Keeping up with the Poldarks: A Chronicle of the MFR

Post by Captain Poldark »

5848 ASC – Ergonia notifies the State of Talenore of its intention to monitor its naval forces and shipping in international waters; Talenore does not respond favourably to the news...
5855 ASC – Deployment of the Ergonian Navy to The Skerries, Northern Eura and Talenore
5857 ASC – Exchange of fire with Passio-Corum at Shahpur, Northern Eura, loss of the Melanje
5858 ASC – Dispute over arrears of pay for Ergonian Navy personnel on deployment resolved by complete and utter destruction of Ergonia; no further remittances, no more rebates and no refunds
5861 ASC - Articles of Governance and Association issued founding the Maritime Free Republic
5863 ASC – Trade relations established with barbarous tribes of the Euran interior as a prelude to mounting a landward expedition to salvage the beached wreck of the Melanje by a shore party left by Captain Maxwell-Darcy of the Harkalegar who was conducting armed-trading on the Northern Coast of Eura
5864 ASC - New Zimian (Passio-Corum) Air Force bombed the wreckage of the Melanje to prevent salvage
5869 ASC – Memorandum of Understanding between the Maritime Free Republic and the Holy Empire of Jingdao; vigorous armed-trading undertaken on the small Island of Pulosker (Natopian Skerry Isles) by Captain Maxwell-Darcy of the Harkalegar
5870 ASC – Failure of the first Festival de las Armadas against the Maritime Free Republic
5909 ASC – Failure of the second Festival de las Armadas against the Maritime Free Republic; spasm of disproportionate activity occasioned by the advent of the Maritime Free Republic punctuates the seemingly protracted death rattle of the MTO
5918 ASC – Maritime Free Republic submitted to Jingdao, claimed as spoils and incorporated into the territories administered by the Gong Federation; erroneous attribution of victory by Passio-Corum to its own pork-barrelling defence contractors, captive New Zimian marines and hostages executed in retribution by Captain Maxwell-Darcy of the Harkalegar, 49 corpses nailed to crucifixes and floated into Shahpur Harbour
5919 ASC – By the gracious intercession of the Emperor, the Associates of the Maritime Free Republic were settled on the obscure island of Dromosker in the Skerry Isles just north of a larger island ruled by Passio-Corum; vigorous armed-trading ensued. Unfortunately in that same year, after the disappearance of the third relief expedition to go in search of the initial exploration party, the island interior of Dromosker was discovered to be comprised of lush verdant, bordering on impenetrable jungle, largely inhabited by 8ft tall malevolent flightless birds and, no-less reassuringly, the Dromosker – who were somehow as surprised to find outsiders on their island as the maritime traders were to find the indigenous population still alive; a cycle of head-hunting, scalping, forest fires managed through the generous application of napalm and a series of unfortunate incidents involving cultural misunderstandings and cooking pots ensued until at last a truce was agreed. The indigenous population retreated deeper into the jungle back to their cult and religious centre of Calēkhōpraksis whilst the settlers remained in the collection of cabins down by the small creek that constituted their new town, maintaining a constant vigil whilst now surrounded by a stout palisade, motion detection scanners and generously placed claymore mines.
5983 ASC / 215 EGA – Destruction of Jingdaoese Cities by optimally functioning Obedience Machine, loss of contact with mainland; conversion to EGA Calendar in memory of the Heavenly Light's passing from the world (and also to compensate for the effects of exotic matter contained in the radioactive fallout on chrono-dilation and general relativity)
216 EGA – Interruption to trade, famine, skirmishes with Passio-Corum marines and natives in the interior combined to make for an unfortunate year. The Servile, Hostages and other Persons Taken at Sea sent inland to establish plantations for growing corn, pineapples, bananas and potatoes in an attempt to avert famine; promise of manumission for those plantation settlers who survive to the year 226 EGA
217 EGA - another unfortunate year; civil war amongst the natives results in traders being obliged to defend against refugees, raiding parties, and raiding parties trying to get at refugees from neighbouring tribes. Amongst this there is comes a revolt of the servile Vanafolk who had been taken from fishing boats over the previous years and resettled in the interior; overseers brutally hacked to bloody-shreds by shrieking demented machete-wielding Valkyries. Some of the revolting servile escaped into the jungle to take their chances whilst others – in a desperate attempt to get to the traders boats and freedom – attempted a night assault on the New Town, skilfully they had located and disabled the motion sensors along their line of attack and were only thwarted by chance when a startled goose blundered into the path of a claymore – the resultant explosion waking the town and rousing the sentries to a state of alarm exacerbated as they found themselves confronted by emaciated Vikings with blades poised to strike. A vicious firefight ensued as the perimeter guards were rushed and their guns turned on the startled townsfolk who were venturing out of their cabins. Only the swift intervention of the Captain-Generals flotilla whose crews raced ashore under the cover of cannon of the warships prevented a general massacre of the Associate-Traders and their families. As it was forty-five men, women and children were killed outright whilst another sixty-three sustained severe injuries. The insurgents however had been broken and either fought on until they were killed where they stood, or else they were hunted down amongst the alleyways and ditches of the town right up until the last were found with their backs to that very same palisade they had scaled to begin their murderous assault. Quarter was neither sought nor given. All told twenty-five Vanafolk had perished in the night action and the Maritime Free Republic had learnt a bitter lesson, no more Stormarkers or Elwynnese were to be drafted to fill the ranks of the Servile, any taken alive in future would be returned directly to the sea.
218 EGA – News received of the purification of Norfolk by Admiral Ross; contact re-established with government of restored Jingdaoese Empire. Further risings amongst those Servile who had waited for the Vanafolk to be killed before trying their own luck; revolts put down but interruptions to the harvest occasioned by the killings presaged a renewed famine. To once more avert starvation, Captain Maxwell-Darcy of the Harkalegar and Captain Roderick of the MFRS Random assembled their crews and any other volunteers they could muster to lead a daring overland march to the Dromosker settlement of Calēkhōpraksis, a collection of huts built on platforms on stilts which lies in the middle of a volcano lake. Fortunately, under the guise of helping the tribal chieftain En Lugal Can supplant his bitter rival En Lugal Lek they were able to obtain canoes and rowers to take them across to the natives cult centre and there inflicted a remarkable slaughter on the population. Under the cover of this carnage they were able to liberate whatever took their fancy from the food stores. Roderick and Maxwell-Darcy left En Lugal Can to organise his cannibalistic feast in celebration of the conquest of Calēkhōpraksis and, reasoning that the victorious chief was likely to be glutted with Long Pork for a long time into the future they made a point of marching back to the New Town along a route that encompassed his villages – these they burned and gathered up all the women, children and pigs their men could corral and marched them back to the New Town in triumph, pausing occasionally to make a sport of shooting down the furious tribesmen who pursued them.

The fortunes of the Maritime Free Republic, going into 219 EGA were thereby much revived.
