Ashington - Prime Minister Falkner introduces landmark legislation to Sämling

The Prime Minister Viktor Falkner has introduced landmark legislation to construct the estate for the People's Assembly. Addressing Members of the Sämling, he said "Alrodey faces a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to become a hub for parliamentarianism and innovation" and that the government's hard work has resulted in "previously unseen levels of investments in Alrodey".

The bill introduced by the Prime Minister seeks to construct an estate to host the 444-member People's Assembly, which the Faro established as the fourth legislative chamber of Flaventia. Nathan II mandated that the Assembly's seat will be in Ashington, a decision highly applauded and endorsed by the National Party and the overwhelming majority of the public. Since the announcement was made, the government has highly increased its performance in the polls.

The only party to vocally oppose the bill so far have been the Communists, who described the plan as an "elitist, irresponsible and god damn stupid" measure that will further separate life in Ashington from life in Alrodey's rural areas. "We don't need a People's Assembly, we need a People's Revolution" communist extremist were heard saying.

Ashington - People's Assembly Estate Act passes, despite opposition from left-wing extremists

The People's Assembly Estate Bill has passed the Sämling with a majority of 36 against 12. The bill was supported by all members of the governing National Party, the FJBP, the UDM alliance as well as the 4 Rostock members. The only opposition came from the left-wing extremist Worker's Party and the Communist Party.

The bill was about the construction of an estate for the Flaventian People's Assembly, with the majority of funding coming from the Faro himself. Thousands of job opportunities, fresh investment and long-term economic prosperity were all promised by the Government, and yet Edward Weatherill and the rest of the left voted against the bill.

On its passage, announced by the Speaker earlier today, Prime Minister Viktor Falkner said "this day marks the beginning of a new year of development, investment and prosperity for Alrodey. Those voting against the bill showed where their true loyalties lie, and it is not with the ordinary people of Alrodey". A view that the Telegraph of Alrodey cannot draw more attention to.

Ashington - UDM and Liberal & Democratic Party alliance collapses

The alliance between the UDM and the Liberal & Democratic Party has officially come to an end as of today, the joint party HQ has announced. The Liberal & Democratic Party quoted "irreconcilable differences" with the UDM over recent months have mean that "the Liberal & Democratic Party has to once again offer a bold alternative to both the National Party and the Worker's Party at the local level, something which is impossible whilst part of the alliance with the UDM".

The news means that the UDM will no longer be represented in Alrodey and will as of today cease to stand candidates for election. The now-defunct alliance has confirmed that their members will continue as they are in the Sämling until its dissolution at the next election. "We will continue to issue a joint whip and expect both elected Members of the Sämling to work together on the premise of programme for government they were elected. The joint whip will terminate on the day of the Sämling's dissolution". The Liberal & Democratic Party will runfor re-election in both Westerheim and Westlandt, the alliance's seats, however they are unlikely to perform better as a result of the collapse.

Ashington - Two main parties devastated as Alrodeans elect most diverse Sämling ever

The National Party and the Worker's Party of Alrodey were dealt a devastating blow by Alrodeans up and down the country in this year's general election. Both parties made losses to up-to-now smaller Liberal & Democratic Party Alliance and Free Juice and Bagels Party. The election resulted in the most politically diverse Sämling in Alrodey's entire history of almost 50 years of parliamentary democracy.

Overall, 24 constituencies changed colour at this election - yet another record broken. The Liberal & Democratic Party Alliance emerged as the largest party, winning 14 seats. The Worker's Party managed to avoid a net loss of seats, losing to the Liberals, but managing to win some National Party seats. The FJBP became third largest party at 9, followed by 8 for the National Party - the party's worst election result ever.

Leader of the National Party and Prime Minister Viktor Falkner condemned the result, calling it "a rigged political game" by the Liberals and FJBP, who formed alliances in a number of constituencies to boost their chances of winning locally. It is unclear what will happen now, howerver there are speculations about a number of different coalitions possible.

Liberal and FJBP coalition, likelihood: very high
The first and most probable scenario is a Liberal and FJBP coalition, following the two parties' electoral alliance. Combined, they control 25 out of 50 seats. Effectively a majority due to the Speaker's seat and that of the 4 Rostock independents.

Worker's Party and FJBP coalition, likelihood: moderate
Should the FJBP and Liberal & Democratic Alliance negotiations fail, the Telegraph believes the Worker's Party will have a chance to install Edward Weatherill as Prime Minister of a minority coalition government with the FJBP. The coalition will have a total of 21 seats, possibly relying on one more vote from the Communist Party. The hard-left of the FJBP is said to favour this arrangement, than the majority coalition with the centrist and more moderate Liberals.

