The Speakership

Post by Kenneth Collingridge »

Honourable Members,

Having poured over our Instrument of Government, it seems imperative that Parliament, as supreme governing body of the Commonwealth, requires a presiding officer to give it direction and ensure its sovereignty. If it would be amenable to the House, I would like to put myself forward as a candidate for the post of Speaker of Parliament.

It would be my goal: (1) to establish more detailed rules of order for our proceedings, (2) to enhance the history and traditions of this body within the greater cultural development of this nation, and (3) to provide a strong and vigorous forum for the great concerns and issues of the day. The free exercise of political liberty is, in my view, the very hallmark of being Brettish, and I would hope to provide some small contribution towards strengthening our system of government, and through that, the unity of this Commonwealth.

I humbly submit this proposal before my right honourable friends and colleagues of this noble House.
Rt. Hon. Kenneth Collingridge, MP
Speaker of the Brettish Parliament

Honourable Members,

I thank my right honourable friend for his nomination and indication of support. I firmly believe that an active Parliament is the key to an active nation. If the representatives of the people cannot drive the engine of state, it will be hard to expect the citizenry to assist in the hard, thankless work of development, whether cultural, economic, or political. Let Brettania become a symbol to the world that the rule of law, not rule by force, is the cornerstone of our civilization.

I second the nomination of the acting Lord Protector. Will the House allow me to express our gratitude to Mister Kenneth Collingridge for his well founded commitments to serving our House and upholding its sovereignity? Being led by such strong beliefs in parliamentary democracy, I am sure he has the quality needed to preside over us in a just and impartial manner.

Order, order!

(Sorry, I couldn't help myself.)

I thank my right honourable friends for the great honour and privilege that they are bestowed upon me. It is my sincere hope to assist in shaping this house into the envy of the world, and that I may fulfill that most weighty of commissions, that I shall have "neither eyes to see nor tongue to speak in this place but as the House is pleased to direct me, whose servant I am here."
