Shirekeep Redevelopment Scratchpad

Damaged and/or destroyed during and post-Crisis:
-Cedrist Temple destroyed (not once, but apparently thrice); on first occasion, with accompanying severe-to-total destruction of area south and west of the Temple, including parts of Raynor Village and the Old City, and moderate damage to other surrounding areas.
-SARTRE destroyed by arson purification efforts by the Biological Containment Corps, with accompanying severe-to-moderate fire damage throughout the Hub and the Yardistani Quarter.
-Severe-to-total destruction of through most of the Commercial District, due to proximity to the obliteration of Mattlore Devious Airport; Shirerithian Mercantile Exchange, Temple of the Machine God, and Lamifo Corporation building still standing, but badly damaged.
-Severe damage to area between the Temple and the Imperial Judex, including to the south end of the Judex, due to heavy fighting in the area.
-Severe damage to most of the island west of the Judex and Temple of Mors, due to heavy fighting in the area.
-Moderate damage to the heart of the Old City near the river, due to heavy fighting in the area.
-Moderate damage to the Landsraad Building and immediate surrounds, including near-complete unroofing, due to proximity to the obliteration of Mattlore Devious Airport.
-Moderate damage to the Prefectoral Palace during battle.
-Moderate damage extending throughout large swathes of the city, including nearly all of Metzlershire, the west and northeast of the Old City, the south and east of Northshire, portions of the Landsraad District, the Hub, and the Yardistani Quarter.
-Light damage to the Temple of Mors; the temple's island was isolated from most attacks when the priests destroyed the bridges.
-Light damage to the north and east fringes of John Metzler III University.
-Light damage to the House of Sakat, the Museum of Fine Arts, the Mogbeth Theater, the Temple of the Quintessences, the Lodge of Mischievous Intent, and the Raynor Mausoleum.
-Sporadic damage throughout the city.

Status of damage to the south of the city, particularly the Audente, Boreal, and Treesian Quarters, is not yet sufficiently documented; input from veterans of the Corridor of Liberation is sought.

Status of damage to the northern fringe of Northshire near the Reynardine Wall is also sought.
Information and notes:
-Fifty years after the Crisis, most of the remaining population of the city clustered around the Keep and the Landsraad and the area in between. Considering the Prefectural Palace's role in civil administration during this period, possibly it too would have had living areas spring up nearby.
-As the most damaged parts of the Old City would lie in the area noted above, one could envision slums or similar areas persisting there for a long while; they would start out in a poor state, with people living in shattered ruins, and as people poured back into the city it would be quickly overcrowded.
-Alternatively, or possibly at a later stage (after the Old City had been reconstructed), the destroyed Commercial District could take on this role. Such skyscrapers as are left could be made into ad hoc apartment buildings. Proximity to Shirekeep's docks (see below) could add to the seedy character of the area.
-Destruction of the Commercial District gives room for redevelopment. Possibly rebuild and expand the docks to complement/compete with Cabbagefall across the river.
-Possibly build the Cedrist Temple in a new location, to avoid the further wrath of the gods; the island west of the Judex/Temple of Mors would be a good location, given the destruction of existing buildings there (possibly site the temples of the individual gods there as well). The old location could be ceremonially exploded into a crater and turned into a nice memorial lake (fed from nearby canal) and surrounding park.
-The Landsraad building stands on the site of the former Palace of the Alexanders; the old palace still stood during the reign of Leto I (b752 - b710), who gave the site to the nobles of Shireroth, but at some point afterward was demolished and the current building erected in its place.
-Explanation of the structure of the Reynardine Wall to be found here.
Random ideas and things to do:
-Topographic map of the city. In progress already. (I've been preparing.)
-Origin of the University buildings. I find its position directly opposite Tempus Keep, formerly Fort Tempus, compelling, as is its own vaguely fortlike shape. Perhaps the two were part of the same defensive strategy? Together they'd make a pretty formidable obstacle to ships trying to access the West Elwynn... or to leave it, for that matter. The University as an institution is much older than Tempus (which was built by Gaelen IV, r. 4228 - 4337), but possibly it was previously housed elsewhere? Dunno, the position of the University has been consistent on all previous maps.
-Complete reorganization of the city into new wards? Allow some of them to be used as ethnic neighborhoods, maybe, inhabited by groups from across Shireroth? The designations of some of the old quarters are probably long out of date.
-Repurposing of the buildings whose tenants no longer exist. Are there still Soloralists around to use the Temple of the Quintessences? Does the Small Commonwealth still exist?
-Public transit system, possibly in the form of a subway. As a corollary to this, perhaps something of a subterranean level could be added to parts of the city; especially if the Deep Singers are involved with the tunneling, this could become "their" ward.
-I adapted the scale Octy used for his work on Raynor's Keep to measure stuff in the city itself. Judging by this, the previous map shows buildings which are pretty damn big. While buildings hundreds of meters to a side aren't unheard of in the macroworld, most of them are very special-purpose or involve mass housing projects; it seems odd, in that context, that some buildings should be as large as they are, particularly some of the temples. This could be resolved in several ways: 1) we really do just build things that monumental (after all, witness the Reynardine Wall); 2) the size of the buildings was exaggerated on the previous map for visibility reasons; 3) as with Raynor's Keep, what appears to be one large building on the old map may be shown to be a large complex of smaller buildings.
-Straightening of some of the major thoroughfares, and possibly widening. At one point I was sure that the roads, like the buildings, were of exaggerated size, but the scale shows that in fact even some of the widest are actually pretty modest by modern standards; for example, the Kaiser's Boulevard is, estimating on the generous side, 20 meters wide, and probably more like 18 or 19... not much wider than the busy sections of one of our local roads. By constrast, US 40 near where I live never gets much below 30 and is in many cases more like 35.

So, this is where I'll be collecting thoughts and information related to the mapping and reconstruction of Shirekeep. If I update anything in the first post, I'll notify everyone in a reply to this thread. If you see anything I've gotten wrong or missed, or if you have some other idea I should be considering, by all means reply here.

Regarding the southern districts: there would have been a lot of leveling of unsound structures and the repurposing of what remained for temporary housing for survivors. Nothing too specific.

And boy was it fun to reread the Prefectural Palace post.

Oh, yes, but I sort of wanted to get more of an idea of what activity happened that could've made structures unsound there. Although that area would've been affected by the Corridor of Liberation, the actual posts about it sort of jumped from the area of insertion at the Reynardine Wall, to the Prefectural Palace, to the Keep. Did they not encounter much resistance in between (which is what was implied by the associated map: just a bunch of isolated holdouts for the Apollonian Guard)? Maybe just the occasional cabbagehead attack? If so, I might just assume that the battle for the Keep involved damage to the adjacent areas in the Treesian and Audente Quarters.

...also, added a bunch of informational links, musings, and ideas to the top post.

Extra points if a temple to the Safirian goddesses ends up being/having been built somewhere :geek:

General destruction during the chaos. Burnt out buildings, etc. Though yes, there would be pockets of cabbage heads that I'm sure the Elwynnese would have met with their usual mercy.

I have some ideas and will put them up later. Minutiae, of course, barely worthy of your attention!

I'd like to request new ministry facilities. As of Imperial Decree 631, the ministries were given space within Raynor's Keep, due to the destruction and safety concerns at the time.

Oh yeah, the idle rich holed up in the Lodge of Mischievous Intent, so I hope that survived.

Yep. Still musing over whether to site them around the area the ministries had previously been in, but one way or another I'll make sure they're included.

I had seen that, actually. Possibly I may ask to change its apparent size on the map later for reasons of scale, but it should have survived, though I imagine the outside looks rather shot up.

Could I possibly request a Ziggurat surrounded by Flak Towers as a design for the new MoMA Main Building... citing certain architectural influences *cough*

If the Ministry of Information is be located near the University, I may be tempted to design the university grounds.

I had some ideas for the University myself... but then, they're kind of general. If you wouldn't mind me bouncing them off you to see if they'd be worth incorporating, I'd be happy to let you do the design.

...good grief, Ardy. All right, all right. =p

Your map has been the basis for later to build on. Without that great work, you know what we would have had...

For ease of reference, the diameter of the colosseum has been reset at 240 metres.

Seconded/Thirded/Whatevered. That map has shaped the very course of recent Benacian political history, and its successor maps will continue to do so.
