A new banner has been unfurled in Crowsilver. The Steward, with his wife, has arrived in Hjartahom to oversee the coming battle for supremacy in Northern Apollonia. After weeks of preparation, the deployment of forces and the requisitioning of boats, the time has finally come to break the Jingdaoese blockade of Neo Patrova.

But the relief convoys coming by sea would be but one part of the coming struggle. It was time to rally the barbarians, the primitive tribesmen of Crowsilver who had hitherto enjoyed the protection of Shireroth and Goldshire but contributed nothing to its defence. Now their turn had come to perform a duty for the Imperial Republic.

Sermons had been preached on the previous Semisaday that fixated upon the cruelty, the wealth and the weakness of the Jingdaoese. Imperial Vicars assisted by handsomely remunerated local druids and shamans, had spread the word that the Jingdaoese were still weak from Jexit and ripe for plundering.

Lured by the promise of easy plunder, an army of 35,000 local savages, including militiamen, light infantry, skirmishers and woad dyed warriors from tribes, the name of whom no-one could pronounce had rallied to banners planted in Hjartahom and Fyrstavilltr.

The the notionally ruling Yfrmathr, Merthen Cadag, had been meant to give his pleasing to the expedition before its departure, but with the gold and gold coloured metal of Regina Ravaillac's personal fortune being generous distributed amongst the ranks, no-one seemed to much mind his absence.

The ESB Group meanwhile had sent commissioners out into the countryside in the weeks leading up to the departure, ordering the tribes and the peoples of Crowsilver to gather together their herds and all the provisions they would need for the long march across the ungoverned expanse of the Green to Neo Patrova. Other supplies were gathered, draught animals and wagons, and the encampments and villages of those whose men were pledged to the march were burned before thousands of wagons, carrying precious grain for Neo Patrova, started south-westwards from Fyrstavilltr.

In return for their part in rescuing Neo Patrova from famine, the tribes of Crowsilver had been promised the rights to the plunder of the Jingdaoese province of Jinkeai.

Escorting the wagons, the Krufnsilfr warriors were an odd assortment of cavalrymen riding an assortment of mules and hardy steppe ponies. These light cavalrymen were armed with a variety of ancient rifles and muskets and each one in addition carried at least one bow, and a quiver or two of arrows. These were mainly for hunting out in the green, for bullets were too valuable to be wasted on anything other than enemies. They wore little armour, a helmet, a rectangular leather-covered wickerwork shield painted vividly and a padded, quilted coat, that was surprisingly resilient. A Krufnsilfr warrior's most precious possession however was his sword, a long and straight double-edged blade used for slashing rather than thrusting, wielded with both hands it could split an unarmoured man in twain as though a knife paring the rind of a cheese.

Warfare was a central part of life in Crowsilver, and prowess in raiding was an important part of gaining and maintaining status amongst the tribal elites. For most of the tribes of Crowsilver, raiding neighbours was the warrior's principal means of acquiring that wealth and position, and the tribes sought to extend their influence over weaker neighbours. This lawlessness was normally a bane of the Goldshirian authorities, but now it would prove to be strangely useful, as the lure of foreign gold and Jingdaoese plunder that induced the tribes into an alliance to increase their own military prowess. If these warbands were led away to the south, they would become somebody else's problem - for a time at least.
