Right in the Great Southern Desert, Clurke is one of those small country towns that exists for one thing only - mining. In this case, they tap into the natural gas chambers around the town, as well as managing mines further east into the big tin areas. The town is also extremely hot during the day, with the result that most of the citizens live below ground, in houses built in old tunnels, where it is cooler. This makes them hard to spot from aerial planes, leading them to be declared one of the safest towns in all Novatainia.

The functional housing of this town continues to amuse and amaze visitors. Not only are the actual houses below ground but whole streets are located in underground tunnels, with regular skylights allowing enough sunlight through to keep the area visible, but prevent it heating it.