Grand Coalition of the National Party, Worker's Party of Alrodey and the Nationalist & Humanist Party, likelihood: low
As this election showed, the unexpected happens. Faced with the prospect of the first Liberal government in Alrodey, could the main parties form a Grand Coalition, also supported by the Nationalists' first member of the Sämling? Holding a combined total of 18 seats, this seems unlikely however despite losing 19 seats at the election, the National Party has the advantage of controlling the Prime Ministership. Can they use it to continue to yield power across Alrodey? Follow The Telegraph to find out!

Ashington - Alrodey's first Liberal-led government formed, after talks with FJBP

The leader of the Liberal & Democratic Party Alliance, Daved Cleg, is to become Prime Minister after the successful coalition talks between his party and the Free Juice and Bagels Party. The two to-be coalition partners saw massive electoral gains following the 1672 general election, winning 14 and 9 seats respectively.

The coalition agreement document, published in The Telegraph, features one key campaign promise of both parties: a referendum on the electoral system. Having a de-facto majority in the Sämling, the coalition appears to be preparing to ask the people of Alrodey to take part in one more major vote this year.

On announcing the agreement, Daved Cleg said "the people of Alrodey have delivered the most diverse Sämling in history. The Liberal-led coalition will now aim to unite Alrodey in our diversity, and create a better government for all of us".

The outgoing Prime Minister Viktor Falkner has renounced on his previous statements and said he will not "stand in the way of a new government. But the National Party will do everything, in parliament and on the streets, to protect Alrodey from what can be the most devastating 3 years in its history".

Ashington - The Electoral Reform Referendum: what did people tell us?

Exclusively for The Telegraph viewers, we conducted a poll of 1,100 Alrodeans up and down the island to tell us what they think of electoral reform. Now we will tell you the results of our study.

But before jumping to the nitty gritty numbers, in case you haven't followed: following the election of the first Liberal-led government, Prime Minister Deved Cleg promised a referendum on electoral reform. As we speak, Members of the Sämling are depating Electoral System Referendum Bill, which will outline the process for holding the referendum. Expectations are that the bill will make swift passage and arrive at the Lord Lieutenant's desk within days.

As things stand, voters across Alrodey will have the chance to choose one of five options: First Past the Post (FPTP) (current system), Single Non-Transferable Vote (SNTV), Mixed-Member Proportional Representation (MMP), Single Transferable Vote (STV), and last but not least the Party-List Proportional Representation (PLP). So what will voters choose?

Image

And here is how support for the different options differs across party lines:

Image

If those weren't options, but parties - how would Alrodey vote by constituency?

Image

Key takeaways:
  1. It's a battle between Liberals and Nationalists above all else. As the map shows, Liberal constituencies are most likely to vote for proportional representation, whilst Nationalist strongholds opt out for the status quo.
  2. The Worker's Party's constituencies are split, as is the party itself. Unfortunately for their leader Edward Weatherill, his party's constituencies have gone for either of the two extremes, which makes maintaining party unity difficult for him.
  3. Given the lack of a clear winner, it may well be the Worker's Party and the minority parties that deliver the ultimate victory to either Liberal-favoured PLP, or the Nationalist=-supported FPTP, once the other options are eliminated. Can Edward Weatherill once again hold the keys to power, albeit in a different position?

Ashington - Parties announce official referendum positions

The referendum act has now cleared in the Sämling, despite opposition from the National Party and the Worker's Party of Alrodey. Alrodey will now face another major vote that will share politics on the island for generations to come. What option would each of the 5 main parties take?

National Party: First Past The Post for Strong and Stable Government
The National Party has officially backed the FPTP option at the referendum. Leader Viktor Falkner has said he and his party will oppose electoral reform at whatever cost, with every fibre of strength they have got.

Worker's Party of Alrodey: "FPTP least bad option" claims former Prime Minister Edward Weatherill
The Worker's Party position has come as a surprise to many, after the Telegraph showed the most popular option among the party's voting base to be the mixed-member proportional representation system. However, in an announcement earlier today the party's leader Edward Weatherill described the referendum as "divisive, unwanted and wrong thing to do". Having been faced with the decision, he went on to say, the party would campaign for maintaining FPTP as the lead bad option.

Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance: Proportional Representation
According to expectations, the Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance in government has supported proportional representation as the "only option for fair representation in which every vote counts".

