Plague Devastates Eiland, Mountbrettan

A potato plague has completely devastated Eiland and Mountbrettan, leaving only a fractional remnant of the population surviving. The troubles are being blamed on a potato virus that has utterly destroyed the crop - which serves as the primary staple of agricultural production in both Eiland and Mountbrettan. As a result of this crop loss, thousands have been left starving and dying, and by extension a general decline in health has caused a severe population loss. Even royalty is not immune to this tragedy, as the entire Altain family has died from the plague, leaving Eiland under the direct authority of Westminster.

In response the government has ordered the remaining population of Eiland, estimated to be as low as 10% of the original population, to be evacuated to the Brettish home isles. Eiland itself is being abandoned. As plague has spread through Mountbrettan, the area is being quarantined to prevent further outbreak.

Enraged citizens have stormed potato stores, destroying or setting fire to them, and fields of potatoes are being burned to prevent the spread of the virus. Other crops are being planted as alternatives, but with the virus having devastated crops so late in the season it will be difficult to compensate for the loss. The loss of Eiland and Mountbrettan has dealt a hard blow to the Commonwealth, essentially leaving only Great Willow standing. An emergency session of Parliament is being convened to debate the future of the Brettish state, and how best to address the effects of the plague.

OOC Note: This is me downsizing due to limited activity. New emphasis will be placed on developing Great Willow as a kingdom and the sole survivor of the potato plague.

To whom it may concern,

It brings some relief to the managers of a certain airborne pest control initiative that the pathogen currently afflicting the Brettish Commonwealth is not among said initiative's collection of biological agents. An accidental release would be most embarrassing, and indeed unshrubly.

However, said initiative is rather impressed by the virulence of this particular strain of Phytophthora infestans and would like to enquire whether samples of it could be made available to a certain body of talented biomancers in west-central Benacia for the purposes of research into a cure.

Samples can be delivered to Box 477, Her Jolliness' Dockyard Feanaustri, Port Riskai. Proper biocontainment packaging would be appreciated.

Your potatoes are in our prayers.

We would be pleased to provide samples of the plague to Minarboria for a small donation to our rebuilding efforts. =p
