Fishing Boat Sinks

Tragedy struck today as a small fishing boat struck some previously-unidentified rocks and went down in stormy waters. The CS Minnow went down with all crew, including her Captain, Roger Wilco, all of who were declared lost at sea after an extensive search by the Coastal navy. The sinking has triggered an outpouring of controversy and debate over the need for more lighthouses, naval charts and, most especially, a dedicated coast guard to assist in a nation dominated by seafaring.

Currently the two main lighthouses are located in Lighthouse City and on Bell Island, both of which were already in existence when Brettish forces assumed control of the Skerries. Several smaller unmanned warning lights exist, but it is a small consolation in a nation of numerous islands surrounded by rocky reefs. As a result of the accident public outcry has increased tenfold and citizens are demanding better safeguards. The government has responded citing its focus on other areas, including longstanding disaster relief efforts and resettlement, as the primary factor in this oversight.

After meeting with government representatives and local officials, the Coastal administration has agreed to open a commission into reveiwing naval safety procedures and to begin a survey of reef beds that pose a danger, identifying those that need lighthouses and commissioning construction. The greatest obstacle will be funding, as lighthouse construction is not cheap, and many ships still do not have electronic radar. Proponents are suggesting cheaper unmanned stations with warning lights, but even these are costly. In any event, the survey will take at least a year or more to complete, meaning safe waters are still some time away.
