Map

Post by Ryabin Merkayastreb »

On information provided by the Count some time ago which I have only just gotten round to working on, I have drawn the following map for Suthergold on an MCSx6 scale (same as the one of Lunaris) It will be committed to the Goldshire Palace archive as the Standard Ducal Reference for the geography of this County:

Image

[OOC: Ryker, this is a one-shot thing. There will be no "I don't like X, you need to Y" - Any revisions or amendments to this map (which there probably are, as you gave me the spec a long time ago) are to be drawn by yourself for now on]

A wiki-style culture of co-contribution is more healthy than relying on individuals, and allows us all to develop our talents in different areas, whether its writing laws, writing stories, drawing maps, depicting scenes and characters (I always liked Jonas')... Hail to Ryabin Cartographex, and may the work of his students long be confused with his own!

I didn't want it looking so different in style from the map of Lunaris.

What? you know I'm a stickler for details. Though I'll admit, my draft looked dreadful, Ryabin even said it looked like Picasso threw up on it.

I think (to put it lightly) you win more admiration being a perfectionist about stuff you make, rather than about what other people make, especially stuff other people make for you.

Seems to me that you don't have the right to criticise the work of other people (that they make for you as a favour) if you can't do anything yourself.

Otherwise people might get annoyed with you.

I present, for the edification of the curious, the entire specification I had to work with:
Image
Very messy, I know. Here are the names of the districts/regions. (green-dotted areas are forests)

Light red: Kingsland
Dark brown-red: C.R.
Orange: Self-governing bodies Sutherland and Underwall (orange squares are temples to the Pantheon)
Light gray: The Hoarfrost Hills
Black: Secret facilities, shh.
Light brown: Asantelian
Red: Greenwinter
Purple: Orenthaven (with hypothetical settlement of New Harbor)
Grey-blue: Everstone
Ugly (green?): The Roaming Hills
Navy-blue squares: hypothetical forts
All greens: plantations (hypothetical settlement of High-Harvest)

P.S. Underwall, Greenwinter Forest, KingsGate, and the Temples are all holy grounds. Again, sorry for the mess.
See a mention of the Lunaris map in there anybody? I don't.

Did I draw this map as a act of goodwill, investing a decent amount of time and effort? Yes.

Did I receive payment of any kind for my services? No.

Did I get even the faintest glimmer of recognition of the trouble I took to draw this? No.

Will there be any expressed after I post this? Probably.

Will it mean anything? No.

Is it true what they say about kids these days and their breathtakingly sociopathic sense of entitlement? Well, I'm beginning to believe it.

BTW - If you ever decide to offer up your map services, I would be interested in contracting you to do some work for my projects, with an accompanying justified effusion of gratitude.

Ryabin, I'm terribly sorry for not commending your breathtaking rendition of my eye-gouging pool of organized ink-sludge. I could have sworn that I had thanked you profusely for your generous efforts and success. Please, consider this post my thanks with interest. I hope that, one day, my skills may benefit you as yours have me.

As for the other posts, maybe I'm just tired but I can't tell whether or not you are attacking me. If you are, I understand it was incredibly childish of me to ask for help like this and I can form no excuses. But please try to understand that I have a lot going on at home and this hobby cannot be at the top of my to-do list right now. Thank you.

Inability to contribute due to time constraints is understandable, and I had no problem with your request for assistance. Responding to such assistance with flippant dismissal in the absence of any other acknowledgement is less forgivable.

I advise you to take good, hard notice of Benkern and Jack's observations. If you didn't come here with a moral code, I suggest you learn one quickly if you want to be respected as a Shirerithian - by anybody, let alone me. Right now I'd say you're even more insufferably brash than the Kaiser, and that takes some doing. If you carry on as you have, you'll haemorrhage friends and be buried in enemies in no time.

I don't ask you to bow down and kiss my feet every time I do something for you, but at least a restraint of your inner spoiled brat would be appreciated. Silence would have been better than what you said. So if you genuinely can't say anything nice, as countless mothers and teachers would say, it's best not to say anything at all.

So you just had to tweak the colors a little and basically Ryker did all the work? =p

Playing Rrakanychan's Advocate, are we?

With all due credit to Ryker, the internal features were indeed his idea entirely - though I might add that the coast/border outline he used as a canvas was my work, done solely for the purpose.

Enough. Thank you, Ryabin, for all of your hard work. Thank you, Rasmus, for trying to help but I think we should all take a break from this discussion.

I really feel it's time we dropped this. Now.

We've had a frank exchange of views from which we can all learn something...but let us not forget that there isn't a person in this hobby who hasn't screwed up at some point.

That is a seriously smart map though, Krasniy. :up1:

I don't know anyone who was born with amazing map-making skills, Ryker: everyone has to start somewhere. I don't know about Picasso, but I happen to think your draft works surprisingly well as a piece of modern art! In fact. I'd like to purchase it for display in Lichkeep... ;)
