[LEL] Dignitaries beg the Emperor!

Post by Jonas »

A small delegation of Leylstadters stood in front of the golden gate. One of the men, was Nicholas Windsor-des Vinandy. While not very famous, the attendants who had some knowledge of politics would recognise him as the Duke of the small duchy, called Leylstadt. In front of the man and his delegation stood a handful of guards. The sunflower emblem on their uniform reminded everyone that those men belonged to the 1st "Golden Flower" Banner Brigade, the prestigious palace guard. They seemed unimpressed by the delegation, but nodded that they could enter. Too many visitors these days... the prosperous rule of the Chidao Emperor had led to an influx of foreigners to come in the grace of the Heavenly Light. Not long ago it was a guy from the MTO, now it was this man who reminded the guard of a Badaweian.

"Enter, zhu. One of the stewards is awaiting your arrival."

Shen Chidao was not surprised when the Leylstädter stood at the gates of the palace. Of course, it had been four years since they had been cordially invited to pay tribute, that was a point he would like to raise later. The head steward carefully led Duke Nicholas to one of the reception areas, where they could discuss matters of tribute, and after that, possible matters of discussion.

"Honourable... err, zhu... steward Shen...," the Duke seemed unsure how to proceed. He had once been a shrewd businessman, making deals with the devil to achieve his dream: ruling his own country. Now, he was reduced to a nervous remainder of the proud figure he once was. Even the splendour of the reception area - while simple for Jingdaoese standards - had made him increasingly nervous.

"We - the Leylstadters - are faced with nature's wrath. The last few weeks, heavy rain has resulted in the drowing of hundreds of our citizens, fertile land,... Some preach the end of our nation, as even our capital is in danger of drowning. Some religious orders proclaim that we have angered the gods..."

André Vales, a conquistador, explorer and well known with Jingdaoese habits, coughed for the first time since they were seated and interfered: "Apologies to the Duke. He's a man with his heart in the right place, zhu Shen, but he is - as you can see - currently in shock."

André took out a small piece of paper and laid it down on the table which separated the delegation from the steward. A silence fell. Shen Chidao sipped from a cup of tea, while waiting patiently for the man to proceed. André Vales was pretty sure that the man in front of him was already well aware about the situation in Leylstadt.

"Time is of the essence, zhu. While our good duke says that some think we angered the gods, we also have many who believe that the lack of tribute has offended the Son of Heaven, your divine Heavenly Light." André didn't show his own thoughts on it. It was not like that even mattered right now. "While we have been neglecting our duties to the Heavenly Court, we would want to establish a strong bound with the Emperor's Court. In return we would like your help to solve our little water problem..."

Hearing about the desperation of the Leylstädter people, the head steward could hardly suppress a smile. These foreigners were right where he wanted them, down and begging for their life. Proud people could be respected, useful were they almost never. Only when they have nothing left to lose, can they be remade in the pure shape nature itself demands.

"A moment, I'll be right back." he said and disappeared into the Sifang Suweiai. There wasn't a session at the moment, but there was a file of plans for vassal states and he browsed through them. He selected a few and brought these to the emperor, to pick one out.

The head steward returned.

"While I was gone, I have gone to the meteorological institute and I have been informed that Leylstadt cannot be saved, it was a silly place to build a nation. However, out of his endless generosity and good will, the emperor has authorised me to assist you in resurrecting the duchy in another region of Apollonia. The empire will care for the transport of all your goods and valuables, other conditions will be announced to you in due time."

The man who once had been an explorer sighed. Of course, the Jing had known this would happen a long time ago. André had warned the duke years back that the risk existed that this would happen. Now they were at the mercy of the Jingdaoese. Anyhow, he had done his job: perhaps the new lands could bring back his sense of adventure.

Duke Nicholas seemed to stare to the map which was lying in front of him. His country, his dream, would be moved... he was saved, his people were saved, but at what cost?

"I thank His Divine Majesty and will prepare my fellow Leylstadters for this move..." mumbled the beaten duke, while kowtowing. :kowtow:
