Victory in Brettania

Post by Ira Altain »

Benjamin Rivers arrive in Mountbatten like so many other refugees, as an expatriate fleeing an oppressive regime. Like his father and grandfather before him, Thomas and Arthur Rivers, he was a patriot. But Brettania had become overrun by the Avalonians, and he had sought the aid of fellow revolutionaries. This brought him across the ocean to Benacia, where he found men of like mind in the soldiers-for-hire known as the Sons of the Mountain, and later as the Mountbatten Republic. The Mountbatteners, as it would turn out, were comprised primarily of fellow Brettanians, who like himself had fled the regime in order to continue the fight elsewhere, or at the very least to die as free men. Therefore it came as a surprise to him when Ira Altain, the Governor of the Republic, proposed an invasion of Brettania; a complete liberation of the island from the enemy.

As heir to the enigmatic Lordship of Greater Willow, Rivers was descended from the most noble of bloodlines, tracing its origins back to the days of New Brittania. Not only was his blood of noble virtue, but the Rivers family had become one of the foremost patriarchies in Brettania, patronizing the arts and leading grand military expeditions. Thus he was a clear choice to grant assistance to the Republic when they invaded Westminster.

After returning to Sherrinford, Rivers was able to gather local support more easily than he imagined possible. As it would turn out, the Willowers were eager to see a return to the heyday of Brettania, and readily joined in the formation of a local militia to fight the remnants of the Avalonian government, which had already begun to crumble. Within a few weeks he had gathered thousands of armed citizenry to his side, and Greater Willow once again emerged as a force unto itself, a beacon of Brettania’s past greatness. When Republican forces landed in Westminster, they were quickly joined by the Willowers from the north. From there it was a simple matter to begin fanning out over the rest of Brettania. Within a few short months the remaining Avalonian forces had withdrawn, leaving Mountbatten and Greater Willow victorious, and Brettania finally liberated.

With victory the remaining armed forces and citizenry of Mountbatten began the process of resettlement on Brettania, occupying vacant lands in the south that had been emptied by the withdrawal of the Avalonians. Clean-up crews began picking up the pieces in Westminster, and Parliament was reopened for the first time in decades. The city began to shine as a capitol once again. As the bells tolled they heralded the birth of a new nation.
