The Brettish Invasion

MELTON -- As a new rail line kicks off its first passage along the northern coast between Pharos and Lighthouse, the shores of the Skerries are being bombarded by boatloads of Brettish refugees. Small villages and long-abandoned cities are being re-populated by survivors seeking refuge on the islands. For their part, the Brettish government has been at pains to direct these survivors where to land, resulting in a seemingly random pattern of settlement, save for the fact that almost all are exclusively along the coastlines. The greater majority of people have been directed to the designated re-settlement zone that has been earmarked as the corridor between Pharos and Lighthouse. Though this has since extended itself east due to the sheer volume of survivors landing, terminating at the old Brittanic city of Melton.

Melton itself, once the regional capitol of the Brittanic Sandwich Islands, has been abandoned for over a century. Much of the city's infrastructure has crumbled, with nature re-asserting herself as the dominant force. But for a family without a home, even a collapsing building offers some shelter. Melton is outside the Brettish resettlement zone, thus survivors have taken it upon themselves to enter and settle the old city, setting up their own quasi-shelters in the fragile husks of once grand buildings. The industrious nature of the Brettish is clearly evident as, without any outside direction, people have begun to clear streets and shore up old structures, working in unison to bring the city back to life. While even the most basic amenities are unavailable, it has been healing for the survivors to work towards building a new home.

But Melton isn't the only place to see the Brettish invasion. Earlier in the week naval forces occupied the ruins of Fort Irons, an old Nova English sea fortress on West Sandwich island. Military command deemed the fort salvageable and suitable for the development of a new base of operations for the Brettish fleet, having some of the basic infrastructure already in place. Other locations to see settlement include Bell Rock, April Island and Ersenil on Duras. Most of these locations have been settled not by direction from the government but simply as the first port of landing for survivors coming in civilian ships.

A staggering number of vessels, far beyond what officials originally estimated, have begun to land on the various islands that comprise the Skerries. Ships as small as dilapidated speedboats, up to large ocean liners, are appearing loaded with survivors, many often on the verge of starvation, medical emergency, or some combination of both. With the navy already hard-pressed to protect vessels on their journey from the Home Isles to the Skerries, it is of little surprise that many have made landfall in random locations. It has made providing humanitarian relief an ongoing issue, as diverting food and medical aid to such a dispersed population has proven extremely taxing on the state's resources. Thankfully both Jingdaoese and Nova English aid continues to assist in this endeavor. With assistance from those navies, relief goods are able to be transported to these new settlements. For her part, the Queen is wrangling with village governments, long outside of any jurisdiction, as they cope with the influx of new people and how best to administer these towns as they grow.
