NEW BRASSICOSIS OUTBREAK VERGING ON EPIDEMIC

TEL-AMOK (Amokolia) – A resurgence of the brassicosis plague has begun sweeping across northern Benacia, sparking fears that a new epidemic is on the horizon. Scientists at Fort Farde have identified a new strain of the cabbage plague that is immune to current vaccines and antibiotics. Cases have been reported in Stormark’s Gascony province, along Shireroth’s Amokolian territories, and especially throughout the independent Amokolian nation. Defense authorities have suggested that the outbreak may be linked to terrorists, but there is no confirmed evidence as of yet, and no terror organization has yet claimed responsibility for the outbreak.

The hardest-hit nation is Amokolia, where scores of people are dying in droves, leaving behind a barren wasteland where only the hardiest of people are surviving. Scientists are closely studying these survivors in hopes of developing antibodies that can be processed into antibiotics that will successfully combat the new strain. In the meantime, emergency responders have begun preparing numerous field clinics as hospitals overflow with the sick and dying. Silence reigns from Amokolia’s government where it is hinted that they have already fallen victim to the plague, and that the kingdom has fallen into an anarchic state of emergency. But they are not alone, as reports of plague have begun to filter in from Gascony and Shirerithian Amokolia, even as far east as Elwynn.

In Stormark, the island of St. Jeanne was quarantined in what the Storish government tried to mask as “routine”. Reports however have leaked to the public that the island is a veritable plague epicenter, and that the island may indeed become entirely depopulated. Reports of plague have also surfaced from nearby Ravaria and Snaeland. As is typical of Storish press and governance, they have opted to glaze over the situation, greatly minimizing the actual impact the outbreak has had on their people.

Others have not been quite so dismissive. In Shireroth, protesters rallied in several cities demanding a better medical support from the government to combat the outbreak. Joining them were several top scientists and doctors from the medical community. While the protests were peaceful, they nonetheless clearly made demands that the Imperial government take a more proactive role in preventing further loss of life. Kaiserial response to previous terror attacks has been lackluster at best, and was internationally mocked for following Storish methods of minimizing the situation. Protesters hope that the government will respond in a more realistic fashion this time, curbing the outbreak before it can decimate all of Benacia.

Given the new strain some scientists have expressed concern over potential mutations of brassicosis. Speaking with anonymity, one scientist stated, “This is an example of the plague mutating, adapting to side-step our vaccinations. Who’s to say it can’t mutate again into an even more violent strain? This is why we need better research facilities, and greater aggregation of resources between nations.” Other scientists have expressed fears that a mutation could take on different forms, affecting other plants or even animals. “A strain that infects, for example, only cows, could be devastating to countries where that animal is a vital component,” said one doctor.

As research continues, so do efforts to curb the outbreak and save infected people. Numerous relief agencies have turned up to offer assistance, and several areas are considering quarantine actions to keep the plague from spreading to southern and eastern Benacia; although this seems unlikely given the rate of transmission. This leaves a big question in the hands of the collective governments of Benacia: Will they take precautionary measures to halt the disease, or will this be the beginning of a new cabbage epidemic?
