Disembarking: NSS Ganymede

Post by Nathan »

The NSS Ganymede was of the Io class, the newest class in the Natopian Spacefleet. The Ganymede herself benefited from upgrades and bugs worked out in the prototype NSS Io, making the Ganymede the most advanced ship in Spacefleet. The ship had been, along with most of the Spacefleet, orbiting near NISS maintaining a line of defense for planetside Natopia.

Captain Pavle was in his quarters when comm system alerted him to a priority message. He moved over to his desk and tapped in his passcode to open the realtime. A man's head appeared on the screen, it was Admiral Hathton, the commander of NISS and Fleet Operations, "Captain, we've direct orders from the Minister himself, we're finally going back into the deep. The Ganymede is to dock to take on some mission payload and personnel and proceed directly to Tarsica to investigate New Lindstrom, determine the status, make recommendations for upgrades, and prepare it for eventual re-population. Any questions?"

Pavle replied, "Yes Admiral, what type of payload are we taking on if we are only ascertaining the base's status?"

"You will be taking on a group of Greivar to aid in preliminary repairs and EVA affairs. Our hyproponics lab have also come up with some species more perfectly suited to low-g growth that New Lindstrom's 'ponics lab would need. Also if the base is sustainable, you will leave a complement of personnel who will be transferring from NISS. You will remain in orbit there until instructed otherwise."

"Sir, if I may speak candidly," the admiral nodded, "It seems as if this type of mission would be more suited to a transport ship, or even an escort class like the Ariadnes."

"Yes captain, it would seem that this is well below the capabilities of Ganymede. However, since your ship is the pinnacle of Natopian tech, sending you will send the right message that Natopia is fully committed to re-establishing orbital supremacy. We've also been out of direct contact with the base for awhile, procedure dictates sending nothing armed than a cruiser."

"I understand Admiral, we'll begin docking procedures immediately, Pavle out." Pavle closed his terminal and began walking to the bridge.

On the bridge he informed his officers of the mission, and ordered the helmsman to begin docking procedures to take on the payload.

The Ganymede began moving silently through space, passing other vessels as it navigated to the extended docking pylons on the NISS. Contact was made and Captain Pavle gave the order to open the airlock once a seal was confirmed. Pavle asked the first officer to oversee the stowing of the payload, the quartering of the transfer personnel, and the accommodation of the Greivar.

After an hour, the entire payload was onboard and stored. The Greivar had been assigned a small cargo hold with the grav-plates disengaged to allow them to move comfortably. After the first officer returned to the bridge and confirmed the captains concerns, the Ganymede was ready to be underway.

"Please open a channel to docking control, Mr Telgar." "Open sir." "This is Captain Pavle requesting permission for Ganymede to disengage from docking pylon alpha and disembark from Micras orbit en route to Tarsica." The dock controller replied, "Permission granted, and pylon's disengaged Ganymede. Good luck in the deep and bullspeed!"

The Ganymede pulled away from NISS's massive structure. After it was clear, orbital thrusters disengaged and the main engines powered up for the journey to Tarsica.

Once they were underway the captain asked the helmsman for an ETA. "Sir, at present velocity we will be within orbital distance of Tarscia in 1 day 13 hours 21 minutes." "Excellent. Initiate standard cruising procedures."
