Unwitting transit

Post by The Exile »

To say the thing was aware of its location was, perhaps, slightly overstating matters. It did not want awareness of anything, it shied away from it if ever it came. It was content not to think. Sometimes it happened anyway, but then it would scream for a while and try to impale itself. It didn't work, but after its half-missing voicebox went raw, blessed ignorance would return and the thing would feel better.

Nonetheless, it had not gone in this direction in quite some time. It preferred to keep moving, and perhaps its usual ranges had become too familiar to it. And besides, people had seen it there. That was unavoidable, but it didn't like to be seen. There was always the possibility that they'd come after it, try to talk to it. recognize it.

It paused at the sight of a thing through the trees. A built thing.

It crept closer, drawn by its shape. It was... different, but yes, it was similar enough. It remembered-

No.

It shut the door on the memories, gaining only a faint glimpses of things long gone - soldiers, plans of defense - and then turned away, tottering as fast as its worn limbs could carry it.

Almost unheeded, yet with its hilt held in a vice grip, the point of a sword dragged a furrow in the ground behind it.
He is lost to others, who has lost himself
