Clouds gathering above Kildare

Post by Jonas »

Taodosius looked with a grim face to the Kildarian coast. In front of him was the skyline of Apollo City, better known to him as the legendary city of Apollonium. To his left and right he saw ships: some with cannons, others nothing more than fishing boats. The ship he was on was an old yacht, that he had bought with some of the gold he had taken with him through the Pangean Gate and that was originally meant as a present to the Kaiser. Thousands of his servants, loyal soldiers and clerics had joined the Autokrator on his trip to the 'Old World', as was Micras called by them, to celebrate the admission of Pangeus into the Imperial Republic. His wife, still injured after a diplomatic accident and three of his children were, at this moment also on this world, but in Shirekeep.

The celebrations had come to an abrupt end when Maraguan and Myxosean scientists had brought him the bad news: the Gate had closed and no connection could be made again with his World. Taodosius had been confused and angry over the past few months: what had happened? And more important: what would happen from now on? His people had fled Micras, with the help of science and the Gods, years before and had reconnected through the Gate.

Now that was gone and they, together with some thousands South Batavians and Myxoseans who had accompanied him, had lost their home.

It was not until some Kildarian and South Batavian nobles and priests had brought him a visit in Shirekeep, that he came up woth a new plan: they had been clear about their intentions: the priests wanted the expansion of the catologian fate and mentioned that the Magister of the Holly Church had been searching for a new home, now Zhongjing was unprotected on all flanks. He had found that new home in Apollo City, as the catologian faith was very popular in the Kildarian parts of the Empire, but the representatives of the Magister had mentioned that a 'pro-catologian leader' could make things even more interesting.

Then there were the nobles, who were enthusiast followers of the classical Apollonian culture, which had been popular with the Kildarian elite even long before the Kaisership of Gaelen IV (who had spread Apollonian influences to the West). They hoped that Taodosius and his people would come to live in Kildare, to strengthen the Apollonian faction (as Pangean culture was originally based on it).

Taodosius had a better idea and had taken up the funds that he needed for this expedition: he had bought a small fleet, hired mercenaries to strengthen his elite guard and collected modern guns and other weaponry for his cause.
Now he was setting sail to the centre of the Kildarian society: Apollo City, seat of the Seanad.

The captain of his Myxosean Guard bowed for his Autokrator and said to him: "Your Majesty, our soldiers are ready to enter the city. The men in the City Harbour have been payed to let our fleet in, so we can properly land on the shore and march to the Seanad in government district of the city. Once we have succesfully taken the the Seanad and palace by surprise, we could force the Dutchess to give you Her power!"

The Autokrator nodded, while thinking about the many ways this expedition could become an immense failure if there weren't enough nobles present. His Apollonian sources had been clear that, because of catologian celebrations, many of the nobility were present for special sessions and the Antyan nobility would surely be in favour of a more Apollonian-focused ruler (even while they, and that was something they confessed, couldn't complain about Dutchess Ignatia).

"Give the signal to commence the operation!" he shouted, while raising his sword.

The few dock guards who weren't drunk, looked with surprised faces to the well-equipped soldiers of Taodosius. Their surprised face hadn't disappeared yet, when they already were killed in orderly fashion by some Myxoseans who had attacked the from the back.

"To the Palace and the Seanad! Kill when necessary, but show mercy to those who wish to join our cause!" shouted their leader above the music that was played throughout the city, to celebrate the long reign of Dutches Ignatia. Drunkards were pushed aside by the soldiers, who marched towards the west, in the direct of the government district.

The Seanad Guards didn't know what they saw when soldiers arose out of the party crowd. Within a fraction of a few seconds they were knocked down or had surrendered for the superior numbers.

Basil, Orare of Apollo City and organizer of the large festivities saw the soldiers march into the conference room. A smile came on his face when he saw Taodosius walk in, flanked by several of his Myxosean Guards. Some others seemed also amused and didn't look very surprised by this event. Many other representatives, however, looked shocked and scared.
Nobody had known that Basil was an Apollonist who favoured a more pro-Apollonian administration of Kildare. The festivities and his attempts to get the soldiers, even those on duty, drunk enough to not notice the invaders until it was too late, had clearly worked.

"Nobles and representatives of the Nobility of the Eastern Empire!" said Taodosius, with which he silenced all Senators, "You are all witness of the end of Ignatia's reign! From this day on, I, Taodius of the House of Myksos, will rule Kildare as the new Dutch! In my hand I hold a petition of nobles of this Realm, in which they begged me to rally against the Dutchess and bring back a strong administration, which will make an end to our weaknesses! As fervent supporter of Kildarian AND Apollonian traditions, I shall not be a barbarian conqueror, but the saviour of this Dutchy! Our armies will once again be feared, and our culture will once again be admired, as in the days of Gaelen IV! Our reborn Eastern Empire shall, as a loyal State of the Imperial Republic, bring prosperity and civilisation to the people and its leaders! Foreign threats will be destroyed, and we will once again be the centre of civilisation!"

The shocked Senators began applauding, one faster than another, but after a full minute, the room was filled with cheers. Not everyone looked enthusiast, but all knew that protests would not help, that the Dutchess would likely be arrested in the Apollonian Palace, and that the Dutchy needed unity, now a new threat had invaded the country.
