Silent As The Grave

All is silent in Leichenberg. The question is; why? The principality was once a bustling necropolis of the undead, but recently things have gone awry, and only those with a heartbeat still move about the land. Liches everywhere seem to have returned to their graves with little to no fanfare or forewarning. Indeed, the phenomena swept the land so quickly that by the time it was evident what was occurring, it was too late to find a lich about and ask them pointedly. This has left things in a bit of a [sic] lurch.

With the ruling lich government of Leichenberg in absentia the neighboring principalities of Bretalyon and Steeria have moved in (with blessing from the Grand Prince) to help maintain order. With vastly depopulated necropoli dotting the land it has left the few remaining human residents in a surreal situation. Access to public services and utilities have been cut off, simply due to the lack of anyone at the helm. Thus neighboring communities have sent troops of soldiers and volunteers to help staff essential functions, such as power plants, wastewater treatment, hospitals and so forth. The Samaritan efforts of the Knights have been especially helpful.

In the meantime the government is investigating the disappearance of the liches and is desperately trying to determine the cause of their apparent return to the grave. Is it some sort of religious rite? Perhaps something with their natural chemistry that requires a "downtime" to "re-charge"? These and many other what-ifs are populating the minds of both investigators and the public. But the gravest question of all is: will the liches return?