Free Juice and Bagels Party: Any proportional system
The FJBP have said they will not endorse a specific system, however they will campaign for any proportional system that ensures fair representation. Currently, this is understood to be either MMP or PR. The announcement was somewhat unexpected as the party has largely been seen as a proponent for proportional representation, and a majority of its members have expressed support for PR.

Communist Party: MMP
The Communist Party has announced it will campaign for the MMP system.

Nationalist & Humanist Party: STV
The Nationalist & Humanist Party will advocate for STV, which is seen as an upgraded form of FPTP allowing voters a slightly increased choice during election time.

Ashington - Liberal government DEFEAT in referendum

The referendum results have just been confirmed, sending a message of DEFEAT to the Liberal-led government. Despite initial expectations, the FPTP campaign has outperformed those advocating for PR in the first ballot. A third of all votes were cast in favour of FPTP, whilst the proportional list proposal got 29%. MMP, which was favoured by a lot of communist and socialist voters, came third with 20% of the vote. The last two options, SNTV and STV, received 10% and 8% of the votes respectively and are as of now eliminated.

The National Party leader Viktor Falkner said the result was a "national humiliation" for the government, claiming "the people are protesting against their destructive and twisted priorities".

As things stand, it is expected that the 10% of voters supporting SNTV will now switch to FPTP. This would put the status quo campaign at about 43%. The main alternative - proportional representation - will receive about 37% if all those who supported STV back PR. This means that despite eliminating two of the five options, the second ballot is largely expected to fail to deliver a conclusive majority. In this event, the system receiving the smallest number of votes will be eliminated. It is understood that talks between the Worker's Party, officially backing FPTP, and the Communist Party, favouring MMP, are underway. A source for The Telegraph has said that Edward Weatherill, leader of the WP, is ready to offer an electoral pact with the Communist should they back FPTP over PR in the third round.

Ashington - The Second Ballot: Another Liberal setback

Results from the second ballot of the electoral system referendum have just been confirmed. The verdict? Another setback for the Liberals, whose favoured PLP option received only 33% of the votes, compared to 41% for the FPTP.

Three constituencies changed from a plurality PLP to a plurality FPTP support, following the elimination of STV and SNTV in the first ballot. Both governing parties are hugely in favour of PLP, as 90% of Liberal voters and 74% of FJBP voters supported proportional representation. Despite this, however, the proportional representation vote increased by only 4% in the second ballot, outranked by both MMP (+6%) and FPTP, which is up by 8%.

However, Prime Minister Daved Cleg is not the only one with reasons to be disappointed at the result. The leader of the Worker's Party, Edward Weatherill, had urged his supporters to endorse FPTP , yet a majority of them voted for MMP. In fact, support for FPTP among socialists was a mere 15%, behind both MMP and PLP.

Some say, of course, that following the elimination of the MMP, those votes will in large numbers switch to the PLP option, as both systems are proportional. However, we in the Telegraph think they ought to be more careful: after all, MMP is based upon electing local representatives, which is the main asset of FPTP. At the end of the day, voters will decide the outcome in the third round!

Ashington - The Third Ballot: Alrodeans assert FPTP in historic vote by 52% to 48%

A historic decision has been made today by voters across Alrodey. In the electoral system referendum, forced through by the radical Liberal government, the people have chosen to keep Alrodey's First Past The Post electoral system by 52.37% to 47.63%, according to the official results.

The results are a disaster for the Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance and the FJBP, who both hugely favoured proportional representation - 96% and 88% of their bases respectively voted for PLP. By contrast, FPTP was supported by over 95% of National Party voters and 81% of those supporting the Nationalist & Humanist Party.

The Prime Minister, Daved Cleg to leads the Liberal government, said he accepted the result "of every democratic vote". Moments after the results were announced, the National Party leader Viktor Falkner called on Mr. Cleg to resign.

But apart from this, the party most hurt by tonight's results is neither the FBJP nor the Liberals. Edward Weatherill's Worker's Party was divided right down the middle. Its supporters voted much like people overall, 53% for FPTP and 47% for PLP. This comes despite calls by Mr. Weatherill for his supporters to "firmly" back FPTP. It appears an electoral pact with the Communist might also be out of the question, after a majority of them are believed to have supported PLP.

But, at the end of the day, the people's verdict is clear: FPTP is here to stay.

Ashington - Falkner's National Party is here to stay, following fantastic local Sämlings election results

Many were quick to write off Viktor Falkner and his National Party following this year's general election. He, however, promised to return in full swing. Tonight, he has been vindicated!

