Only the penitent man will pass

Post by Primo de Aguilar »

The operation had been conducted in relative secrecy, which elicited a knock at dawn on the Pentheral Basilica of St. Bessie by a professed from the Cathedral of Basileus Petros III who took a red-eye flight. The triple-sealed missive was personally handed over to none other than the Pentheros, who was humbly asked if he would receive a visitor to discuss confidential matters of a mutual interest.

The Constancian Air Force jet flew via the commercial air corridor, escorted by a flight of four fighter aircraft, all of Shirerithian provenance. Upon landing at Doza International Airport, a squad of the Basileusan Private Guard disembarked and surrounded the aircraft.

As the sun set on Eura, the stewardess on board gently shook the distinguished visitor awake, as observant eyes outside swept the immediate surroundings for any sign of danger. If it happened to the Natopian sovereign, it could happen to anyone else.

The Pentheros opened the sealed envelope and made preparations to receive the visitor and cleared his schedule for private discussions.

He was dressed in Court uniform, the attire worthy of an audience with a major religious leader and quasi head of state.

Transportation brought him to the place. The guards disembarked, letting their suspicious gazes cover every possible hidey-hole, trusting no one.

At last, he was brought before Aldin. Strange how relatively young his contemporaries were. He already felt like a grandfather several times over.

He gave a respectful bow. He could have been more diplomatically deferential, but he was not just representing the majesty of the Free and Associative Kingdom; he was also representing His Constancian Majesty.

He extended a white-gloved hand in the Alexandrian manner.

"Holiness, thank you for receiving me. I'm Jaime Augustin Joaquin Primo de Aguilar."

Aldin tipped his head and offered his own hand to greet the Autokrator's gloved hand, "May Bous bless you, Your Excellency, and may he bless Their Constancian Majesties and the Constancian people, too."

He gestured towards two overstuffed chairs that flanked a coffee table with light refreshments set out. "Please, have a seat so we may discuss things. As you know Constancia is a very special nation in the Bovic community, and the Basileus himself is highly regarded by myself and the Church for being so welcoming and inviting the Bovic church in to his country. I am eager to hear your news."

"We are grateful for Your Holiness' support in the recent conflict," said the Autokrator, who helped himself to the refreshments.
"We plan, of course, to formally and ceremonially show this gratitude, should Your Holiness see fit to examine your flock in the Kingdom. I will personally see to it that Your Holiness' words reach Their Majesties' ears." He took a bite. It was good. "Your prayers for the continued good health of His Majesty would be greatly regarded. His Majesty's health, unfortunately, leaves much to be desired," the Autokrator said, in sad tones, "...though the Kingdom still has great need of his service as of yet."

"Might I enquire how Your Holiness fares? This is something of a neighborly visit, after all."

It was always good manners to discuss light matters before dealing with the meat of the meeting.

"I would be delighted to visit the Constancian people. My predecessor was quite fond of Vey, the journals I inherited from him spoke of great plans to grow the Bovic community there and foster a brotherly connection between our two Hellenophilic nations," then Aldin set down his cup of coffee, "I will say an extra prayer to Bous for His Majesty's health."

After a brief pause, both men letting the silence highlight the concern for Petros' health, Aldin picked up his coffee again, and offered a polite smile to change subjects,"I'm doing quite well, thank you. Physically at least. Mentally and emotionally I am taxed, the recent disappearance of our Emperor and former Regent weighs heavy on my soul. I'm told the Emperor is recovering from serious wounds and apparently self-inflicted starvation and malnutrition. The former Regent has been maimed, we pray the plastic surgeons are able to rebuild his face and hands."

(OOC: For narrative purposes treat the rescue operation as having already happened and that the Emperor is in hospital undergoing reconstructive surgery somewhere (something about hideous third degree burns and having gnawed off his own foot whilst in captivity or something) - that the rescue mission encountered "complications" might be the reason it hasn't been publicised all that well...)

"Such a crime must be repaid, measure for measure," noted the Autokrat under his breath, just before taking a long, contemplative sip.

Time to stop with the preliminaries. He set the cup and saucer down.

"Holiness, I come before you now as state representative of the Free and Associative Kingdom, first, to informally convey the thanks of the Basileus and his people, for assistance given, and yours, personally, during our time of peril - the formal presentation may be done at a more convenient time, either in Vey, or here. Second, we seek closer relations with the Pentheral State - economically, socially, culturally. We are neighbors, after all."

Aldin nodded along, "Yes, yes of course Your Excellency. I believe we must strengthen our relations. For too long we have relied on our mutual associations with Natopia. That is not a substitute for a true and lasting bilateral friendship between our two nations. I am very much in favor of Athlon and Constancia growing closer together as brothers."

The kind words were received with a grateful nod.

"On our end, we will immediately authorize and open direct commercial flights from Vey to Doza, which will make it a somewhat busier transportation hub. The same with passenger and commercial shipping. Constancia has many sights to offer Natopians, and there are many locations where one may more effectively ponder the ways of Bous; and no doubt there are many of the Euran herd who would like to pilgrimage here."

"There is no doubt a large number of Dozans and Veyans who travel back and forth. Vey is the seat of the Fourth Eparchy, and radiates spiritual dominion over the entire south-east quarter of Micras! The Althonic-Constancian relationship will be built strongly, the Bull and the Eagle merged into a mighty creature, a creature familiar to the bygone Euran nations. Considering that Natopia and Constancia have a bilateral treaty, and also that Athlon is bound to be aligned to Natopian foreign policy, I'd suggest that Athlon and Constancia sign a Corollary Agreement to the Pact of Perpetual Friendship which will fill in any gaps or addresses any special needs that only exist between Athlon and Constancia that would not apply to a Natopian-Constancian agreement."
