THE UNIVERSITY POLICY ON ASSESSMENT AND MARKING

1. During a degree students will undertake a full range of assessments to test their understanding of the subject matter. The purposes of the assessment procedure is to: 1) offer students the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of the subject matter; 2) offer yet another opportunity to learn as the reading, research,
and writing involved in each assessment constitute a learning process.
2. The University adopts the following assessment methods: essays; projects; dissertations; written exams; oral exams; practical work experiences;
3. Each module must be assessed by at least three different assessment method, and each assessment method must count at least 20% towards the module's final mark.
4. Assessed work produced by students must be assessed based on its academic merit only.
5. Assessed work produced by students shall be assessed impartially and without any regard for their past or current performance on any modules.
6. Assessed work produced by students shall be assessed by at least two University staff members. If there is a difference in the mark awarded of less than 5%, the student shall be rewarded the higher mark. If there is a difference in the mark awarded of 5% or more, a third staff member shall assess the work, until two or more staff members award marks in the 5% range.
7. Students may not dispute their awarded mark on academic ground.
8. Each assessed work shall be marked following a marking criteria as follows: 0-40%, the student will be awarded 0% for the overall assessment. 40% - 95%, the student will be awarded the respective mark; 96-100%, the student will be awarded 100%.
9. Assessed work must be marked within a five day timeframe from the submission deadline.
10. An Overall Module Average is the average mark of all modules a student must pass to graduate successfully. A student's OMA must be above 60% to graduate, with no individual module below 50%.
11. Upon their graduation, a student may be awarded an Excellent Distinction if their OMA is above 95%; an Outstanding Distinction if their OMA is above 85%; a Distinction if their OMA is above 80%; a Merit if their OMA is above 70%; or a Pass if their OMA is 70% or less.
12. Students awarded an Excellent Distinction shall receive a Platinum Tile with their own name and years of attendance on the University's Path of Knowledge. Students awarded an Outstanding Distinction shall receive a Golden Tile with their own name and years of attendance on the University's Path of Knowledge.