Across Alrodey, elections for local Sämlings took place, to elect 89 members of the island's 6 local Sämlings. Here are the overall results:
Sämling - Overall Control
Ashing Sämling - Hung (National Party as largest party)
Bergen Sämling - Hung (National Party as largest party)
Fletchay Sämling - National Party
Honsting Sämling - Worker's Party of Alrodey
Seelandt Sämling - Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance
Stormholt Sämling - National Party
The National Party has swept across Alrodey, winning in key marginal seats like Ashington Turrick South, Walden At-Large, Olesten West, Gilead West, Suidlandt At-Large and others. Overall, Viktor Falkner's party has won 38 seats, followed by 20 for the Worker's Party and 20 for the Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance. "When this results are repeated at the general election, the National Party will take again its rightful place as Alrodey's natural party of government" said Mr. Falkner.

By contrast, it has been yet another disappointing night for the Worker's Party, who has lost a lot of ground to both the National Party and the Liberals. Sealandt, for example, should be an easy victory for Edward Weatherill's party. Yet, it was won by the Liberals. Honsting, another socialist stronghold, was almost won by the National Party too. The former Prime Minister Weatherill has refused to comment on the results.

The election cycle for electing Alrodey's six Premiers, one for each elected local Sämling, is expected within a week. Our eyes are on Ashing and Bergen, as the only two local Sämling without overall control. The National Party has the greatest number of seats in both chambers.

Ashington - Lord Lieutenant signs Klaasiyan Royal Decree to make the demesne a democratic republic

Many up and down this island may not know, but Alrodey's Lord Lieutenant, Gwyn Moonoak, is a half-brother of the Klaasiyan Tsar, Llyr Angus-Moonaok, and serves in his Royal Regency Council. The Tsar has long expressed positive attitudes toward democratic systems of government and event visited Alrodey in 1668 to meet then Prime Minister Viktor Falkner and give a speech to the Sämling. Recently, he spoke of the need for change, pledging to create a republic out of Klaasiya.

Today, Gwyn Moonoak co-signed what is called The Last Royal Decree, establishing the way forward for Klaasiya to become a democratic society with three autonomous states. The next step would be for the Emperor to signify his approval of the Tapferite demesne's new system of government, which he has previously signalled support for. The moment the Emperor approves, Llyr will cease to be Tsar, losing all his royal titles and prerogative within Klaasiya. Instead, he will become the first President of the Confederate States, an idea which gathered a lot of support during the drafting of the new constitution.

Despite being staunchly politically impartial at home, our Lord Lieutenant has just helped pave the way for the spreading of democracy across new parts of the Empire, and for that Alrodeans should be grateful to him.

Ashington - Prime Minister Daved Clegg considers electoral pact with coalition partners FJBP

A leaked memo produced for the Prime Minister shows evidence that Daved Clegg is considering entering into an electoral pact with his coalition partners from the Free Juice and Bagels Party. The memo, seen by the Telegraph, discusses ideas to "prevent splitting the liberal vote" in the next Sämling election, which is due in just over a year. "There will be significant benefits for both partners from close cooperation, so long as the two retain their identity" the memo reads.

We at the Telegraph contacted the Prime Ministerial office for comment, but this was refused. Leader of the Opposition Viktor Falkner, who leads the National Party, said this demonstrates "fear in the eyes of the elitist that the People will vote them out at the earliest available opportunity". Asked if he would challenge the legitimacy of an electoral pact, he replied "without the slightest doubt".

Alrodey's First Past The Post electoral system means that the candidate with most votes in a single constituency wins. Thus, smaller parties have traditionally suffered as a result.

Ashington - Prime Minister Daved Clegg resigns following electoral defeat. Viktor Falkner makes a triumphant return to power

The Prime Minister Daved Clegg has tendered his resignation to the Lord Lieutenant following a huge electoral defeat. The Liberal and Democratic Party Alliance, which led the coalition government alongside the FJBP, lost 10 seats. The coalition overall were reduced to 8 seats, evenly split, from 25 prior to the election.

Victorious was the leader of the National Party, former and future Prime Minister Viktor Falkner. Triumphant following the result, he praised the return of his party to power and promised to "overhaul the liberal agenda" that ruled Alrodey so far.

The final results confirmed by the Lord Lieutenant gave 21 seats to the National Party, 15 to the Worker's Party (up 3), 4 for the FJBP and LDPA each, and 1 to the Communist Party. Although not commanding an overall majority of seats, the National Party is to form a government due to the unfeasibility of a grand coalition involving the other parties.

