Travel in modern Elwynn

Post by Nithi Kirenion »

(inspired by the more Ashkenatzan approach to conworlding)

Most of the lands of Raikoth are at about 70 degrees latitude. Circumference of the world at a given latitude is (equatorial circumference * cos(latitude)), so the circumference of Micras at the latitude of Raikoth is about 14000 km.

The distance between Ai-Raikoth (Hyperborea) and Northern Absentia is 700 px, divided as follows: 200 from Ai-Raikoth to Cimmeria/Elwynn, 300 from Cimmeria/Elwynn to Bjorngard, 100 from Bjorngard to Western Absentia, and 100 from Western Absentia to Northern Absentia.

700 px is 20% the full MCS size of 3600 px, therefore the distance from Ai-Raikoth to Northern Absentia is 20% of 14000 km = 2800 km = 1700 miles. This is about the distance from Los Angeles to St. Louis, or from Madrid to Warsaw. It follows that the legs of the journey are as follows: Ai-Raikoth to Cimmeria/Elwynn is 500 miles, Cimmeria/Elwynn to Bjorngard is 750 miles, Bjorngard to Western Absentia and Western Absentia to Northern Absentia are both about 250 miles. For comparison, 250 miles is about the distance between Miami and Havana.

Transportation in this area is a problem. Land based transportation is right out, both because many important destinations (Ai-Raikoth, Cimmeria, Northern Absentia) are on islands, and because those that are not are nevertheless separated from Shirerithian territory by swathes of hostile (Elwynnese) or anarchic (Amokolian) territory. But ships won't work either, because half the time the ocean is frozen, and icebreakers are slow and expensive. But land-based vehicles won't work either because a lot of the distance is open sea. I have provisionally settled on hovercrafts, based on the SR.N4. I'll sketch up a model of a Raikothin Tiyyinam - class hovercraft sometime, but imagine something like that, only sleeker and more aerodynamic and with fibreglass sails coming off of it a bit like the ones on here.

The LTE (Lirikoth Tiyyinam Esa, "Elwynn Hovercraft Network"), as currently proposed, will have five major hubs: Anshir, Wolfraven, Hyfrost, an unnamed port to be constructed in Western Absentia, and Jessvillia (R: Anshir, Uolrhaphen, Yyphrosde, atsaris ethomaister ansha, and Telion Iyasi). Each hub will also have smaller services to nearby destinations: Anshir will have a route to Tyrgaard, Wolfraven will have routes to Vijayanagara and Port Illumination, Hyfrost will have a route to Konstantipol and possibly Tsofnhafn, the Absentian port will have a route to Corrigible and the Isle St. Jean, and I would like to arrange a connection between Jessvillia and La Roche-Derien, Batavia.

Each hub connects to the area's land-base transportation network: Anshir connects to the rail line that follows the western Ai-Raikothin coast, Vijayanagara connects to the rest of Shirerithian Elwynn, and I am hoping to get a connection between Bjorngard and the Ashkenatzan railway system.

Due to political issues, there are as yet no plans to include the Elwynn Riqi Adurellion on the network, but if the Kaiser's attempts to negotiate a treaty are successful, Caligae could become a sixth hub region for the network.

Journey times, assuming a speed of about 50 - 70 knots for a Tiyyinam, are:

Anshir to Wolfraven: 9 hours
Wolfraven to Hyfrost: 11 hours
Hyfrost to Western Absentia: 4 hours
Western Absentia to Jessvillia: 3 hours

The longer two journeys are offered both during the day and overnight; the overnight version is much more popular.

Air travel is also growing in availability between some destinations, but it is heavily taxed because of its polluting nature and flights are not always available, especially during bad weather. There have been talks about negotiating with Ashkenatza for a airship service, but these are still in prelimary stages.
