[St Joelle's Monastery] The Fate of Adam

Post by Aldin »

After several torturous days, Adam recovered from his trial-by-grapefruit. Aldin saw this as a good omen, a sign that Bous wanted Adam to remain on Micras to do more, now hopefully, good work.

Adam's first day at the monastery began at 4AM, when the Abbot came into each room and pushed the monks out of their 'beds' onto the stone floor. "The pain you feel as your face smashes into the stone is the same pain Bous feels when you go against him."

Chores and fieldwork began immediately, with the Abbot whipping and kicking the monks if he deemed them to be slacking. "Your laziness is indicative of your level of sin, the pain of the lash is the same pain Bous feels when you do not worship him correctly."

Finally, at 8AM a meager breakfast was served. A small glass of milk, the product of that morning's work. Still warm. The other monks sipped it slowly, reverently. Adam chugged it down, the first food he's seen since the grapefruit.

Silent prayer and contemplation was between 8:05AM and 5PM. By noon, Adam was violently ill again, assuming it was the lasting effects of the grapefruit he endured the violent eruptions and continued to pretend to pray.

Dinner was served to each monk's room prompted at 5:05PM, another glass of milk, a cup of runny yogurt, a piece of toast, and a wedge of tasteless cheese. Adam asked the server, somewhat sarcastically, "No butter?" The server struck him over the head with the metal yogurt ladle without saying a word.

Monks now had free time until sunset. Most studied in the archives, while others continued to pray in their rooms. Adam's free time was spent vomiting until sunset when the abbot came to each room and locked the monk in and commanded them to sleep.

By the next morning, Adam's cell was nothing short of an atrocity. The Abbot hesitated to send Adam to the infirmary but knew that if Adam died now, after surviving the Trial, the Pentheros would blame the Abbot.

The doctor gave Adam a piece of toast with butter slathered on it, "Here this will settle your stomach. We don't serve butter here normally, because the Abbot does not believe we are worthy of it."

Adam glared at the doctor as he hungrily at the toast, "I haven't read much of the Tetrabiblios, but I don't think.... ugh..." Adam lurched forward and threw up on the doctor. The doctor, unfazed, raised an eyebrow and left the room. He returned with a glass of milk.

"Here, drink this. It's cold, pasteurized, whole fat. Very tasty, I get it delivered from a supermarket in Eupragia."

Adam drank the milk. The cold, safe milk tasted so good. So delicious. But then he was tasting it again, in reverse.

The doctor put his hand on Adam's should, "I think I've seen enough. You're lactose intolerant."

The first shock of the system in Saint Joelle’s Monastery had finally passed, and as Adam found ways of dealing with his new-found lactose-intolerance, Adam started planning ahead. What motivated him through the tedious routines was his burning hate for his mother. She had wanted him dead, she had removed from all future inheritance, and removed him from his child and wife, and forced him to divorce his wife.

There were positive aspects – although strict, Vom treated Adam as he treated the other novices. Everyone among the monks – “brothers” – was equal.

Monks here led a life that made them mentally and physically strong. Adam giggled at the thought that Aldin had placed him here out of all places. Had Aldin not wanted to break him?

The rigorous regime saw Adam wake up at 6 every morning, wash, do morning exercises, have breakfast, do housework and study until lunch. Everything up until just before lunch was done in complete silence, in the traditions of the order. After lunch, there was a session each day of “divinity through physical empowerment”, which was akin to gymnastics and martial arts, though the slot was often replaced by tending physical housework, such as building, carpentry, and so on.

Despite all restrictions on Adam, Adam managed to find a few cellblock mates that became loyal to him. He called them acolytes. They helped him with all things he needed and did everything he desired, and they smuggled in news and lactose enzyme pills from the outside world to him. That is how he knew of the dealings of his mother, his son, his whore of a wife, and how he managed to live comfortably at the monastery. He knew also that he had been excluded from his dynastic names, and therefore he adopted Adam Anushiruwân as his only name, scrapping any other names he had. Luckily to him, it seemed he was still a Lord and an Imperial Highness, titles he insisted his cellmates would use when speaking to him. And so loyal his acolytes were to him.

But best of all was that he had become so much physically and mentally stronger by being here. He had gained 10 kg despite his lactose intolerance! Next time Aldin would check on him, Adam would be sure to thank him for this chance of redemption.
