The Imperial State of Constancia: Benevolent hereditary dictatorship, constitutional monarchy, laissez-faire technocracy, aristocratic corporate state, organized crime family syndicate or liberal autocracy? It depends on the day.

On this rock

After Possession Point

He spent the night aboard the Icebox, having taken over the largest lounge as a joint command center and office, discussing initial plans with the leaders and specialists. A token honor guard had remained ashore, protecting the flag and flagstaff and serving as the defense force of the place.

It had once been called Hatrecht, which didn't quite fit the name of the capital of this latest province of the Free and Associative Kingdom.

He reviewed the plans once more. It had also once been called Rasal, part of the Gralan lands or Novotainia, which he wasn't really all that familiar with. There was much talk about it, which would prove interesting to the most erudite of scholars who were particularly interested about the matter, but for him...it was just burnt and weathered ruins, really, not even of interest to the driest of archaelogists, or even paleontologists.

What interested him was its location, its beautiful anchorage of a bay, its terrain, and its size. It was everything a new land should be, and more. Unlike the present ancient world of sand, radioactive glass stones, petroleum and rock, where the Free and Associative Kingdom was, this land signified its future, and its promise. All 694,368 square kilometers of it, and mayhaps more.

He'd set aside 1,368 of that for a new city worthy of such glory, a settlement for all the ages, right where his feet got wet. He already had a name for it.

Petropolis.

The next day started early for many of the people, disembarkations of several scientific and surveying parties at dawn, which necessitated earlier mealtimes.

Some of those who sortied barely slept, having remained awake in excitement or with discussions with their counterparts. There was general agreement that what they were doing was historic would greatly benefit the Free and Associative Kingdom, and images were captured for the history books and for personal bragging rights, which were soon feasted upon by media in Vey, Portus Felix, and elsewhere in the homeland.

Near the flagstaff, a temporary shelter was being built out of plywood, mainly to serve as shade from the sun. Permanent structures would be built before long, but that required legislation and regulations which the Strategos of Oranje was currently disinclined to acquiesce to at present.

Scientists began testing the soil and taking samples, while others took copious pictures and videos. No doubt many were already imagining how they and their families and close friends could profit from this latest development.

Within the harbor and elsewhere offshore, the various naval vessels began taking soundings, the better to ascertain the qualities of the area, which would soon host (if all went to plan) some of the heaviest maritime traffic in Constancian, if not regional, history.
