Gelvyn Hall, New School K@A

The conference room was in one of the grander rooms of the old hall, right off of the school's president's office. The provost had called the meeting to discuss the rising rate of Pupil and Student disappearances.

"What do we know of these missing people?" Christo asked as soon as the meeting came to order.

"Master Provost, they are mostly Pupils, a few Students, but almost all of them are over the age of 50. And, perhaps not coincidentally, they were all born in the former southern lands of Sororiya, lands that are now part of Universalis."

"But why have they disappeared from all demesnial and imperial records? The border between Sororiya and Universalis is open."

"That I do not know Provost, we do know that all missing persons were gainfully and appropriately employed. No indications of disgruntlement or malaise. In most cases, our records indicate that no family members of the missing still reside in Universalis. So there is no one waiting for these people wherever they go."

For a brief moment, Christo's eyes glazed over and he was transported back in his memories to life in Zeemia, now Zoom City. His undergrad days at Zeemia Community College. One or two wild parties he was thankful happened before social media. His first date with Valentina. Valentina...

Christo's vision become blurred. He blinked away the tears. Each blink he saw her in his mind... laying there in the hospital.

He quickly stood up, wiped his eyes on his sleeves and left the room without a word.

"I knew it was too soon for him to come back," whispered the vice president of development.

"He was written in, if you can't bet on that man's sense of responsibility, you can't bet on anything. He wasn't going to let the Pupils of this district down. Besides, in the long run this will be good for him," the president's secretary shot back.

The room sat in the awkward din of hurried whispers for several minutes before relaxing into casual tones. After ten more minutes Christo returned.

He cleared his throat and sat down, "So. We need to go to Universalis," he nodded his head and the others nodded back, in equal parts shock and acknowledgement, "Good, adjourned. Thank you for your time."

The Provost stood up, tilted his head towards the room, and left.
