VATTNALAND BREAKS APART FOLLOWING REFERENDUM

Petersburg (Vattnaland) – Following the recent decision by the administration of Vattnaland to split the province into eastern and western counties, and to allow a referendum in the east, has resulted in the fragmentation and dissolution of Vattnaland as a viable province. The Elw majority in East Vattnaland voted overwhelmingly to join with Iserdia and Araxion, neighboring Elw communities that are not part of Amokolia’s jurisdiction. This left the west in a predicament of being a tiny fraction of its former self and in a position of no longer being sustainable independently. As such, the government of West Vattnaland opted to join Oleslaad as a county.

Independence celebrations rocked the city of Petersburg, the former Vattnalandic capital, as the Elw-dominated city was filled with parties and parades. East Vattnaland is almost entirely Elw, save for small pockets of Amokolians. Following a series of protests – some of which became violent – the Elw voted in near unanimity to leave Amokolia and join with Elwynn Proper. The administration in Anun has vowed to respect the decision of the vote, and has authenticated the results of the polls, noting that they retain their democratic rights to self-determination.

People in the west were left in a much more somber state as they were forced to cope with the loss of the east, the provincial capital, and the economic, industrial and other associated losses that were cumulative with the decision. There were no celebrations, and scores of Amokolian families who opted to leave the east rather than stay in Elwynn were welcomed quietly in cities such as Mittlere Stadt and Spring Valley. The government convened at a temporary venue in Mittlere Stadt to decide the future of the west, and it was eventually determined they would join Oleslaad. After a brief consulation with Spring Valley and Anun, the measure was approved allowing West Vattnaland to become a county within Oleslaad.

Oleslaad itself is facing a growing problem as protests by Pan-Mishalanists and leftist political groups continue to escalate. Thus far the protests have been entirely peaceful demonstrations, and only a few arrests have had to be made. However, the protests are highlighting the issue of Oleslaad’s questionable future and whether it will opt to join with Mishalan in the proposed state of “Greater Mishalan”. The local administration has not taken an official stance on this subject as of yet, despite leftist parties securing a score of victories in the regional elections. That may change with the recent consolidation of several Mishalanski and Oleslaadic parties into a leftist bloc known as the “Bear Party” that is steadily gaining popularity and momentum.

In Mishalan the situation in the southeast has deteriorated further as protests have grown more violent between the Elw of Lun Ezkaron and Amokolians. Scores of Amokolians who have opted to leave East Vattnaland following the referendum have clashed with Elw in the Mishalan Corridor west of Mishalan City. Many want to settle in this fertile delta of the river, and many Amokolians feel they have the right to do so since the area remains under Amokolian jurisdiction. The administration has come out in support of the refugees, citing it is the right of any Amokolian to settle wherever they wish within the confines of Amokolia’s borders. This decision has prompted many Elw to migrate into East Vattnaland or to cluster in Lun Ezkaron.

Anun was forced to deploy the National Guard to Mishalan to help maintain order and break up clashes between protesting groups. This marks the first actual foray the government has taken into the dispute. Even so, Anun remains quiet on the matter as the controlling hawks in the legislature continue to debate over the proper course of action. Rumors abound that the government is pressuring Mishalan to allow a referendum in Lun Ezkaron along similar lines as what was done in East Vattnaland, although many suspect this will galvanize the opposition movement and justify the objectives of the Pan-Mishalan movement.
