[Hockey] Floria vs Mercury (04/05)

From Hub.Mn

Mercury's preparation for defending their MHL World Championships title saw them take on another of the strongest hockey nations on Micras, the newly-renamed Floria, having had their previous game against Qavaqaqqaqqaniitqeqertaq called off. Mercury's last game was an away defeat to Craitland, whereas the Florians came into the game off the back of a strong 9-2 win against newly-promoted Lakkvia. It was Mercury that made the first impact on the game, getting onto the scoresheet after just 4 minutes when a Willis shot from the point was tipped into the top corner of the net by Fraser. Floria had a chance to respond when they went to the powerplay, after Callum Black was called for tripping, but were back to even strength again, when Sharp was unfortunate to receive a high-stick call. Thomas Garnett was called into action numerous times, including a spectacular behind-the-back save when Kane was left open on the back post. Mercury had a brief period of pressure towards the back end of the period, but a misplaced pass by Weeks ensured they only remained a single goal up at the interval.

The Florians were back on the attack again early in the second, forcing a couple of saves from Garnett, but again being unable to find the net. Jourdain hit the post with a powerful slap shot, which saw the puck go careering out of play, relieving the pressure on Mercury's defensive line. Mercury had their second powerplay of the game following a boarding call against Carlson, and Mercury struck straight from the resulting face-off to double their advantage through Gardiner. It could have been 3-0 with two minutes to go, when the puck went into the net off Shaw, but he was judged to have kicked the puck in.

Floria finally found a way back into the game, grabbing a breakaway goal when Miller didn't get enough on his pass. Kane was able to grab the puck and race down the ice, where he was able to find a chasing Byers to blast it into the net. They were back on the powerplay again shortly after, when Chambers was called for interference, and with Harrison taking exception, both he and Chambers received two minutes for roughing. Floria managed to pepper Garnett's goal with shots, but he was equal to them, plucking pucks out of the air that he really had no right to save, and again, the Florian side struggled to break down the wall. They found themselves at a two-goal disadvantage again, with Davidsen finding a gap to squeeze the puck into. Chambers was back in the penalty box again with six minutes to go, but again, Garnett's heroics kept them out in front. The Florians took their time-out with two and a half minutes to go, pulling Jarry out of the net to desperately try to get back into the game, and almost did so through Boyd, whose shot was cleared off the line by Chambers after the puck snuck underneath Garnett. They continued to press, but were unlucky to see Kane's powerful shot deflect off Garnett's blocker and straight to an open Fraser, who was able to direct the puck into the empty net to seal the victory.