Ashington - Data breach renders Alrodey's official symbols unreadable as Prime Minister calls for calmness

An unprecedented data breach has occurred in the past few days in which the government's servers have suffered extremely serious damage. The original and full versions of the official flag and Coat of Arms of Alrodey have been stored on the hacked government's servers. The result of the attack has rendered large sections of the database unreadable and has caused major concern across government and the Sämling.

For the Telegraph, Prime Minister Viktor Falkner urged for calmness, saying that "the best government engineers and specialists are working day and night to recover from this outrageous attack on our dear Alrodey". Opposition leaders and former prime ministers Edward Weatherill and Daved Clegg have called this a "constitutional outrage" and urged the PM to "report immediately to the Sämling, and seek a Sämling-approved path forward". They said recovering the lost information is "not a choice, but an absolute must for the Prime Minister".

According to the Telegraph's political editor, the consequences of the breach will be truly "groundbreaking and rule-changing" when it comes to the next election. "The next few days will truly make history. If Viktor Falkner managers to restore the data, he will likely win re-election with a landslide majority. Should he be unsuccessful in getting Alrodey's official symbols back, the consequences for him and his National Party will most probably be electoral oblivion".

Ashington - Lost symbols crisis deepens as Sämling debates declaring a national amergecy

The crisis of the lost symbols of Alrodey, which the Telegraph reported a few days ago, has also become a political one. On one side, the National Party Government defends its position, saying they are doing "everything, possible and impossible, to recover from this heinous attack". On the other, the opposition parties have called the Government "irresponsible" and demanded that the Sämling have a greater role in guiding Alrodey forward.

Today, they moved a motion in the Sämling to declare a "national emergency". The Prime Minister is currently addressing members of the Sämling, arguing why they should not support the motion. Edward Weatherill, of the Worker's Party, and Daved Clegg, a Liberal, seem to be launching an attack on the PM, threatening with a vote of no confidence that could potentially see the PM forced out of office.

Ashington - Emergency motion fails 24-25, as Rostock independents side with government. Opposition threathens no-confidence

The government has survived a motion to announce a national emergency in relation to the data breach, following a 24-25 vote in the Samling earlier today. It was called jointly by Worker's Party Leader Edward Weatherill and LDPA leader Daved Clegg in order to empower Members of the to dictate how Alrodey recovers from the crisis.

Currently, the National Party serves as a minority government with 21 seats. The opposition has a total of 24, and there are the 4 independents from Rostock. A parliamentary convention says that the Rostock independents would not normally cast the deciding vote on crucial matters, however today they helped the government to defeat the opposition's motion. Edward Weatherill called this "unprecedented" and threatened to call a no-confidence vote in the government. Despite the Worker's Part's leader criticism, independents have previously sided to deliver majorities too. For example, during his tenure as Prime Minister, Edward Weatherill received 2 votes from them to carry his Trade Unions Act 1660 over the line.

The Prime Minister's office has announced they are "pleased" with the result, but "continue to focus all of the government's energy to resolve the issue".

Ashington - Sämling passes act to allow election delays as crisis deepens

The Sämling has today agreed to the Prime Minister's proposed Extending the life of the Sämling (Rules) Act 1677. In a 30-15 vote, members approved legal measures that could delay the next election. Under the terms of the law, should an emergency be declared (and a few people can do that), an election may be delayed for up to "two standard terms of the Sämling".

Currently, the next election is expected at the beginning of next year (1678), however under the provisions of the newly passed bill this could be delayed to 1684.

Opposed to the measure was the Worker's Party. It's leader and former Prime Minister criticised the bill, describing it as a "dangerous loophole that could, under the right circumstances, practically suspend democracy in Alrodey. Can anyone imagine that a Sämling elected in 1675 will still be around making laws and deciding people's lives in 1684? That is a democratic outrage".

Ashington - Pro-independence nationalists issue ultimatum to Prime Minister Falkner

A strong pro-independence movement within the National Party has gained significant support since the national crisis began a year ago, according to sources inside the party. No representative from that faction has yet came forward publicly in the media, however according to the Telegraph's sources they may have as many as 7-8 MSPs, a third of the party's members in the Sämling.

The Prime Minster's office has refused to comment on "speculations from the press". If true, however, this may cause significant trouble for politicians across the spectrum. As an island nation, Alrodeans are almost by definition prone to separatist movements, which may be "devastating" in the words of Edward Weatherill.
