Queen Noor on the Mount

A loose confederation of mainland harbours in the Benacian Arctic, onto which the Raikothin retreat in the winter months when the northern ice-shelves become too inimical to the survival of even their hardy race.

Queen Noor on the Mount

St. Harald's Mount

Looking at His Lady Wife Mortal, the King beamed with pride and joy.

In spite of Her very busy schedule, which is filled to the max with innumerable travels and nigh terrifying loads of government business from the kingdoms She rules in Her own right - Leng and Goldshire - Queen Noor had found the time to travel to this hardcore part of Froyalan, the Isle of St. Harald’s Mount in the Bailiwick of Avaldsnes. She is there to perform the grand opening of the renovated Mount Royal Castle, a picturesque castle which is situated on top of the mount which gives the island its name.

Mount Royal Castle is since the Ducal Reign of Harald of Froyalan in the possession of the Elwynnese branch of the House of Ettlingar Freyu. Nowadays it serves as a retreat for the Royal Family of Flower of the North, and the aforesaid royals have spent many happy holidays and pleasurable short breaks there.

Her Riverine Majesty the Queen Consort Mortal of Elwynn is accompanied by Her five sons. The boys love the area, which is truly a paradise for children to play and learn about nature. To their delight they are allowed to visit it regularly, often with their aunt Princess Fjǫrleif, their uncle Prince Audun Joel, or their Lord Grandfather Kaiser Hjalmar of Shireroth. There are also several other relatives of King Noah present on the island such as Princess Geirbjörg of Elwynn, High Queen Mother Gudrid of Stormark, Queen Æsileif of Ravaria, Queen-Dowager Ærinndís of Batavia, Jarl Gudrödar of Ettlingar Freyu, and High King Harald of Stormark. The latter two are also there to seize the opportunity to pose with Kaiser Hjalmar, King Noah, and Prince Vilhjálm of Amokolia for a official - and historic - portrait of five generations of Ettlingar Freyu.

The locals - who are staunchly royalist - have turned out en masse for the quite rare opportunity to catch a live glimpse of Queen Noor who usually does not really visit these parts of Elwynn. The Queen Consort Mortal is expecting; the fruits of seemingly endless hot and steamy nights with Her adoring husband. It will be Her second child with King Noah, and Her sixth child overall. Motherhood really becomes Queen Noor and this fourth pregnancy of Hers has turned Her Riverine Majesty in even more of a regal and elegant stunner than She already was, drawing gasps of admiration and loud cheers wherever She goes.

Visiting the Froyalanish parts of Elwynn always confused Noor. Although she never felt home there – it was after all so different from the traditional parts of “old Elwynn” – there was such a deep respect for her. People bowed to her, showed her the utmost admiration and loyalty. It was a religious devotion. Noor understood why. The people here believed in a concept of Gods walking the Earth. To the people, Noah and Noor were the closest things to gods they would ever see. Noah was in their religion married, not only to Noor, but to the Lady Elwynn herself.

The respect and devotion afforded Noor in “Froyalan” scared her but she also admired it. These people were true royalists. They would jump off the cliffs into the wild sea if their king and queen so commanded. Noor was in awe.

In other parts of Elwynn, it was different. The princely republicanism as advocated by the mainstream Ayreonist and Humanist parties over the last hundred years was still ingrained in the culture in many places. In Goldshire, Noor was met with respect but also fear. The feudalist history in Goldshire had fostered a fear in the people of their overlords. In Leng, she never felt at home…

But yes. This was odd, but she respected it.

Now, at the current family gathering of her husband’s, Noor was happy that she after all had made the time to go here. With her, she had her own personal Leonid Guard. Despite everything, she always refused protection from any other force, even her husband’s. She was a Leonid above all, and the Leonid Guard would follow her. She had made a compromise with her husband lately, though, that she would, for her most immediate bodyguards, exclusively recruit them from “Froyalan” and Stormark. The religious devotion of her men would, in her husband’s hopes, protect her from the previous mishaps with her guardsmen. It seemed to work.

At the banquet later that evening, she was seated next to the Storish high king. She had met the man a few times, but never had the chance to indulge in private conversation with him. Harald was extremely old, and had many tales to tell. He had been there in the old days of the Elwynnese duchy, when it was a barony… He had worked together with her ancestors in Babkha and Arminy. Such old memories he carried! Noor was in awe.

After dinner, Harald and Noor managed to get away to a private spot in the ballroom, just by a giant window overlooking the sea.

“It’s beautiful here,” Noor said. “I’ve never realised what a beautiful area this is.”

Harald smiled with his ancient wisdom, chuckled and said, “that’s why I built my castle here!”

Noor smiled back. They talked for a bit about the auks who every spring come here to mate, about the type of bats that are endemic to the Avaldsnes region, and about the various types of seaweed that grew on the seabed between the castle and the city. At low tide, you could pick them, he had said, and then cook them. “Remember that entrée?”

“Oh yes! That’s….”

“…. Very locally produced!” Harald filled in. Noor sensed that Harald was proud and happy to have returned to his old duchy. Still to this day, in the imperial peerage of Stormark, he is Baron Froyalan. He bore the regalia of that barony with the same prestige and honour as he previously did with the Valtian-Storish at previous occasions.

“Hah!” she laughed. It was a short, but hearty laugh, but enough still for her to break water. She immediately got worried. The child was not due until in two months’ time, and she had had no contractions or so. Weren’t she supposed to get contractions?

In the midst of all, Harald immediately saw the signs, and discretely signalled for assistance. Two of Noor’s own blond, blue-eyed Leonid men came to her, Ásgeirr and Kjartan (they were brothers from Haraldsborg – to this day Noor couldn’t figure out which of them was the older), and ushered her to a private room.

“Your Majesty – the doctor will be here shortly!” Kjartan said. She thought of doctor Al-Zaraqi, and how failed that arrangement was. How lucky she was now. Her two tall-as-giants Storish guardsmen, who would protect her with their lives without a second’s hestitation, guarded her, protected her, and would be with her until the end.

Noor felt suddenly dizzy, and the world around her disappeared.

When Noor woke up from her slumber, she was in a different room. Kjartan and Ásgeirr still stood guard around her. She looked at her belly. All gone. Terror struck Noor’s heart. What if her child had died?

A doctor entered the room. “Good morning, your Majesty. I am pleased to report that your Majesty now has a daughter!” He proceeded to explain to Noor as to what had happened. A sudden drop in blood pressure had caused her to faint, and when she was examined, the medical people realised that the baby had her head upwards instead of downwards. In consultation with the King, they decided to extract the baby through surgery. It had all gone well.

By now, a nurse had brought the little child to the Queen. After five children, and one miscarriage, she finally had a daughter. Such joy, such happiness. Noor looked at her daughter with a new-found love, one that she had missed from the her previous births. All was bliss.
