan zoo for the discounted summer admission fee of eight amber.
