Dark Age Descending

After the plague had ravished the land, the survivors made certain to finish the devastation. Those who did not die of disease and starvation turned to looting and pillaging. Rogue bands of mercenaries, raving lunatics, thieves, rapists, murderers. The few good souls banded together under King Rivers, making a stand in the oldest part of Brettania, Willowshire. The Great Willow, still standing after countless millennia, became a beacon of hope for those who remembered the days of prosperity, the Golden Age of the Brettish Empire. But it was a dream tortured by the ever-present shadow of darkness.

As the land burned, so did the centuries of technology. First the electricity died, and with it modern medicine. Next the petrol ran out, and with that went the machines. As older generations died or were killed, memory of science died with them, and the people gradually returned to simpler times. A modern infrastructure can support a much greater population than a simpler one, and so more scores of people died, and nature began to retake her long-lost kingdom. Cities crumbled and the wolves fed greedily; their howls rippling through the night. Brettania died while Willowshire clung to the bosom of the land, walling itself in from the horrors lurking in the darkness. The Willowii continued to fight with the surrounding tribes, neither gaining nor losing ground.

These times became known as the Dark Ages. And during dark times arose dark kingdoms, vying for power over the ragged and tired lands of Brettania. The Saxvenii Clans to the north retook their ancient lands, driving out those who did not belong to one of the old tartans. The south did not fare as well, falling into the hands of those descended from looters. Welded together by the brutish King Morgrieve, they established themselves on the Isle of Doyle calling themselves the Calderii. From this stronghold they took by force the isles of Cornwallis and Watson, putting any resistance to the fire. While raiding the mainland the Calderii have not been able to establish a permanent foothold, warring constantly with the Hartii clans.

As four clans vie for control of Brettania, the Isles remain clouded in a pall of smoke and pitch, the stench of burning bodies still hanging upon the air. Will the country be forever doomed to these Dark Ages, or will a hero save the land from this doom?
